About Mark and Sarah
We fell in love with Costa Rica and, specifically, the Ballena coast, when we came here to marry in 2013. We had a spectacular view of the Whale's Tail as our backdrop! When we first came to Casa Cola Ballena ourselves we were awestruck, and set on a path to call it our new home! We look forward to sharing our home with you so that you can experience the ultimate in Costa Rica living.
Mark and Sarah purchased this House in 2015
Why Mark and Sarah chose Uvita
For those of you who have stayed at Casa Cola Ballena in the past, you'll be delighted with the upgrades we have brought to our new home! The home itself, the nature that surrounds, and the incredible views remain awesome! We have upgraded all the bed linens to a Tommy Bahama-esq look, and upgraded the "creature comforts" such as Netflix streaming and internet connectivity in the event you need to stay better connected with your home base while escaping in the jungle!
What makes this House unique
Luxury Jungle Living....This house provides a great way to be in an adventurous area with all the fun things to do in the rainforest and at the beach. After a long hard day of surfing, ziplining, ATV's, fishing, or horses, there is nothing better than getting up to the house, where it is a little cooler, jumping in the pool, and living in luxury in the Jungle. It's like getting away from it all, but still coming home to a well appointed home with all the modern amenities.

Stunning property, great hospitality!
The house, the views and the property are all amazing! The wildlife adds a special sense of vitality to the place too! Mark and Sarah were great hosts, going out of their way to make us feel at home and to help us book wonderful adventures! We absolutely loved Costa Rica, we can't wait to go back!
We loved having the opportunity to share our home and our area with you! Glad you had such an incredible time! Hurry back!
A lot of people rent out nice houses but...
Service, reliability and honesty about the quality of the product are so important. WE rent based on a few words and pictures in good faith. I have never had my expectations so exceeded. Prompt replies to any question, help choosing and setting up activites- all incredible, a kid friendly home chef, Willie, - for those long days, a jaw dropping view, beach equipment and pool toys. Yes the almost 2 mile drive is bumpy and does need 4 wheel drive, but it is so worth it. It's a little cooler, above the bug line and the sea and sky shimmer and the jungle is alive. It was a perfect vacation, thanks to Sarah and Trina. No need to overthink this one, it's all it says it is and more.
This house was amazing in every regard. Sarah was more than helpful in our planning and was so gracious; she really has thought of everything her guests could need. The drive to the house is very steep (take Sarah's advice and let her help you book a rental SUV) but the view makes it all worth it. It is a little cooler on the mountain which is a nice break from the heat at lower elevations. The pool was nice and the outdoor shower was the best, we would love to stay there again!
We (a family of five with a 2, 4 and 6 year old plus two grandparents) stayed at Casa Cola Ballena at the end of March and had an incredible time! The home is in excellent condition, the grounds are very well cared for and the view of the ocean and whale tail beach is a show stopper!
There is a diversity of wildlife around the house. From the house and yard we saw toucans everyday, a pizote (coati), many different species of birds, and while we didn’t actually see them, we heard howler monkeys numerous times, including some that were quite close.
I believe one other review mentioned the abundance of wildlife and also commented that while it was great to have so much wildlife nearby, this home does a great job of keeping the wildlife outside. We completely agree with that review; there was a tremendous amount of wildlife, but it stayed outside, which is not always the case with rentals in Costa Rica.
Overall, the home is very comfortable and well cared for and we highly recommend it for a stay in the Uvita area!
Finally, I wanted to mention two great day excursions that we did during our stay. The first was an atv tour that the homeowners recommended. They have both solo rider atv’s as well as larger ones with up to five seats, which is what our family used. You go up a mountain, stop at a small coffee plantation and at the end swim in a natural freshwater pond beneath a small waterfall. Our entire family had a great time on this trip. The second day excursion that I wanted to mention was a mangrove / river boat tour in the town of Siempre, which is about a 75 minute drive south of Uvita. We went on a smallish boat with a sun shade that was driven by a guide and saw a ton of wildlife including a caiman (like a small crocodile), scarlet macaw parrots, squirrel monkeys, capuchin monkeys including a baby (playing on branches right above the water maybe ten feet away from us), a boa constrictor in a tree, a sleeping owl, many other birds including ibis’, petrels, egrets, herons, and turkey vultures, among others. This was a great excursion and fun for the whole family.
Costa Rica was a great trip and Casa Cola Ballena was an awesome house to stay in!
This was our home away from home for our first family trip (2 adults, 4 kids - 16, 13, 11, 9), and we could not have asked for better.
Communication was excellent before our trip. Sarah helped us pull together a great package of excursions and services in preparation for our time in Costa Rica. It was clear that Sarah was committed to getting us set up for a successful trip. Communication and responsiveness was equally excellent while we were there. Both Sarah (owner) and Trina (property manager) helped us a great deal with any questions or issues we had.
The property was a true paradise - beautiful gardens, lovely swimming pool, amazing view, and a full supply of everything you might need to make your stay feel like home - linens, kitchen tools, appliances, barbecue, board games, puzzles, etc. It also had a great stereo system to enjoy your music throughout the house and on the patio while going about your day. The gardeners and pool maintenance folks do a wonderful job keeping everything beautiful, and they were warm and respectful each time they needed to access the property to go about their important work.
The beds were incredibly comfortable, and we all slept very well while there. The a/c units in each room helped with the more humid nights. We have three daughters (16, 13 and 9) who shared the bunk beds throughout our time. This worked very well for our girls.
At Sarah’s recommendation, we hired William to make some of our dinners while we were there. This was an excellent decision. The food was scrumptious; it was a great relief not to cook some of the meals; and William and his wife, Alissia (sp?), treated our family like royalty. These dinners were one of our favourite parts of the trip.
I highly recommend this property. It was a key to our family’s dream vacation come true.
Immaculate property - 5 Star!
This property is very well maintained with stunning views and provides all you could ever need during a visit to Costa Rica. Our family of 7 stayed very comfortably for 10 days in this home. The kitchen is spacious and has all you need to prepare meals. We cooked some meals at home, but found that we really enjoyed the local restaurants (La Parcella, Por Que No, Pizza Time) and ate out most nights.
We saw toucans on occasion in the tree above the pool, some giant frogs, a pizotte, and some interesting insects on the property.
Sarah and Mark were awesome hosts. We always received very quick responses to any questions we had. We arrived quite late at night and Sarah happily checked us in. We even had the opportunity to share a nice dinner together and visit to nearby resort with them.
The road to get there is a bit tricky, but we enjoyed the ride up!
Thank you Mark and Sarah for an unforgettable experience in your beautiful home!

The Costa Ballena, of Whale's Coast, is one of the coolest spots in Costa Rica. Where Pura Vida is still alive and well, and a wonderful community. In addition to boat tours to see whales and dolphins, we have inshore and deep sea fishing, ATV tours, Ultralight Tours, Waterfalls and Waterfall repelling, Ziplines, Rappelling through Waterfalls, Horseback Riding on the beach or in the mountains, and much more! We also have THE BEST National Geographic certified guide in our pocket provide the best tours of Corcovado (he can find the animals no one else seems to find!) or take you scubaing or snorkeling offshore Caño Island.
There is a wide array of fun tour activities and beaches all within a 20-minute drive. There is an amazing waterfall with a bar and restaurant just 5 minutes down the road. We have all kinds of beaches, from beginner to expert surf beaches, cave beaches, and kid-friendly beaches all within a short drive.
If you don’t have it, download the WAZE app for directions while you are in town – much better and more reliable than Google Maps. There is a new "super highway" that runs from San Jose south to Jaco, at which point you'll be driving the coastline to Uvita. It's an easy road. Sometimes some construction, but an easy road.
