Great place to stay on the island!

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from our first trip to Dauphin Island. Sandy Hook was a great choice for us and our 2 small children. The house was a very nice size so we had plenty of room. Everything was clean, the kitchen had every thing we needed to cook. My kids loved the back room with the futon. 2 TV's was a plus so they had their own space at night. Nice fluffy towels in the bathroom. The beds were very comfortable. The house is in a great location. We brought our bicycles and rode just about anywhere we wanted on the island. The bakery and Ship and Shore we could walk to if needed. The owners are very easy to communicate with. Dauphin Island is a wonderful laid back place. Nothing touristy, which is exactly what we were looking for! We would definitely recommend to anyone considering staying here.

Great House.

  • 5 of 5

Great house, centrally located. Owners could not be more hospitable. Cooked in the kitchen most nights and found almost everything that we needed. Great bakery nearly in the backyard and store was a close walk as well. Would definitely rent house again should we come down to visit family in the future.

Wedding getaway

  • 5 of 5

This was the absolute best vacation rental we have stayed in! My husband, I , and 3 small children traveled to mobil for a wedding and decided to stay on island for a few days. The house was better than we could have imagined! Everything was nice and clean and very spacious. The house had everything we needed to cook our own meals. The owners were extremely accommodating and were always a phone call away. They made us feel as if we were staying at a family members home. There were bikes and plenty of towels and dishes. Everyone on the island was pleasant and helpful! Beach was beautiful and seafood at Skinners was local and fresh! I truly appreciate the owners for being so nice we definitely did not expect them to be so warming! Will definitely be back next year!

Dauphin Island is a barrier island located three miles south of the mouth of Mobile Bay in the Gulf of Mexico. Entry to the island is made by crossing a three mile long high rise bridge which was opened in July, 1982 after the original draw bridge was destroyed by Hurricane Frederic in 1979. An automobile ferry from the eastern shore also offers an entry point on the eastern end of the island. The island is approximately 14 miles long and 1 ¾ miles wide at the widest point. The eastern six miles are inhabited while the western 8 miles are undeveloped and privately owned. It is estimated that 1300 permanent residents call Dauphin Island home. The number of residents soars during vacation and holiday times. The entire island has been designated as a bird sanctuary and thousands of visitors come to experience the annual migrations.

You're able to walk to most activities and bicycle riding gets you to the places that walking doesn't. Three of the islands 5 restaurants are walking distance. The beaches are accessible via bicycle, short car ride, or the town's public transportation (two minivans). The cottage is one block in one direction and 1/2 block in the other direction from the bicycle path. The path is a separately paved trail that runs nearly the entire length of the Island. There is a large bird sanctuary that provides excellent walking paths - you'll see beach, forest and swamp on the walk. We love to go there. There is also a small forested bird watching area that we like to walk through as well (an old Indian mound). The Estuarium is also great. They often have fun classes as well as a great tour through their fish/sea life exhibits.
