Captain Phil is the owner of Storm Petrel. He has been chartering in the Caribbean and Cape cod since 1992. He is a USCG licensed captain, speaks German, some French and Spanish. He has lived in Guadeloupe, Switzerland, and wherever Storm Petrel takes him. The co-owner and co-captain of Storm Petrel is Laura, an RN for over 25 years. She loves cooking, sailing, and fishing, and has been Phil's charter partner for the past 9 years.
Phil and Laura purchased this boat in 1990
Phil is a native Bostonian, and knows these waters well. From Falmouth, the sail can take you across Buzzards Bay to the Elizabeth Islands, Cuttyhunk, or longer sails can go to Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket. In the winter, St Thomas is easily accessible by commercial flights. Red Hook is at the east end of the island, and an ideal starting point for your charter vacation. The US Virgin Islands of St John and St Croix are an easy trip, and the beautiful British Virgin Islands are not more than a few hours sailing away.
The ultimate way to traverse the Islands is by boat, drifting from one island to the next, sleeping under a million stars. Chartering Storm Petrel allows you to create your own schedule, with no ferries to catch, and no rush to check out of a hotel in the morning. She can take you to places only accessible by boat, and you always have a waterfront room! Storm Petrel is a safe and comfortable sailboat. She makes her yearly trips to the US Virgin Islands for the winter, to Cape Cod for the summer, for chartering in both locations.
Dear Laura and Phil, thank you so much for letting us stay on your boat! It was such a fun experience! I loved boogie boarding! Gabby (12 y/o)
We had such an amazing time! Great Company! Hope we can do this in St. Thomas! Mitch
Loved the fishing and the company by the sea! Maya
We went to st Thomas and had a great time sailing the British and us Virgin Islands. Phil and Laura are excellent hosts and tour guides and Laura is an amazing cook! Nothing better than starting your morning with a steaming cup of French press followed by a swim !
Storm Petrel may not be the most glamorous boat in the Marina but as the home of Captain Phil and Laura, every last practical detail has been thought of and the boat has everything you could possibly want for a perfect sailing holiday. Her steel hull keeps her cool and dry below deck and she is very stable in the water. More importantly, I would rather be on a boat having fun with Phil and Laura than aboard some fancy yacht bound by all manner of rules with a precious skipper reluctant to have interfering crew mates! Phil and Laura were the most easy going and lovely couple you could ever wish to meet and were generously accomodating to me and my three teenage kids. We were allowed to do much of the sailing and navigation and Phil was keen to teach us as much as he could during our time aboard. He always remained good natured even when I steered the boat only horseshoe shoal and when we laughed at his ecclectic CD collection! We loved the fact that we could sail to a new and exciting location every day and have time ashore. We also loved the swimming and fishing. The biggest surprise was the absolute luxury and sheer indulgence of having 5* food served up three times a day by Laura - in American speak I would say it was "awesome". The kids are still talking about it. For anyone reading this review, please accept my utter and unconditional endorsement that any time spent aboard Storm Petrel ( and more importantly in the company of Laura and Phil) will be the best time ever. I definately hope to be back again.
my husband I just got back from a wonderfully romantic romantic sail around Saint John. Our tour guides, captain Phil and first mate Laura, were wonderful hosts!the snorkeling was great laura is an amazing guide she knew where all the sea creatures hide. She is also an amazing chef. We did not expect to be served such devine food. captain Phil taught us a lot about sailing, he is very patient, calm and knowledgeable.we were only off the boat for 15 hours the whole week!we are looking forward to another adventure next winter!
I could not have been happier over the whole experience. The boat was lovely and handled beautifully, especially under sail. Phil and Laura were warm, helpful, funny, delightful companions, and expert sailors. Laura is a superb and innovative chef, producing miracles from her tiny galley. I'd forgotten how peacefully one sleeps aboard a sailboat, and the wonderful motion they have underway. A truly memorable week, one I would gladly repeat.
Had a wonderful trip with great hosts. They could not do enough for us.
Would recommend this trip to anybody who is fit.
The Cape Cod area is very beautiful
My wife & I bareboat often from Greece to the Caribbean. We are familiar with life aboard a sailboat. But the high tides and strong currents in the New England area made us want to charter a sailboat with an experienced Captain. And what a success it was to find Captain Phil and 1st Mate Laura! They were both terrific! Phil threw me the charts and tide books and allowed me to participate as much as I wanted to . And Laura totally surprised me day after day with some of the best food ever-including such items as "ship-made" crab cakes, homemade chutney sauce, and even homemade bread pudding (made especially for me). In short order, Phil & Laura became sailing buddies and my wife & I had days of fun laughing and learning about the waters Nantucket Sound. We plan to sail with them soon, perhaps on a voyage exploring the Spanish Virgin Islands.
A different island every day! Mix it up, it's your vacation: swim, snorkel, hike, shop, sunbathe, relax with a rum punch, etc
