Receive recommendations for locally owned restaurants. Enjoy the art collection of local artist Michael Houser. (There will be a new exhibit each time you stay with us.)
Although we both have lived in other parts of the world for extended periods, we have deep roots in Springfield. We recently left for Massachusetts to be close to children and grandchildren. We hope others will enjoy being at Purple Awning House as much as we do.
Bernie Carver purchased this house in 1988
Sally purchased the house as a single mom thinking that it would be a good place to raise her two children. Her strategy worked because they both became wonderful, successful adults. We have our many fond memories of our old house and love the neighborhood.
Purple Awning House combines the advantages of being in a city and open space. Lincoln Park is a wonderful place to enjoy the outdoors, yet you can get grocery stores and restaurants with a short walk.
Thank you both for sharing your home with us. We had a wonderful stay, and most definitely would want to stay there again when we return to Springfield. The Lincoln museum was spectacular and I need to return to catch all of what I did not have time to see. Doug was great at getting us in and seeing us off. I think our dog will miss the place most of all. She was spoiled by numerous walks at the beautiful park across the street. All in all, we had a great time, just too short. hopefully a longer stay next time. Thank You again for your hospitality!!
The property exceeded my expectations. It was very clean, I loved the old deep bathtub and the large closets. While the stove and oven were old they worked very well. I liked the arched doorways and the doorbell chimes. The yard space and shady trees were perfect! I hope to stay here again.
Great place with all of the amenities!!! Extremely clean with very hospitable hosts. Very close to all of the major Abraham Lincoln tourists sites and Illinois State fairgrounds. We had plenty of room to accommodate 6 guests. We will definitely be renting for future visits!!!
This home is extremely nice and clean, with good amounts of space, air conditioning and an eclectic charm. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and the owners greeted us personally when we arrived. Overall a very pleasant experience. Would definitely recommend.
We had a wonderful visit in Springfield. The house is very comfortable and clean, well stocked with basic cooking utensils. We celebrated a birthday while staying and I actually was able to bake and decorate the birthday cake. The oven is very old, but I enjoyed the adventure and it turned out perfectly. It is just a few minutes from downtown and the museums so you are still close to everything that you may want to see. The park across the street is beautiful and my 3 year old son enjoyed the playground. (it is in walking distance even though it can't be seen from the house) There was no shortage of clean linens for the bed and bathroom. We did not need it for a short stay, but the washer and dryer are a nice convenience. The property manager, Doug, is a very nice gentleman and gave a quick tour and instructions then let us enjoy our stay. He is always a phone call away if you need him. There are instructions for the security system for your peace of mind, as well as wi-fi. Our visit was in the midst of a terrible heat wave so I was concerned that the description only mentioned AC in the bedrooms, but it turned out that the main living room and both bedrooms had individual AC units. The kitchen was the only room that was not cooled, but the combination of the other three units kept the entire property very comfortable. If we ever find ourselves back in Springfield I will be coming back to stay at the Purple Awning House.
We loved it, Bernie and the management team were very helpful and friendly. We were in town with friends so having a whole house was so much more fun and convenient. The house is very cute and comfortable.
Our weekend stay was great, good location and a roomy house! Kitchen was well stocked, bedrooms were large. Close to attractions and an easy drive to a local grocery store. Thanks!
Anyone who cares about American history should visit the The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum. It is a national treasure that has consistently been the most visited presidential museum since it opened in 2005. Our area has much more to offer Civil War and history buffs - Lincoln's Home, Lincoln's Tomb, New Salem State Park, two historic State Capitol buildings, just to name a few. Frank Loyd Wright's Dana Thomas House and the National Museum of Surveying are other gems that visitors should not miss. As you may surmise, visiting all these great places takes some time. Visitors should plan on spending at least two or three days to experience our town.
Purple Awning House is across the street from 88 acres of open space at Lincoln Park, one of Springfield’s oldest and most popular parks. Sports oriented facilities at the park include: trails for walking, running, or cycling, a soccer field, 2 disc golf courses, 3 tennis courts, 3 shuffleboard courts, 6 ball diamonds, and 21 horseshoe courts. The Nelson Recreation Center contains an outdoor swimming pool , 2 indoor ice rinks and Junior Blues Hockey games.
Make this “party headquarters” for your next family celebration or business meeting. Reasonably priced venues for weddings, showers or business meetings are within walking distance at Lincoln Park Pavilion or Edwards Place. The bridge at Lincoln Park Lagoon is a very popular location for outdoor weddings and wedding pictures. Benedictine University, the Brinkerhoff Home and public transportation are less than a block away from Purple Awning House.
