Cabin, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-5))
This is a secluded gem of a cabin with craftsman touches in a very lovely setting. It sits in a private corner of the property with magical filtered light through the oak and redwood forest. South facing with a beautiful mountain/canyon view it is very spacious (aprox 600sf) with the tinted plaster walls and arches giving it a very warm, old world feel. The quaint little bedroom is accessed by an outdoor covered staircase and has a spectacular view of the canyon. There is very nice deck space on three sides of the cabin, where one can sit in sun or shade while enjoying the abundant bird life and forest/mountain/canyon views.Or relax in our deep clawfoot tub that sits in our redwood gardenroom. Deer and quail are commonly seen, with the occasional glimpse of a bobcat or fox.
We now have a wood-fired sauna on the property, which is available to guests as well as ourselves. The sauna has a large, covered deck and sits in a quiet location shaded beneath a giant live oak, with a beautiful canyon view. The perfect place to calm your spirit and feel the bounty of nature.
The property is conveniently located halfway between Carmel/Monterey Peninsula and Big Sur Proper. Three miles inland and over 1,100 ft in elevation, we are usually above the fog , which creates unique views as it moves in and out of the canyon like slow tide. We are 4/10ths of a mile up a well maintained dirt rd.......access is rarely a problem and then only during heavy storms in the winter months at these times 4WD is recommended , though not often necessary.
This land is a place for quietude and solitude...a place to be replenished and calmed by the simple beauty of nature. We hope that our guests treat this as an opportunity to experience these wildlands with reverence and come away refreshed in a way that only nature can deliver. So please respect this quiet for your sake as well as those who live here.

We have lived in the area for over 28 years, and on this property for 19 where we have raised a large family. All of our children still live in the area, and our 16 year old daughter, Sienna, is still with us. I am a carpenter/builder and have rarely had to leave this canyon for work while my wife, Monica, has worked for many years at a fine restaurant in Carmel though now she stays plenty busy running this business. We have been avid backpackers through the years, taking the entire family on many hikes. We are a storehouse of info regarding the best local restaurants, hiking trails, beaches, river spots, etc. so please feel free to ask.
Monica purchased this Cabin in 2004
Why Monica chose Carmel-by-the-Sea
Since first passing through here as teenagers, we have felt that this is one of the most beautiful places in California, if not the entire country. There is a magic in the air here.
What makes this Cabin unique
The peace one feels while living in the forest amongst the wildlife and beautiful always changing scenery. It is a spectacular area, and every year we feel its beauty more deeply.

The second we arrived at this beautiful cabin, my husband and I wished we had booked a longer trip. It is just that perfect. The cabin itself is beautiful and the setting can't be beat. The kitchen was impressively stocked for a vacation rental - even sharp knives and a coffee grinder. The outdoor bathtub and wood burning sauna took the experience to another level. The location is super convenient for visiting both Big Sur and areas to the north. Seriously perfect in every way and I can't wait to go back.
We're so happy you found the cabin so perfect for your stay! We do pride ourselves in being as accommodating as possible. Looking forward to your next Longer visit!
We enjoyed our stay at the Big Sur Craftsman Cabin. It provided a tranquil retreat and a well located base for touring Big Sur. Surrounded by natural beauty, the cabin was clean, charming and well furnished. The location was private and included a lovely wood heated sauna. Our hosts, Monica and Joel, were welcoming and responsive to our needs. We would not hesitate to return and recommend the cabin to our friends. Thank you!
Serene, romantic retreat for couples
We had a fabulous stay here. This property is exactly what we were looking for... a quiet, peaceful getaway surrounded by nature. We got groceries and spend 2 days taking baths, cuddling, and cooking together. We couldn't have asked for a better retreat. The only negative (and I feel bad even saying "negative") was the bed. Although the bed was surrounded by beautiful windows and it was a stunning room (decorated so tastefully and really keeping with the style of the cabin), the bed itself was rough on my arthritis as it was just a futon mattress.
Other than that, the entire property was absolutely stunning and we would stay there again... I would just bring some extra support for my back :)
Sorry that the bed was not comfortable for you- probably the memory foam topper was the issue. Another option is the new queen futon couch (very firm) downstairs. We look forward to you coming to visit again!
We loved the location. The place was very clean. It had charm and character. Very unique layout. Loved the wood stove in the living room and spending time on the back porch.
wonderful cabin in the woods
Great spot to get away from it all. Quiet and lovely view over the valley. Loved the morning sun and coffee on the deck. Access to cabin is steep for last 1/4 mile but we had no problems in our rental car. The sauna was a treat too. Hot tub is exactly that, a secluded bath tub with views over the oak woodland. As a party of birders we had a great time spotting some 30 + species from the balcony after a day on the busy coast highway. Would visit again!
So glad you enjoyed yourselves here! And we never realized how many different types of birds visit us here! Thank you for listing them for future guests! Look forward to seeing you again!
Big Sur is stunning. Monica was lovely and accommodating. The cabin is very quaint. The only thing I would clarify is that there is not hot tub, it's an outdoor bathtub!
