This is a secluded gem of a cabin with craftsman touches in a very lovely setting. It sits in a private corner of the property with magical filtered light through the oak and redwood forest. South facing with a beautiful mountain/canyon view it is very spacious (aprox 600sf) with the tinted plaster walls and arches giving it a very warm, old world feel. The quaint little bedroom is accessed by an outdoor covered staircase and has a spectacular view of the canyon. There is very nice deck space on three sides of the cabin, where one can sit in sun or shade while enjoying the abundant bird life and forest/mountain/canyon views.Or relax in our deep clawfoot tub that sits in our redwood gardenroom. Deer and quail are commonly seen, with the occasional glimpse of a bobcat or fox.
We now have a wood-fired sauna on the property, which is available to guests as well as ourselves. The sauna has a large, covered deck and sits in a quiet location shaded beneath a giant live oak, with a beautiful canyon view. The perfect place to calm your spirit and feel the bounty of nature.
The property is conveniently located halfway between Carmel/Monterey Peninsula and Big Sur Proper. Three miles inland and over 1,100 ft in elevation, we are usually above the fog , which creates unique views as it moves in and out of the canyon like slow tide. We are 4/10ths of a mile up a well maintained dirt rd.......access is rarely a problem and then only during heavy storms in the winter months at these times 4WD is recommended , though not often necessary.
This land is a place for quietude and solitude...a place to be replenished and calmed by the simple beauty of nature. We hope that our guests treat this as an opportunity to experience these wildlands with reverence and come away refreshed in a way that only nature can deliver. So please respect this quiet for your sake as well as those who live here.

We have lived in the area for over 28 years, and on this property for 19 where we have raised a large family. All of our children still live in the area, and our 16 year old daughter, Sienna, is still with us. I am a carpenter/builder and have rarely had to leave this canyon for work while my wife, Monica, has worked for many years at a fine restaurant in Carmel though now she stays plenty busy running this business. We have been avid backpackers through the years, taking the entire family on many hikes. We are a storehouse of info regarding the best local restaurants, hiking trails, beaches, river spots, etc. so please feel free to ask.
Monica purchased this cabin in 2004
Since first passing through here as teenagers, we have felt that this is one of the most beautiful places in California, if not the entire country. There is a magic in the air here.
The peace one feels while living in the forest amongst the wildlife and beautiful always changing scenery. It is a spectacular area, and every year we feel its beauty more deeply.
My family of 4 loved this cabin. What a cute place and great location. It is definitely a little piece of paradise. We could have happily stayed on the quiet deck the whole time. We didn't get to meet the owners, but Monica had great communication with us prior to our trip. I highly recommend this place.
We stayed in the cabin for 2 nights with our young children. The cabin is so cozy and comfortable. We loved the sauna as well. We had so much fun and the kids were so sad to leave. We will definitely come back in the future. The kids said it felt like we were in the enchanted forest! Everything was perfect and we would recommend it for anybody. Thank you Monica and Joel, we made some great family memories there.
My wife and I stayed in Monica and Joel's cabin for a week with our 1-year-old son. We used the delightfully remote location as a basecamp for exploring the central coast and doing a number of day hikes. The main parts of Big Sur proper are easily accessible and it's nice to be close enough to Carmel and Monteray to make it up to the grocery store or the aquarium. The lodgings are well-equipped, charming, and beautiful. The views are stunning, the cabin is cozy. Monica and Joel made sure we had everything we needed to make our stay memorable. Highly recommended!!
My boyfriend and I stayed here 5/28 (apt) and 5/29(cabin). Thank you Monica and Joel for sharing your property with us. Everything was just perfect. I would recommend bringing your own food to cook (both places have full kitchen). We had never used VRBO before so we were a bit nervous on what to expect but we had no issues whatsoever. We relaxed and watched movies, cooked, hung outside and listened to nature and the best part for me was the outdoor bath! Our only regret is not staying longer. Thank you so much again for sharing this gem with us, we really enjoyed ourselves.
We just returned from four nights at the Big Sur Craftsman Cabin..and it was just a delight. The more we were there, the more we saw...both inside the well appointed and designed cabin to the wondrous canyon of trees overseen from the deck. We are hoping to return and do R&R again ... it works so well. We are birders and were delighted by the view of birds from this vantage point. We hiked in the local state parks, drove down to Esalen for a massage, enjoyed the sauna...perfect for travelers who love to be self-sufficient and enjoy the natural setting.
The cabin is beautiful--clean, roomy, comfortable, quiet, great for cooking meals. Also, it had terrific views of a canyon from the deck. I really enjoyed staying there. The one issue I had was the bathtub. It was hard to get the water hot--I had to heat water on the stove and keep adding it to the tub. Since the outdoor bathtub was a big draw for me, this was rather disappointing (the sauna looked nice but I'm not really into dry saunas so didn't try it). Lots of privacy at the place. Didn't really speak much to Monica and Joel, but they seem like nice people. If you're looking for real privacy and don't mind the difficulties with the bathtub, then I'd recommend this place highly. If, however, you want a little more contact with your hosts (like in a b&b) and/or are going for the bathtub, I'd go elsewhere.
