You and your family will have unlimited access to Koru Village’s lovely ocean side pool, gym and fitness classes, Yoga by the Beach, Aqua Aerobics and also unlimited access to the famous, historical Avon Pier for fishing and sightseeing!

Our home is located at the end of the road in a quiet residential neighborhood, the landscaped grass lot backs up to a beautiful and serene protected southernly lands of Hatteras Island. The lot offers 8 feet of bulkhead and wide steps into Pamlico Sound for perfect water entry for world-class windsurfing and kiteboarding and also includes a large private dock on the canal. We provide you with two Kayaks and a Stand Up Paddle board if you want to paddle the sound; 5 bikes are provided for cruising around quiet, quaint Avon village, and to the Koru Spa. Avon is fully accessible by bike so you can go for family rides anywhere. 2013 brought bike paths to Avon, well placed off the road, up and down the island for safe, easy non-driving access north and south, to the beaches and stores.

The upper and lower decks of Too Much Fun offer stunning views of Pamlico Sound and its spectacular sunsets, as well as the marsh filled with wildlife and ever-changing light. See the pictures taken from our deck in the photo gallery. The night sky is awesome--on clear nights you cannot count the stars. In the late spring, you cannot count the fireflies. The large main deck has a secluded, shaded porch swing, picnic table, grill and plenty of chairs. The upper deck offers plenty of seating perfect for morning coffee accompanied by the morning birds or evening views of the most spectacular sunset on the east coast. On either deck, you will often hear the rumble of the ocean from one side and the soft lapping waves of the sound from the other side--and a chorus of chirping, singing birds all around. Fall and Spring are just as good as summer at our special spot on Hatteras.

The huge yard (3/4 acre) is nicely landscaped and has lots of grass for kids to play (if you would like, our croquet set and lawn games are available for your use).

The floor plan of the house is open, and the master bedroom (queen bed) and beautiful bath are separated from the two other bedrooms (1 with queen bed, 1 with pyramid bunkbed, twin over double) and bath. The kitchen offers a Jennaire Gas range, ultra quiet GE dishwasher new in 2013, side by side refrigerator with filtered water and ice in door, microwave and toaster, both new in 2016, good coffee maker, grinder and french press, cuisinart blender and food processor, rice steamer, wok, toaster oven, popcorn maker, and lots of other excellent cooking conveniences. You'll find a wide array of cookware, dishes, barware and stemware, more than suitable for good cooking for a lovely evening at home for the sunset and stars. The tile work in the bathrooms is truly stunning; both baths have lovely stone tile work, rain shower heads, the master bath includes a large soaking tub. In the shower, you'll find hand laid river stones under your feet. But to wash up after a day at the beach or in the sound, you'll be comfortable in our outdoor and very large, screened-in, hot & cold shower. The dressing area has a bench so it's fine for a real shower - clean and comfortable. The full laundry room, conveniently located inside and just off the foyer lets you take care of your clothes, so cleaning up is easy. No running up and down stairs to do the laundry! The quiet, high efficiency washer and dryer were new in summer '13.

You likely know about Hatteras Island, which is why you're considering a rental here. If you've been here before, you know how wonderful it is! If you haven't been here yet, you've got to come see it to believe it. Hatteras is unlike any other east coast beaches. Most of the island is protected national seashore, with some of the most beautiful beaches and best surf fishing anywhere. In 2014, US News Report ranked Cape Hatteras 3rd for beach destinations. And if that weren't enough for you, Pamlico Sound is known as the best place for windsurfing or kiteboarding on the East Coast. It's a great place to learn those sports, or perfect your technique, with its shallow water and reliable breezes--and there are many great instructors on the island, including our neighbor Jay Crawford of Outer Banks Kiting. But the shallow, warm waters of Pamlico Sound aren't only for kite borders and wind surfers and SUPers. Families with children young and old enjoy the calmer waters, particularly on a windy day. And in the evening, watching the kiters fly in the sunset is lovely, with or without a camera. Head south, and take a pleasant 10 minute drive to the Hatteras Lighthouse, the tallest and by most accounts the most beautiful lighthouse in the US. The view from the top of the lighthouse is superb! The island is home to many interesting shops, markets, restaurants, and local historical attractions like The Graveyard of The Atlantic Museum and The NC Maritime Museum, both within a 20 minute drive. Day trips north or south will yield wonderful adventures. Head south and hop on the ferry to the quaint fishing village of Ocracoke, the final hide-out of the island's most infamous visitor, Blackbeard, The Pirate. A trip one hour north takes you to Jockey's Ridge, for a fabulous climb of the tallest natural sand dune system in the Eastern United States. Bring your kites and a camera, it's fantastic!

We've designed the house to maximize everyone's enjoyment and relaxation. The game room, big protected yard, and ‘end of the road’ location lets the adults relax while the kids romp and play. A swimming pool and tennis court is available only a short bike or drive away. If you need a good work out, take advantage of our guest membership (new in 2015!) at Koru Spa, take yoga on the beach and get even more relaxed (which is hard to do, in this setting!), Koru Spa is nearby, only a short bike ride away.

You also have unlimited access to the iconic Avon Pier. Get your fishing on or just sightsee at sunset and enjoy an evening on the beach.

Come enjoy this beautiful, natural spot, nestled between Pamlico Sound and the marsh, canals and creeks of Avon Village, with the famous beaches of Hatteras island nearby. It’s a truly unique spot, and offers all the best of the Outer Banks. Make some memories and share the natural beauty of Cape Hatteras National Seashore with your family and friends..

We manage our property ourselves, our housekeeper lives in Avon and works closely with us to make sure you have the ultimate Hatteras Island vacation experience. She is there to help us help you - we all want to make your vacation truly amazing! Jim and I take pride in our home and prepare carefully for your arrival. If before you book with us, you have questions or concerns about the quality of house cleaning and attention to detail, please read our stellar (unsolicited) reviews. Our past renters will tell you about it better than we can.

About Eliza Trudeau

We live in Raleigh but get out to this beach paradise whenever we can. In Raleigh, Eliza is a speech pathologist, Jim does research, and Tom attends college in Illinois. Phoebe, the 5lb Yorkie, ferociously guards the house against deer, squirrels and other intruders in the woods behind our house and is teaching Lucy, the newest addition to the family that tiny can also be mighty.

Eliza Trudeau purchased this house in 2009

Why Eliza Trudeau chose Cape Hatteras

We bought this second home on Hatteras island because it wonderfully combined all the things we love best about the islands (miles of undeveloped beaches, stunning sunsets, and the perfect mix of activities and serenity) without the aspects we can do without (crowds and congestion, especially). Other beaches are closer to our home in Raleigh, but we don't mind the extra drive because when we arrive we are HERE--and no place else can compare! With the Pamlico Sound location, the peaceful wildlife setting, the sound-side and canal dock, it easy for us to know this was the perfect house for us. Our addition of the very fun gameroom made it even better!

What makes this house unique

Eliza's favorite morning is to ease slowly into the day, in the shady hiding place of the porch swing, surrounded by Carolina Jasmine and sweet bird song with sleepy eyes feasting on the glistening waters of the Pamlico Sound, the light playing off the reeds of the marsh with the pelicans and seagulls jockying for the best spot on the posts of the old mail pier. The best way to start the day!

The house was beautiful. By far one of our nicest rentals we've stayed in.

  • 5 of 5

This rental exceeded our expectations. Every detail of this home was well thought out. We were able to relax and enjoy our time spent in Avon. The kitchen was well appointed, and the beds were extremely comfortable. The weather wasn't the best a couple of days we were there, but we enjoyed staying in and relaxing at home. The hosts provided detailed information about the property, and the surrounding area. Overall one of the best vacations we have been on. We would love to come back and visit again.

Had a ball!!

  • 5 of 5

The house was clean and relaxed. We liked the fact that the bedrooms were on opposite sides of the living area so there was lots of privacy for couples with kids or multiple couples. The kitchen was well stocked and perfect for us since we cook our own food. We didn't use any of the toys, boats or game room but I am sure that would appeal to some. We stayed outside windsurfing, fishing or visiting local sites. There are plenty of places to eat, grocery store, hardware and bait all very close to the house. The house was close to other houses but it was also somewhat secluded. We never felt like we were overcrowded by other homes.

For sailers: It was perfect for us. The large yard allowed us to rig and stay rigged the entire week. There was a water hose for rinsing gear before leaving. Sails can be placed under the house for uv protection. The sound is about 50 yards away with nice steps through a sea wall. The water stays waste deep out about 200 years and then dropped off over my head so newer sailers might not like the off shore jibes in heavy chop. East or west winds mean shallow the entire time. You do get a confused chop because of the sea wall but just past the sea wall the chop is more predictable. I am not a kiter so I don't know how much room is needed to launch. The sound access is narrow so you might want to consider that. Canadian hole is a short drive so that is always an option for beginners. I would recommend this house for sailers for sure.

We enjoyed catching see mullet on the beach, blue crabs at the dock and kite flying at the beach. There is just so much to do.

The owners were super nice and available by text to answer any questions. We actually feel like we made some new friends and we hope to stay in touch. Of course we will be back also.

Had a great time and will be back

  • 5 of 5

The house was perfect for us. The house was well stocked with everything we needed and was clean and comfortable. We really liked the kitchen since we cook all our own meals. The bedrooms and baths were nice and are on opposite sides of the living area so this would be a good place for couples to share a visit. The tv was large and we were able to log into our Hulu and Netflix to watch some shows we enjoy. The decks were nice and provided a nice view of the sound. We did not use the game room area, bikes or boats. We liked the dock and we caught blue crabs for a small meal. Only a couple were of legal size but it was still fun. The house is close to everything you may need with lots of restaurants, groceries, hardware store and bait store. It's also close to the Avon pier so there is no problem getting beach access. We fished and enjoyed catching some good sea mullet. The kite flying is also wonderful.

For sailers: We windsurfed 4 out of our 7 days. The house has a giant grass rigging area that is sand spur free. We kept our sails rigged all week on the soft grass. You can also put the sails under the house to save them from uv issues. There is a water hose that can be used to rinse the gear. The sound access is a short 50 yard walk from the house. It has steps going down to the water from the sea wall. The water is shallow for launching and remains waste deep out about 300 yards. Further out it is too deep to stand. So beginners beware if you get out on a rough day. Canadian hole isn't far down the road if beginners need a shallow place for off shore jibes. On an east or west wind you can stand the entire time. I don't know anything about kiting but if you need a large access point for stretching lines this may not work. The access is narrow at the water. Once in the water this would be perfect for you. Oh, bring a weed fin anytime you sail here.

The owners were wonderful. They were available any time we needed advice. Just a quick text got us quick answers. We actually feel like we made some new friends and I am sure we will stay in touch. Can't wait to return next year at the same time for more fun. There is so much more we wanted to do. A week just isn't enough. Thanks so much for everything.

Great location! Quiet residential section right by the sound. Updates abound! From the nice fluffy towels, pretty wood floors, soft linens, electronics galore,....the list goes on. Kayaks are great fun in the sound. We managed to see deer on the bank further north while we were kayaking one day. About as serene an experience you can have. We had 3 girls, age 8, 9 & 10 with us and they loved the place. Nice to be able to get them into bed at night in their own room with a movie (plenty of selections) playing to ease them into sleep. The game room downstairs was fun but only after we cleared out all of the cobwebs and swept up a few dead bugs. Musty down there. A few minor hiccups: lock code didn't work at check-in so we had to contact owner to reset remotely which took a good 30 minutes to accomplish. Of course, that gave us a little time to check out the sound so not a biggie. 2 of the 4 burners on the stove were non-functioning so we had to juggle a bit to cook for 7 people each night. There were also a few cobwebs inside the house itself. We had window unit AC for the first 2-3 days which was a downer. Owner apologized for that since the guys who were supposed to install their whole house central AC unit came up sick and weren't able to get it done in time. Out of her control and kudos for getting them in on a memorial day holiday to actually install it. Very detailed instructions on everything were laid out nicely. Since my father and I were the only ones who actually read them, it was funny to watch everyone else try to figure out how to turn on the living room ceiling fan (hint: try the white remote-lol). Plenty of extras to take to the beach including 4 chairs, lifeguard style umbrella, Frisbees, sand toys, bocce ball, plus a wheeled cart to use to roll all that stuff over the dune.

Since our crew is pretty laid back, we were able to overlook the "hiccups" that I listed earlier and have a truly wonderful vacation. I could see where someone who...say resides north of the Mason-Dixon line, might not be able to overlook those hiccups.

Overall, a great vacation in a nice property. Would definitely do it again and recommend to my friends & family.

My husband and I were there last week and this house really does have it all. It's in excellent conditon, extremely clean and obviously loved by the owners. It's at the "end of the road," so you have lots of quiet and privacy. ( there are 3 houses around it but we never saw anyone at these places.) It has gorgeous sunrise and sunset views. There is a rooftop deck that is amazing. We spent a lot of time up there sipping wine and watching the world go by. Excellent birding spot and fun to watch activities on the sound. Both bathrooms are amazing. Kitchen is fully stocked. Comfortable furniture and beds. Great sound system and of TV. There is a game room on the ground floor that we did not use but it has a TV and chairs and lots of games. All in all, this was one OG the best VRBO experiences we have ever had - and we use VRBO frequently.
