We love the peace and quiet on our 200 feet of private beach. We love the view across the bay to the mountains of Acadia National Park.We love watching the sunrise from the sun porch and the moon on the water at night. And we love watching to see a glimpse of seals in the bay.
We stayed there late May 2011 and it was great. It's on the mainland, very near the lobster pounds and the bridge to Mt. Desert Island. The location is the best of both worlds. The cabin had all of the needed amenities, but still retained the rustic qualities and atmosphere of being a cabin. It's exactly as the pictures on the web site show it. We feasted on lobsters and steamers in the eating area which has such a beautiful view! No TV, which was great. It's in a nice quiet area, on a very tiny road. We saw a (smaller type) whale right from the cabin!
Don't miss the really cool nearby medium-sized grocery store nearby "hidden" with the gas station. Or, a few miles away on the mainland you can find all of the big stores. We settled on a family-run place just outside of Bar Harbor as our favorite place to buy lobsters to cook at the cabin. Be sure to visit the other smaller towns on the island in addition to Bar Harbor. Everything there is the real thing.
The owners were great to deal with. We loved the cabin, the area, and had a great time.
From the moment we walked through the door, we felt like we were home. Bob and Pat have thought of everything one could possibly need. The location could not be more perfect - close to activities in Acadia/Bar Harbor yet just far enough away from the hustle and bustle in order to relax. Our week was full of adventure (hiking, biking, kayaking) as well as unwinding - either on the wonderful sun porch, on the deck or on the private beach. I have already highly recommended this cottage to family and friends - and hope to have the opportunity to stay here again in the future.
We had such a great time staying in this cozy cottage. The sunroom overlooking the water was my favorite place to sit. We saw seals playing and the fog rolling in at night. At high tide, you can hear the water from the master bedroom which just lulled us to sleep. The kitchen has everything you need to cook meals if you want. Although there is not a washer and dryer, the kitchen sink is plenty big to rinse out a few items of clothes. Also, there is no wifi or TV which we thought was a bonus and we didn't miss either one at all! There is a radio so we listened to music. Cell service (Verizon) worked great! You can rent kayaks from a local company that will deliver right to the cabin (or bring your own) so we enjoyed the Western Bay waterfront access from the cabin. The cabin is located on a very quiet road and only 7 miles from the main entrance to Acadia National Park, 9 miles to Bar Harbor, and 10 miles to Ellsworth. We did not have any traffic to deal with. Lots of restaurants nearby and an IGA grocery that has everything else you might need. They even sell spirits and Maine's famous blueberry wine. Thank you Pat and Bob for sharing your cabin and we hope we can get to Maine again soon. There are many more hiking trails that we need to do.
We have been renting this cottage every year now for almost 10 years. When we open the door, we feel as if we never left. Everything one needs to experience a quintessential Maine coast vacation is right here in this cottage. We come for respite and rest, others come to experience all the area has to offer. If you are looking for high tech entertainment (ie; WiFi and cable TV) then this is not the spot for you. If you crave relaxation, privacy, quiet, and the ocean outside your window with your morning coffee...Then you have found the place. The owners could not be more helpful, communicative and considerate. It has been a pure delight to head to Trenton every Fall. Thank you Pat and Bob!
Banach Cottage is well placed for a holiday near Acadia. There is lots to do for every persuasion - hiking, touring, shopping in Bar Harbor, the Wild Acadia park, near Ellsworth, for the kids (we particularly enjoyed the water slides) - all within easy driving distance. We were lucky to have temps in the mid70s the whole week, a little chilly in the AM, but a sweatshirt and the sunroom more than compensated. I am sure the woodstove is perfect in the cooler months. We enjoyed our coffee every morning just looking out over the cove, counting how many times we saw a seal's head pop out and on our last morning a seal came within 30 feet of the water's edge at high tide. If one has keen sight you may also luck out and see porpoises in the cove, too. The cottage is well appointed, well kept and cozy. There is a full galley kitchen, which any cook will appreciate. However, as I was on holiday the extent of my cooking was a few boiled eggs, French press coffee in the AM and sandwiches for lunch - lol! The tranquility offered by this property was what drew us to rent it and we were not disappointed.
Agree with some of the reviews, but couldn't give five stars. Great location without a doubt and the breakfast view is fantastic. It is away from the hustle and bustle of Bar Harbour, but close enough to visit all of MDI. The cabin is well equipped, but standard of facilties, such as the bathroom are cramped and basic - remember it lacks facilities for washing clothes, which can be a problem if you are travelling light.
It is quite dark inside the cabin, even with the lights on and the temperature is difficult to control. There is a fan to circulate the air when it is hot and the wood burning stove and some heaters to help when it is chilly.
The photographs look good, as do ours, and there are many people who have loved staying here and return, but for us it didn't tick enough boxes.
We very much enjoyed our stay at this property. If you love nature, you will love this place. Plenty of birdwatching, seal and porpoise sightings. We spent many an hour beach combing among the rocks and pebbles.
The sunroom in the cabin affords an open view of the bay and mountains of Acadia park. The kitchen has every implement a cook would need. The bedrooms are cozy. The woodstove kept off the chill of a Maine night. The cabin was stocked with just about anything you would need (bring your own bed linens remember) I did not tell my daughter (21) and husband there would be no tv...heehee. But they adjusted quickly. Although there is one set of binoculars at the cottage, bring a pair for everyone!
The cottage is in a perfect location. Easy to travel to Acadia Park and Bar Harbor, yet a quiet oasis at the end of the busy day. Hint: Ellsworth, a town 5 minutes in the other direction, is a good place to buy essentials without paying Bar Harbor tourist prices.
Other Activities: kayaking; short drive to Acadia National Park
