Overview

Menemsha Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms + Den, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4-6)

The 'wayside camp' as it was known, is an early 20C cottage, it is conveniently located on the North Road and it is an easy walk to the harbor, which has a jetty, boat dock and beach. There are two excellent fish stores where you can get clams on the half shell, lobster, or an assortment of fish right off the boat. There is a general store and restaurant just a 'block' from the house.

Menemsha is at the western end of Martha's Vineyard and provides many beautiful sunsets over the water. It is always a great way to end the day. Mornings are very peaceful and if you like to walk or run, you may have the beach to yourself.

The house is simple, but comfortable with a large eat in kitchen, living room , den, two bedrooms and bathroom. The bathroom was completely renovated two years ago. There is a large deck with a pond view and the coast guard station behind the house.

Renters have access to the town beach as well as two beautiful private beaches for 'up island residents '. Many nice roads for walking and running.

About Matthew Cooper

I am an artist and am always inspired by the beauty of the vineyard. My two brothers and I own this property. We all live in different states and have enjoyed a lot of family time in the Menemsha house. Our parents bought the house, and for several years it was an art gallery.

Matthew Cooper purchased this cottage in 1978

Why Matthew Cooper chose Martha's Vineyard

We like to fish, Kayak, paint, go to the beach , walk and enjoy bbq on the deck . I love long walks in the morning when no one is around, or kayak on Menemsha pond and see the wildlife.

What makes this cottage unique

Convenient to Menemsha beach and the two docks. Great place to fish. Very unique and scenic, Access to Menemsha pond.

A romantic getaway place.

Informal Menemsha Cottage VRBO # 302374

This delightful, quiet cottage is adjacent to the small Coast Guard station and walking to wonderful Larsen's Fish Market, terrific fried seafood at The Bite, and the best sunsets on the Vineyard! There is a nice beach of course but our favorite beach on the Vineyard is Lucy Vincent so be certain to get a pass. The cottage is a simple fishing camp that is spotlessly clean but the folks who own it have had the wisdom to keep it simple with just a few modern updates including wifi, tv and washer and fabulous deck. Enjoy being out of cellphone towers reach though a quick drive solves that if need be. The kitchen is well stocked to enjoy cooking the fresh seafood and delicious island grown veggies from Morning Glory Farms and lots of other farmer's markets too. We totally enjoyed our stay, would recommend it to laid back friends and family and would head back back there in a second. The owner was totally accessible though out the process and was clear about the low key nature of the cottage. If you like to go out to dinner there is fine dining at 2 noteworthy inns minutes away and nothing is too far on the Vineyard. PS no dishwasher but small sacrifice for a piece of paradise!

So charming!

  • 5 of 5

I absolutely adored my stay at this lovely cottage! I've been coming to the Island for years and this place is the very definition of Vineyard charm . Not fancy, but warm and cozy. We loved being able to walk to everything in Menemsha, watch the boats coming in and the sunsets.

I would go back in a heartbeat!

Stay Away!

  • 1 of 5

My wife and I rented this property for two weeks in August. The place was so disgusting and decrepit we left after one night. There were rodent droppings, bugs coming out of drains, smelly and filthy appliances, furniture, and walls. The list could go on and on. When we telephoned the owner to complain about the conditions of her rental she agreed to send us a refund. However the owner later reneged on her promise and refused to send the refund. It took months to even get our security deposit back. This was a horrible experience and I strongly recommend that you stay far away from this rental.

Owner's Response: We were saddened that these visitors didn't enjoy our family cottage. My father bought it 35 years ago in 1977 and my brother and sister and I have brought our families there every year since. It's one of the oldest properties in the town, having survived the Hurricane of 1938. We're entirely comfortable there and most visitors are. As we say in the listing it's a rustic and informal cottage, not a Hamptons-style property. We disagree with some of the characterizations here and where there were problems we've worked to address them. We'll be there with our families this summer.

Unmet expectations

Upon arrival in August 2011, my family and I found mice, wasps nests, and ants in this cottage. It is in disrepair and the owner is not to be trusted.

It's one of the oldest properties in the town, having survived the Hurricane of 1938. We're entirely comfortable there and most visitors are. As we say in the listing it's a rustic and informal cottage, not a Hamptons-style property. And as with every country home there are bound to be occasional issues that need tending to. In this case, we offered to work with the renters to take care of problems, as we always do, but rather than take us up on our offer they chose to leave early. We offered compensating time and they chose not to take it. We eventually parted ways but they're always welcome back as is anyone else. We want to make sure that our guests are happy. We don't seek to make a profit on this property and we've been given many lucrative offers to sell it. We just seek to make enough money to cover taxes and upkeep and our hope is to share our love of Menemsha and this property.

Truly Charming Menemsha Experience

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at this charming property in June and loved it. The owner's description is very accurate. The setting is perfect if you want to be able to walk out your door and be in the heart of all that Menemsha has to offer, the dock, the beach, those glorious sunsets on the beach and of course the seafood that is available right there. We had a couple of days of rain and were perfectly happy to watch movies which we picked up at the local library. We sat in the cozy living room. On the sunny days, which of course were better, we sat out back on the beautiful deck. This is a warm, clean, nicely decorated property and the owner is very interested in making sure your needs are met.

Very cute cottage, everything we needed was there. Sunsets we unbelievable! The food at the local fish market was amazing, (and you can walk to it) the location was great, you could really go without your car. We will stay here again. I loved the old school charm of this cottage.
