The Yosemite Dome Home is just a short drive down all weather highway 140 to the wild & scenic Merced River which offers swimming, fishing, and white water rafting. Highway 140 continues on through the beautiful Merced River canyon to Yosemite's Arch Rock entrance and Yosemite Valley. We are also close to the historic gold rush town of Mariposa which offers fine dining, museums, shopping, grocery stores, etc.
The Yosemite Dome Home is located on top of a private, peaceful, secluded oak studded hill offering scenic views in several directions. There are many deer, wild turkeys and other wildlife in the area that our guests frequently enjoy seeing.
Enter the Yosemite Dome Home and enjoy the spacious feeling created by the big pictures windows and the high domed ceiling complete with skylights. Most people remark on entering the home that "it looks so much bigger on the inside." The main floor offers a master suite with a queen size bed, dresser, and two closets. The beautiful dining area looks out a large picture window to a view that goes for miles over several ridge lines. There is a large living area with comfy couches to relax on, or enjoy the satellite high definition large screen TV and DVD player. A wood burning stove and gas heater add warmth during the cooler seasons. During the hotter months enjoy the refreshing cool breeze of the evaporative cooler. The spacious kitchen includes a gas range, oven, microwave, and refrigerator/freezer. Heading upstairs, you will find the 'Slumber Party Loft' which has a private dressing room and two 'wings' each with two twin beds and dressers. Out the rear door is a six foot chain link fenced yard. Enjoy the sweeping vistas as you sit out at the picnic table. At night, experience the stars as you've probably never experienced them before. About Irene Aborn
Yosemite Dome Home is owned and managed by Brad and Irene Aborn and is part of our 60 acre horse ranch. Brad's background includes flying jets and helicoptors for the U.S. Navy with five years on active duty and 20 years in the Reserves. Brad then went into civilian aviation and has worked for such companies as L.A. Airways, Martin Aviation, Downey Savings & Loan, Rockwell International, and the Boeing Company. After moving to Mariposa County, he ran for public office and was elected to a four year term as a Mariposa County Supervisor. Irene Aborn got her Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration and worked in the Banking industry after graduating from college. After a few years, she decided to pursue her dream of raising arabian horses and together Brad and Irene started Flying A Ranch Arabian Horses which has garnered world wide recognition. We were involved with breeding arabian horses for close to 30 years and have exported our horses around the globe.
Irene Aborn purchased this House in 2003
Why Irene Aborn chose Midpines
Yosemite has always been one of our favorite places and we were married in 1982 in the Yosemite Chapel in Yosemite valley. In 2003 we finally took the plunge and bought our dream ranch near Yosemite in beautiful Midpines. We chose the Midpines area for it's proximity to Yosemite and the Merced River while still being a convenient drive to the beautiful historic town of Mariposa and access to fine dining, shopping, etc. When we bought the ranch, the Yosemite Dome Home was the only structure on the property. Our family of five lived in the Dome Home for three years while our new ranch home was built. We really loved the time we spent living in the Dome Home and felt that others should have the opportunity to enjoy it also.
What makes this House unique
The Yosemite Dome Home is very private and secluded. The Dome Home is located on a private, gated road where you can enjoy peace and quiet after a day of exploring Yosemite. Everyone who stays remarks on how much bigger the Dome Home seems on the inside and how spacious it is. Wild turkeys and white tail deer are very commonly seen on the ranch. You may also see foxes, coyotes, bobcats, jack rabbits, and many species of birds. Guests are welcome to take a tour of the ranch as well. We are located in what is known as a "dark area" which means that there is no light pollution and night time star gazing is spectacular.

Rustic and relaxing...
We really enjoyed our stay here. We loved the views, the quiet, and the thousands of stars at night! We went hiking in Yosemite almost every day and also into Mariposa, nice little town and really has everything. Good restaurants, stores, food, nice people. The Dome home is really unique. Yes the space is older, not updated, very basic, but in our opinion only adds to the charm. Great get-away from big city life. Brad and Irene are very friendly, responsive, and accommodating. If you really want to get away from it all, this is your place.
Great Peaceful Secluded Mountain Dome Home
We enjoyed our stay at this secluded dome home, it's amazing views and especially being greeted on our first day there by a family of black tailed deer in the front yard. They did return a couple times during our week's stay. The daily visits from the wild turkeys kept us entertained and one of the best things was the horses on the property and the cutest little donkey. While the home does have some cosmetic issues inside and out from this past winter's storms, we understand these repairs are scheduled. It didn't affect the enjoyment of this private setting. The home was very spacious and comfortable, however, the only negative we found was the small shower. This could be a problem for a large person, so that does need to be considered. The location was fairly convenient with about a 40 minute drive to the southwest entrance to the park. Thank you Irene and Brad for your hospitality.
Perfect for a trip to Yosemite
This was perfect for what we needed! We were traveling with our dogs, and the outside fenced in area for them to run around in was great! The other reviews are correct about there being some cosmetic issues with the property (it is an older home, after all), so if you are not okay with that, you probably won't love this property; however, nothing was actually wrong with it - everything was purely cosmetic. We found it to be clean and the owners were great. Not to mention, finding a house this close to Yosemite for this price is quite the steal! It really did have some neat architecture too, and the pups loved running upstairs to look out of the low profile windows at the top of the dome!
I'm glad you enjoyed your stay in the Yosemite Dome Home and appreciate your kind review. Some of the cosmetic damage was due to roof damage during our severe winter storms. Because there was so much storm damage in the area the contractors have months long waiting lists to get work done. We have had the Dome Home's roof on the waiting list and it is scheduled to be replaced in September and once that is completed we have someone lined up to do the drywall work hopefully soon after. It is unfortunate that we haven't been able to get the work done sooner, but as you said it doesn't affect the use of the home or the beauty of the surroundings.
Perfect for us!
My dog, Charley, and I stayed for two nights so we could visit Yosemite. The house is comfortable and has a great view of the rolling hills below. Bright stars at night. The enclosed back yard allowed me to let Charley outside without watching him. Very comfortable bed.
My only quibble was with the kitchen description. It wasn't a problem for me, as I didn't want to do any cooking, but it isn't a fully stocked kitchen. The basics were there, dishes, silverware, pots, coffee maker. But no measuring cups, measuring spoons, sharp knives (besides one huge one), grater, peeler. On the other hand, who wants to cook when Yosemite beckons? And I'm sure Irene would lend you what needed-she lives just down the hill and was very accessible.
All in all, a great place to stay.
Very nice land/Nice people....BUT.....(read on)
(1)Driveway is a nightmare very muddy when it rains we almost got stuck several times and had a dirty car for 7 days if you have a nice vehicle this is not for you.
This needs to be fixed asap...a truck of gravel for 150.00+/- would take
30 minutes to fix the main issue.
(2)Drywall/plaster through out the house is coming off walls do to water damage
again not a huge cost to fix and definately needed.
(3)Shower is VERY small(36") but do able Im 6'3/ 260lbs(wasnt great)
(4)No washer dryer and only 3 towels provided for 7 days??? dumb...
(5)We lost internet for 4 of our 7days do to a crappy router in my opinion.
(6)We lost heat for 2 days do to not filling the propane tank or checking it before guests arrived...again dumb
(7)scorpion on wall Thursday maybe not a big deal?
****This place has so much potential really a shame only the minimum is being done.
Would not stay here again as it is right now and that is very unfortunate.
This is also my only bad review I have ever written and I have been using
VRBO for 20+ years with no issues....guess I was do.***
Overall we had a good trip despite accommodations the area is beautiful.
I am sorry there were a few unexpected glitches with your stay. In regards to the driveway, it has always had plenty of road rock on it and has never been a problem until the past couple of weeks. This year we have experienced an incredible amount of rain and some kind neighbors took it upon themselves to do a lot of grading which smoothed the road out but buried the existing road rock and left the road muddy. New road rock has now been put down and the road looks great! As far as the Internet goes, as I explained to you we have only one Internet provider in the whole mountain area. They were hit with a virus that caused hundreds of people across Mariposa and Oakhurst to lose their internet. Despite your repeatedly telling me you didn't care about the internet, I was very concerned about it and we spent hours standing in line with the hundreds of others who had the same problem and got it fixed. If you had stayed anywhere else in the Yosemite area during this time odds are you would have experienced the same problem with the internet. As far as the towels go, you are right that more should have been left out, but I told you if you needed anything to let us know. We were up there several times during your stay so I don't know why you didn't mention you needed more towels, they would have been happily provided. I also apologize for the propane but in our defense it had been recently filled and we have never had it run out anywhere near that quickly. All I can think is it must have been due to guests cranking the thermostat way up and really burning it out. The heat was not out for two days, you told us it went out that night and we did get the propane refilled within a few hours of you letting us know it was empty (so heat out less than half a day) and meanwhile there were space heaters and a wood stove that did a good job of keeping the home comfortable. UPDATE: The Dome Home now has a brand new roof and all the drywall has been fixed. Scorpions are not something we normally see and we appreciate you letting us know that you saw one, we have hired a service to routinely spray the house for bugs. I am sorry again that you experienced a few problems during your stay, some of them were beyond our control with the weather and the internet, but we did everything we could to fix things as quickly as possible. We appreciate your input as we strive to continue to improve.
A quiet and comfortable stay
My family spent three days at Brad and Irene's Dome Home, and we enjoyed it very much. The house is on the top of the mountain, with views of open fields. The house is nicely decorated, very spacious for the three of us, plus our little dog, and offers all we need for a quiet getaway. The house is conveniently located about 30 minutes away from Yosemite and less than 10 minutes away from Mariposa. In addition to the house itself, we also enjoyed the amazing starry nights, the wild turkeys and deer passing by the house. Thank you Brad and Irene, for sharing a piece of your paradise with us.
Close to Yosemite National Park and the wild & scenic Merced River. Fine dining, shopping, museums and more conveniently located in nearby Mariposa.
