This bright cottage sits between Ashintully Gardens (landscaped public gardens with winding brook, fountain, paths and hiking trails to the stunning ruins of Ashintully) and the McLennan Reservation on Round Mountain, 1000 acres of wooded hiking trails and the largest beaver dam in Berkshire County. The land around the cottage is under conservation restriction and there are plenty of places to hike and explore. You can hear the bells of a nearby monastery. Also very close to the Appalachian trail, several lakes and ponds, and the Tyringham Cobble, and a driveable distance from Bartholomew's Cobble, Mounument Mountain, the Ice Glen, Bash Bish Falls, Beartown State Forest and Mt Greylock. Close to Lee with restaurants and outlet mall, and Lenox, Stockbridge, and Great Barrington. 20 min drive to Tanglewood Music Festival, Berkshire Theatre Festival, Jacobs Pillow, Shakespeare and Company, Chesterwood, The Mount, Naumkeg, the Norman Rockwell Museum, and more. An hour from the Hancock Shaker Village, Williamstown Theatre Festival, and Mass MOCA.
This is a lovely house in a magical setting. The larger Ashintully property--including the ruins of the mansion at the top of the hill and the gardens right across the lane--is breathtaking, and having such proximity and access to it is a rare privilege. We had one especially memorable early morning hike up to the columns.
The cottage is simply beautiful, with modern crank-out windows that let you fill the house with breezes, and with gorgeous painted floors throughout. All decisions, large and small, have obviously been made with an eye for both esthetics and practicality, and the result makes for an appealing, comfortable and deeply satisfying place to relax and retreat. One of the nicest features is the new porch, which lets you sit and/or dine with a full view of the surrounding fields and hills. (The main road is close by, but it only bothered us on one occasion.)
Jennifer is an impeccable person to rent from: prompt and thoughtful, with lots of attention to detail. She makes sure you are happy. We have rented quite a few houses, and Jennifer is among the best to deal with.
This was our second stay at Ashintully and we loved it even more this time around. It's incredibly peaceful, while also enjoying close proximity to many other towns (Lenox, Lee, GB, Stockbridge, Monterey & Otis). There are three swimming options within 5 - 20 minutes away (Lake Garfield, Benedict Pond and the Tyringham swimming hole), and loads of walking/hiking choices. We walked on the Cobble at least once each day. The house itself is spacious, clean, and has everything you need, including a fabulous screened in porch where we spent most evenings. As others have noted, there is limited wifi and cell services, but what's available was fine for our needs (it's vacation, people: put the devices away). The owner Jennifer is very responsive and accommodating. I've rented a number of houses in the Berkshires, and Ashintully is by far my favorite.
We had a wonderful long weekend stay at the cottage. It was very clean and well-maintained - the best part was the new screened-in porch which gave you a beautiful view of the surrounding nature. The beds were comfortable, and first floor bedroom has full attached bathroom which is nice. The kitchen is very basic but everything worked and it was well-equipped. It was just about 10 minutes to Lee which we loved, and 20 minutes to Great Barrington and Tanglewood, so location was very convenient...and lots of hiking trails nearby. I would say if you're looking for a relaxed back-to-nature kind of weekend, this is a great place to stay. No frills (including no TV service and spotty cell/wi-fi) but clean and cozy. The owner was extremely responsive and helpful throughout the whole process.
The cottage was immaculate and in a great location. The owner is very responsive if there are any questions. Took my two teenagers and spent quality time: no internet distractions! We loved it.
My family and I loved Ashintully Cottage. It was by far the cleanest property I've ever rented, and everything we needed was there. It was particularly ideal for my older parents because two of the bedrooms are on the first floor. The cottage is located in the most amazing setting, and afforded us the opportunity to take walks and hikes every day, whether at nearby Tyringham Cobble or down the road and up to the Ashintully ruins. The cottage is convenient to everything: Stockbridge is 20 minutes away; Lee is just up the road; and Lenox and Great Barrington each 20 - 25 minutes away. Ready access to three swimming spots was a major benefit when the days got hot.
Jennifer was fabulous to deal with - very responsive. She provided all the information we needed before we arrived, which made the entire experience seamless.
We will definitely be back!
Our third visit to special Ashintully cottage was perfect. The owner's keen eye for beauty and comfort matches the incredible setting of this home. The cottage lends itself to privacy (4 bedrooms) and family times in wonderful country kitchen with beautiful views of surrounding country and living room. Incredible walking at Ashintully Gardens and surrounding country roads, nearby swimming and access to all Berkshire cultural attractions makes this a wonderful place to relax and recharge.
