We (family of 5) stayed at the BlueShack between Christmas and New Years this past year. The house was great - modern, open, clean, and even larger than it appeared in the pictures. We loved being "in town" and just a short walk from the beach, great places to eat, and even an organic market. The owners were wonderful and even connected us with a great Dominical contact for surfing and activities - Dominical WaveRider. Definitely look them up if you're in Dominical, they had all of us up surfing the first day, we even ended up going back for more lessons and board rentals. The local contact for the house in Dominical was incredibly helpful and just an all round really nice guy.
We really liked all the places to eat in town just a short walk from the house - El Pescado Loco tacos, Soda Nanyoa just across the street, and SuRaza. Mono Congo has great vegetarian options and great coffee. The restaurant PorQueNo is a short drive away with great food and an even more amazing view - go early for the sunset.
Already planning a return trip, we couldn't recommend BlueShack more!
This home makes the perfect headquarters for your stay in this part of CR. We enjoyed the spacious kitchen, gas range, large back deck, giant shower, and the room to spread out. This property would be excellent for a large family.
The three bedrooms were sparsely furnished but certainly met our needs. The bathroom is quite large and the walk-in tiled shower was certainly big enough for two. We enjoyed cooking in the enormous kitchen. There were plenty of pots, pans, and cooking implements (though the forks were in short supply - I imagine previous renters had made off with them). We liked spending our evenings on the large back deck enjoying cuba libres and listening to the tranquil night sounds (bring insect repellent).
You'll find a grocery two doors down with everything you'd need and a larger Super up the hill across Costanera Sur from the entrance to Dominical. The town itself has great tacos, sushi, an awesome inexpensive soda, shops, surf lessons, your standard pizza place, and anything you might need to enjoy your beach stay. Nothing in town is more than a 5 minute walk. The rocky beach and surf swells were too much for us to bathe at Dominical beach but we took advantage of the short drive to Playa Hermosa several times and enjoyed the fine sand and shady beach there. This home is a perfect launching pad for trips to Manuel Antonio, Parque Marino Ballena, or any of the nearby gorgeous beaches.
This rental has no central air conditioning but the fans helped us stay cool at night. The owner of this property was easy and pleasant to work with and their local contact in Dominical was helpful, friendly, and very nearby had we needed him (we didn't have any trouble at all, so we didn't need to reach him). Don't plan to sleep in here - the early sunrise woke us each day. Bring plenty of sunscreen and insect repellent. We bought a cooler and ice at the nearby grocery. The gated parking area in front of the house was a little tough to navigate with two separate parties (one each in the upstairs and downstairs units) but we parked on the street in front of the Blue Shack without incident. (We left the windows partly down and doors unlocked per local advice). The unit was stocked with games and books, a small tv (which we didn't use), and great wifi service.
If you are looking for a modern, spacious, no-frills beach pad this is your place. Highly recommended!
My girlfriend, 2 young boys and myself headed to the Blue Shack this spring 2014 for a 2-week stay. Although we had seen pictures, we were stunned on arrival by how clean, modern and big the house actually was. The house is also conveniently located in the middle of the main road in Dominical with a lot of services (grocery, restaurants, liquor store, laundry) and most importantly, the beach, within walking distance. We were also impressed by how isolated it was from all the dust and noise coming from the, sometime, busy street outside. The house is also well secured with high walls, gate and secured room, no stress there.
Despite the very warm outside temperature during our stay (even according to the locals) we were always comfortable in the house thanks to all the fans. The 3rd floor terrace is a really nice spot to relax in the hammocks or watch the sunset over the ocean...
The owners were very helpful during the booking, responded quickly to any questions by emails and also helped us organized our stay. Their onsite "representative" is the coolest guy and he also helped us a lot.
Dominical is mainly a surf spot but, it is also perfect for beginners like us. There are surf lessons and board rental all over the place. The good thing is that it is not a crowded destination so, the vibe was relax and chill just as we had hope! There are many other things to do in the area accessible by car or taxi by yourself or with an organized tour; reptile zoo, waterfalls, sea caves, snorkelling, diving trip, horse back, hiking, national parks, ...
There are many restaurants in town for many different taste and budget. Our favourite were the taco Tuesday at San Clemente Bar and Grill and the pizzas from La Casita. We also cooked a lot in the huge and fully furnished kitchen of the Blue Shack including a gas stove and an espresso machine.
All in all, we had a great time in Dominical and the Blue Shack definitely had a key role in the success of our vacation. We are looking forward to go back!
We stayed at Blueshack for 10 days last year. It was beautiful, open, clean, and inviting. Located in the appealing town of Dominical, it was also just down the street from the beach -- where we experienced the most amazing sunsets every evening. The owners were helpful, organized, and wonderful. I couldn't recommend blueshack more!
This is the most amazing place. Working in a highly stressful job and traveling as much as I do, I sometimes need a place to escape and leave the world behind. Blue Shack is the place. The tranquility of the ocean and beach allows you to just enjoy where you are and completely forget about reality. Hammock Heaven is the perfect place for a relaxing siesta in the shade in the afternoon before preparing a gourmet meal in the fully equipped kitchen to take to the beach. Nothing like having dinner of all local and fresh products while watching the sunset to make you forget about the stresses of life. I have been going to Blue Shack for the past few years and it is already on my calendar for next year. Just like Christmas, birthdays and taxes - a visit to the Blue Shack is something that must be done every year!
This house is incredibly impressive. Great tiny surfer town with amazing locals to chat with daily. The beach is spectacular and for any surfer this is paradise. The house is spacious with a view of the beach on the top floor from some great hammocks to lie in. Perfect vacation spot for a group of friends, family and the two separate houses allow for great privacy if you'd like some! Can't rave about this house enough!
Located in the heart of Dominical, the Blue Shack is a two minute walk from the surf, and all local activities and tours. Surf lessons, zip line tours, waterfall tours, deep sea fishing, scuba diving and snorkeling, rafting and kayaking, whale watching and bird watching tours, yoga and dance classes, jungle treks, horseback riding and yes, even basket weaving/arts and crafts classes! If you're not feeling too adventurous, take a nice sunset stroll on the beach, or relax with a good book in a hammock while watching the surf. Beautiful animal/bird filled marshes, and ocean surf/river mouth views. And although within walking distance of over 10 local bars and restaurants, you will always get a quiet, peaceful sleep at The Blue Shack. Dominical beach has lifeguards on duty every day of the week, and with some of the best surf schools and instructors in Costa Rica, you're sure to have a great time in the waves! And make sure you get to Dominical Sushi for a Tico Roll and the best fresh fish in town!
