Not very clean & needs remodeling
The unit could have used a hard cleaning. There were cobwebs in many places. It also needs a good remodel. The kitchen is vintage ‘80’s. the stove worked, but lacked many modern features. The bathrooms were similar. The porch furniture was very old. The privacy afforded by the unit’s location is lovely, but these issues detracted from the experience.
Beautiful Place With TLC Needed
The house itself is beautiful and spacious. The kitchen is well stocked. It has great proximity to the beach and nice views. However, we were a bit on edge all week as we had to deal with mice (someone did come set a trap for us - one mouse was caught,, more rat droppings were seen the next day but we never caught another mouse), large spiders and lots of bugs. We made a trip to the hardware store to buy bug and spider sprays. So we took care of them ourselves. We have stayed in other properties in St. George and other beaches and have never had such spider/bug/mice activity. We know a house will not be 100% bug free, but this home had way more than we felt comfortable with. We just feel the house needs a thorough cleaning of webs and a visit by an exterminator. We also were unable to get the dryer to work and had to hang out towels throughout the house to dry. (The dryer would run for a couple of minutes and then knock off. It did not seem to matter what setting we put it on.) Additionally, there were numerous lights out throughout the house and in one of the bedrooms.
The proximity to the beach is great. The boardwalk to the beach is in front of the house.5 min walk
Great house for adults and older children. The stairs would be dangerous for young children. The stairs have no backing and a small child could easily fall through. The architecture is very interesting. Our favorite area was the top floor with the kitchen, dining and sitting areas (open concept) that are surrounded by windows and sliding doors looking out to a beautiful view of the sunrise and ocean through the trees.
As easy a walk to the beach as if we were on it, but saved thousands. Pool was an easy bike ride and not to deep into the plantation so grocery shopping and dining was an easy drive. The house was shocking at first, but it grows on you. It feels like a tree house set above the pines. very private lot. The patios gave a great view of the ocean. Spacious and well appointed. It's an older beach house so a few maintenance issues, but Vivian was on the spot for the stuff that mattered. I didn't sweat the small stuff, I'm on vacation. Would've liked a king sized bed and probably would have been a wreck if I had crawling kids or toddlers because of the stairs, but i'm a helicopter dad so to each his own. We'll be back!
Nice enough house/location but lots of inconveniences!
The house and the location were just fine. The owner was also very responsive to our MANY contacts with her regarding questions or concerns we encountered during our two week stay. That being said, we encountered SO MANY situations which required owner-intervention over the course of two weeks, it really took away from the overall enjoyment of our vacation. I have stayed on St George Island in The Planation 12-15x over the past 20 years and in almost all of those instances, I don't recall having to contact the owner even once, so this was really over the top!
I took my 88 year old mother down for two weeks. I was there the first 9 days and my sister overlapped with me and stayed for week two. I had to contact the owner almost every day during my week regarding some sort of issue/question with the house, some days more than once. Many of these communications could have easily been avoided had the owner been more communicative with us or done a better job of getting the house ready for us before we arrived. Just lots and lots of little things...can't get the DVD player to work and I'm told to check to make sure a prior tenant didn't fiddle with the wiring. Why am *I* checking to make sure the devices in the house are functional? After 45 minutes of batting emails back and forth, it was determined that the required TV remote was elsewhere in the house and the batteries in both DVD remotes were dead. Again, little things, but why are WE fiddling with these on our vacation? The list goes on...upstairs lighting in the spacious living room which is quite confusing with no explanation as to which switches operate which devices. The two main lamps weren't even plugged in and the plugs were hidden under a couch, leading to further confusion. A dead scorpion, a live cockroach and a live mouse in the house...yuck! 88 year old mother having to use a barely functional 1950s-60s hand crank can opener because the electric one is hidden under the sink. Temperature controls on two levels but no explanation of this. It took us 3-4 days to find out why we were roasting at night because no A/C turned on in the bedrooms. The coup de grace was the septic system plugging up during my mother's last few days of vacation. The owner was on this promptly but my sis/mother were not able to flush toilets and were driving to a gas station for toilets for 24 hours. Overall, not the hassle-free experience we were used to and hoping for. Dave Utterback, LaCrosse, WI
