Mrs. Holder's Yellowbird Cottage is a charming West Indian style cottage located in a vibrant local neighborhood. Chickens, dogs, and the occasional goat roam throughout our sleepy neighborhood, and children playing ball in the street are a common sight. Nestled amongst a half acre garden, you can lounge on the large wrap around porch and look out at bougainvilleas, periwinkle flowers, and neem trees framing a beautiful view of the Atlantic Ocean. Trimmed in blue, our small one bedroom, one bath cottage is reminiscent of the traditional open and airy Caribbean homes, albeit with modern amenities. The cottage is decorated with local art, includes a full kitchen, a bath with a shower, and a king size bed (or two full size beds). The property is secluded and perfect for a single person or a couple who want to get away from the modern world, as there is no phone, TV, or internet (don't worry though- there is internet, TV, and phone access right down the road at the Yacht Harbor). So besides a weekly house cleaner who will come by to wash your sheets and towels and take out your trash this is a great place to get away from it all!
Virgin Gorda is a perfect place for the eco-tourist with scenic beaches, beautiful reefs, a national park full of local flora and fauna. Our property is a wonderful example of how a tourist destination can be self-sustaining and have a positive impact on the surrounding area.
Because all of the water on our property is supplied by the yearly rains, so we ask that no more than two adults stay at one time to help us conserve water.
The cottage is located in a local neighborhood in The Valley on the Atlantic side of Virgin Gorda. It is situated on top of a hill that overlooks Handsome Bay and has a great view of the ocean. Swimming in Handsome Bay is not recommended, but there are plenty of beaches nearby that you can get to on foot or by taxi. Right over the hill to the north is Savannah Bay, a stunning white sand beach with a large coral reef that is close to shore and easily accessible for snorkeling. Down the road is Spanish Town and the Yacht Harbor, where there is a grocery store, deli, snorkel and scuba shop, art gallery, and a few bars and restaurants. You can also rent a car or get a taxi and go to the south side of the island to visit Spring Bay, Devil's Bay, and the famous Baths. To get to the North Sound we recommend you rent a car and spend the day touring the beaches and restaurants.
If you are an independent traveler who is enticed by the flavor of staying in a local neighborhood; excited about the prospect of meeting locals; ok with getting lost and asking for directions; and want the seclusion our property brings then the Yellowbird cottage is exactly what you are looking for! Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions, as we would love to talk to you via email or over the phone!
A note about getting to Virgin Gorda: One of the most spectacular aspects of staying on Virgin Gorda is that it offers visitors a secluded vacation on an island with a small and vibrant community. The most daunting obstacle for people traveling to the BVI for the first time can be getting to Virgin Gorda, but it is not as hard as it might seem at first. There are multiple islands you can fly into (Puerto Rico, Tortola, St Thomas) that all offer charter planes and ferries to VG. Before you book your flights, contact us and we will give you a list of recommended companies to use, all based off 30 years of traveling to and from the island. We want your vacation to be as enjoyable as possible, and that includes getting onto and off the island, so however we can help we will!
All of our guests also receive our 'Holder's guide to the Valley on Virgin Gorda,' which has tons of useful information on the island and recommendations on local beaches, restaurants, bars, stores, and services.
My mother and father, Martha and Gene Holder, began renting out the Yellowbird Cottage over 30 years ago, relying mostly on return guests and word of mouth. In 1978, after my sister and I left the nest, our parents bought the plot next door to where the cottage is now and moved to the island full time. Before they moved to Virgin Gorda they had run a small, private primary school in Colorado. Upon moving to the island their plan was to retire, but, instead they were approached by a philanthropist who wanted them to start a one room school for local children called the Valley Day School, which is still running to this day. At that point Virgin Gorda had no paved roads, grocery stores, or schools and over their three decades on Virgin Gorda they watched the island grow into a vibrant, thriving community with a strong local culture.
Sadly, in 2015 my mother passed away and left this wonderful cottage for the family. Now I manage the rentals with my daughter, Kyra. We also have the help of a family friend, Seraphin, who takes care of the property and is there for our guests during their stay.
Matt Goodhart purchased this cottage in 1986
My parents fell in love with Handsome Bay and the surrounding community the moment they arrived in Virgin Gorda. The neighborhood was perfect for them because it was close to their school and in a local neighborhood. They built the main, two story house across the street first and that is where my mother lived until 2014. When they later built the cottage they decided to build something similar to the local houses, an open airy cottage with a large garden and a good view. You can still see a few of these houses around the island, but most of them have been replaced by larger more modern homes.
The cottage gives visitors a unique opportunity to experience Virgin Gorda like a local. In Virgin Gorda we take care of each other and that is something you can feel the moment you walk out of the house and get a 'hello' from a passing neighbor or a honk of the horn from a friend. The cottage is a special place, a place where our family has had return guests for over 20 years, a place where people feel at home and want to come back time and again.
We truly enjoyed every part of the island, from its different bays, restaurants, and scuba diving locations. Martha you are a wonderful host, making this vacation the best ever!! We will be back!
Had a great visit to the Yellowbird Cottage. Was there for a week exploring the island, which was also amazing. Cottage was clean and comfortable. For those who need luxury, this may not be the best choice, but for the person or couple looking for affordable and comfortable accommodations on an otherwise very expensive island, this is great! The chickens started at about 330am every morning, so definitely bring your earplugs. Also, when we visited there was very little in the way of basic supplies at the house (when I have visited other rentals, there has frequently been a bit of olive oil, salt/pepper, coffee filters, etc) so you may find it most economical to bring some of those with you. The little library was great, especially the old but still good local guidebooks and flora and fauna books. All in all, this was a great little spot on a great little island! Also the owner gave some very nice recommendations after booking that were very helpful. Also, they have 2 nice beach chairs and 2 somewhat anemic beach towels. I was worried about not having enough towels but in the end I didn't even use those 2 they had..... you just dry off and keep going in the nice warm sun. Although we only saw 1 or 2 mosquitoes, there was also a mosquito net for over the bed and all the windows and doors were screened. Definitely would rent again!!! Finally, Seraphin, the local caretaker was very sweet and accommodating!
We are very happy with out stay in this great cottage:
It is "strategically" located - 5 min or less from all the best beaches on Virgin Gorda(including the baths), the marina, the stores, the telecoms, etc.
It is in the middle of a big, nice, fenced, private garden away from neighbors.
It has fully equipped kitchen (more dishes and utensils that you will ever need unless you are top chef:-).
It looks great and is charming and welcoming.
It has very nice deck with a view and lounge furniture.
The owners provide a lot of extras: like beach chairs, a library of books and much more.
The owners and the staff are very responsive and helpful.
Mrs. Martha Holder and her property manager Seraphin were such great hosts! The cottage was even better than describe online. The island lost power two nights in a row and Seraphin texted us to make sure we were all set and needed anything. When I return to Virgin Gorda, I look forward to staying at the Yellowbird Cottage again.
Words cannot describe what a wonderful time we had at the cottage! We visited in February of 2016 for a week (wish it was longer). We have vacationed all over the Caribbean looking for the 'perfect' Island and I think we found it in Virgin Gorda!..The house was so comfortable and perfect for us. Comfy bed, spotlessly clean house and lots of interesting books if you forgot to bring one! Sweet little kitchen to start the day off for the beach!..So many wonderful, mostly empty beautiful beaches. Never a parking problem, folks waving at you when you drive down the road. Everyone we came into contact with was kind, helpful and approachable (not like a lot of Islands we have been to). This makes a big difference. Then home after a long beautiful day at the beach relaxing in comfy chairs with the porch doors wide open. You could see the moonlight over the ocean and hear the waves!. We spent many hours just lounging on the porch or reading. NO BUGS. We didn't find a few chicken and dog sounds (as others have mentioned) to be any bother at all. We are used to this when in the Caribbean. The location is PERFECT!...minutes from the beach, the grocery store, the little town..etc. I cannot say enough about how perfect this house was for us! We talked to many folks and when they quoted what they were paying..for the same beaches I might add..I felt very, very lucky to have found this little gem. We HIGHLY recommend this rental to anyone considering!

The cottage is the best solution on the island!
It has all what you need for your stay and its location is perfect
Kyra is really helpful and she gives all the suggestions you may need before the arrival. Seraphin is always at disposal during your stay..So you have only to enjoy the sea, the sun and the nature of Virgin Gorda!
This was such a nice little cottage... clean, wonderful view, beautifully landscaped yard, which we thought was very large and private for a local neighborhood. The wraparound porch was using every morning and evening.
Seraphin is such a wonderful man... the Holder's are fortunate to have such a great on-site manager. He stopped by several times during our stay, to make sure that everything was going well for us and if there was anything we needed. We enjoyed his visits and hearing about "real day to day life" on Virgin Gorda.
Our favorite beach on Virgin Gorda is Savannah Bay, so the location was ideal for us, being only a 5 minute drive there. The Baths area is also very close. Hike over to Trunk Bay from Spring Bay to get away from the crowds.
Just a comment about those who mention the noisy chickens and dogs... we really only heard dogs barking in the evenings, not during the night, and where can you go in the Virgin Islands and NOT be wakened by roosters crowing? I know there are locations that might be a bit quieter, but you have to expect that your going to hear them just about anywhere.
A couple of suggestions for the owners that would improve the stay... 3 items that we really like to have available that were lacking were, a decent cooler, beach chairs, and a grill. There was a styrofoam cooler, but it was not very sturdy and you could not take it onto a beach. We left it in the back of the car and went to retrieve food and beverage when needed.
We would not hesitate to recommend Yellowbird. It is not a Holiday Inn, it is not a "villa", it's a comfortable and clean cottage, and we were very comfortable staying the week.
