Guestbook comments from the manager

Christine did her company summer party at the home and everything went very smoothly. It worked out very well for them to do it at this house rather than a typical event space as we were able to accommodate the families of our employees easily. We will see you again next year!

Wonderful place, wonderful people

  • 5 of 5

Such a beautiful relaxing time. Definitely recommend. One thing to look out for, most of time i was there the allotted parking space was blocked or taken. Not the end of the world but we all know what it's like when someone is parking in your spot. Outside of that, it was great.

Owner's Response: Thank you David for being a wonderful guest and writing an honest review. Please accept my sincere apologies for the parking situation. The parking spot that is allotted to this unit is the front spot which can be blocked by the tandem car parked behind it. That is why, sometimes we parked in the allotted spot ourselves and left you the tandem spot behind it so that you don't get locked in. But we should have explained it to you little better. May be we will change the spot to the back tandem spot for the future guests. Thanks again. Ramesh

Right on the beach, but VERY aged, dirty, and out of date

  • 2 of 5

The house is right on the beach, backs to the sand, the view and location is amazing. However, the entire place is VERY outdated, needed to be upgraded decades ago. The windows are full of grim, the tracks they run on are literally blackened with grunge and grime. The walls have scratches and dents and chipped paint, the woodwork and trim needs to be sanded and restained or repainted, the cabinets were repainted a while back, but they are just VERY old and feel dirty. Everything in the house is the lowest and cheapest possible, from the pots and pans to the toaster to the ancient mattresses. There is one spatula in the house, which has a chunk taken out of it, the laundry facilities are horrid, its in an old garage that is so packed with stuff and never been cleaned, full of lint and grime with no exhaust fan so it is horribly humid, and again, the cheapest old washer and drier possible, and there is no laundry soap so you have to go buy your own, which of course you cant take back on the plane so ridiculous to buy a tub of soap for 3 loads of laundry. The only way to open and close the master bedroom is with a massive sticky door that creaks and slams so it wakes up the whole house. There are no screens on the bathroom windows (and no exhaust fans) and my daughter ended up with 2 spiders in bathroom and we had a lot of flies because there are no screens. The dishwasher was full of dirty dishes when we got there and with the state of the kitchen, we opted to just buy paper plates and plastic silverware for our stay. I know I'm a bit of a clean and neat freak, but this was worse than anywhere else I have ever stayed. I guess for the price, I expected it to be more of a resort style house and not looking like a low-income rental.

Owner's Response: Hi Adrianne: I am saddened to read about your experience although you are the first one to have had this kind of bad experience. We have had multiple guests come and stay with us and their experiences have been from 'pleasant' to 'spectacular'. Most of the guests who visit us are focused on the fact that they can walk out on to the beautiful beach and they get to enjoy the gorgeous sunsets. Most of the things that you mentioned are because of significant humidity and salt in the air on the beach that eats up the paint and wood and rusts all kind of ironwork. We have remodeled and upgraded the units only recently in the last couple of years. The screens were in fact removed at the suggestion of one of our guests as most of the visitors want an unobstructed view of the ocean. Flies or spiders have never been an issue but will definitely have housekeeping look into that. We do replace pots and pans off and on as needed and will have maintenance check into that as well. I am offended though by your comments in calling our home a 'low income rental'. we do take pride in the ownership and spend quite a bit of time their ourselves. If you do want to focus on the walls and doors, then next time please book at "Shutters" in Santa Monica next time as that is the only resort 'On the Sand' in this area and the rate for just one room (and not for two rooms and a family room and kitchen and a patio like we have) for two adults and one kid for coming Friday, August 25th (only one day, in the off season when schools are open) is $1535 on their website. You will not have any pots or pans to worry about and you will not have the option of using the laundromat, so you will not need to buy the soap. You will probably be paying ten times for your laundry compared to the cost of laundry soap and probably ten times for your food as well. Ram

Poor management

  • 1 of 5

We had several problems with the property manager of this unit, eatlovestay. We had rented this unit and the next door unit. First, they overbooked our stay and had to cancel one of our nights. They offered us a discount for the remaining units/nights, which we accepted, but then when the actual discount came through, it was less than what they promised over email. Then they never gave us our deposit back, saying they found a wet bed. When they stopped replying to my emails, I disputed the amounts with my credit card. I do not recommend working with this company (Sugam from Eat Love Stay).

Make sure constructin next door is finished.

  • 3 of 5

Pros: The pictures are absolutely accurate. This property is directly on the beach and the furnishings are all in good condition. The couch is quite comfortable and the television is a nice size. Bedrooms are very spacious.

The outside space is shared with the permanent tenants upstairs, but they used it mainly in the morning and late nights and were VERY quiet.

More than ample bedding and towels were available.

Having on site laundry was very much appreciated.

Off-street parking is provided.

Cons: There is a house under construction next door and the work day began shortly after seven each day. It is VERY loud.

Although there were plenty of towels, there were NO wash cloths.

The refrigerator is held closed by a piece of velcro. While functional, it seems inappropriate for a rental of this caliber.

Word to the wise: If you arrive after dark, the front door is beyond the staircase that goes to the upstairs unit. We had to call Mr. Sugam late at night when we couldn't get into the unit with the code provided, only to find out that we were actually trying to gain entry to the garage.

Where do you live?

Pictures are perfect.

  • 5 of 5

Overall I'd give it 94%. The Pictures are dead on. I loved seeing a moon set for the first time. My few suggestions to the owner and renters are: the first night we heard the planes from LAX. The 2nd and 3rd night, we were use to it and didn't hear it.

My suggestion to the owner is to add both sound proof - double windows to the bedrooms and full dark blinds to sleep in late - the neighbor had a light on - like moonlight - that on the first night was a small issue for us. I'd also love to see a hot tub for a few more bucks.

The only other issue midweek and during the day is some very slow construction a few hammers now from a neighbors house - a non issue after 5pm or on weekends rentals.

As I said, I love this rental with its great bike paths, beach and comfy perfectly decorated house. I would love to hire the decorator - a cross between beach style theme and ski lodge with it's woods and bricks, comfy leather couch and blanket. Study up on DirectTV as it is NO TIVO and it took a bit to learn to pause and record and then skip the ads on your favorite TV shows... but I mastered it after day one. Strongly recommended!

Playa Del Rey

The unit is a 2bdr/2bth lower unit in a duplex on the sand. You walk out to the inner patio on the sand with a fire pit, barbecue grill and few cane sofa and loveseats. The outer patio belongs to the upper unit in the duplex. Playa del Rey is a small California beach town centrally located in the city of Los Angeles. The town is quiet and is reminiscent of Los Angeles beach towns before they were heavily commercialized. Everything within Playa del Rey is within walking distance including restaurants, bars, spa services, and convenience stores. There are no chain type businesses in the town at all. Playa del Rey is a refreshing place in California to vacation - it feels hours away from the hustle of Los Angeles while being minutes from downtown Los Angeles, Beverly Hills and Santa Monica. Playa Del Ray, Marina Del Rey & Marina Peninsula Playa del Rey is located on the southern side of the Marina Del Rey water channel, a bit further south from Venice Beach. It is located four miles (6 km) north of Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
