About Kelvin

Kelvin & Cecilia 'CC' Troughton of Hampton Cove, AL by way of Hong Kong and New Orleans. We have two daughters and three wonderful grandsons. We are outdoor enthusiasts and welcome like-minded, mountain adventurers--we hope you enjoy the Beech House as much as we do!

Kelvin purchased this cabin in 2003

Why Kelvin chose High Country & Blue Ridge Mountains

Spectacular views of the Appalachian Mountains; stepping off point for many outdoor activities suited for all ages. In 2012 we completed a total renovation; new appliances, furniture, counter tops [granite] hardwood flooring [bamboo] re-decorated and built new wrap-around decks. In 2016 added A/C and extended the kitchen to provide a separate dining room.

What makes this cabin unique

Winter: Ski in/ski out + panoramic mountain and ski slope views.

Summer: Hiking + Biking + Rafting + Wildlife at 'Grandfather Mountain' + 'Tweetsie Railway' [nearby Boone] + Fishing + Gold panning + Scottish Festival at Grandfather Mountain.

If you live near or within the perimeter of Huntsville/Birmingham AL - Nashville/Knoxville, TN - Raleigh/Durham, NC - Atlanta, GA - Columbia, SC then you are within an easy day’s drive of Beech Mountain. Leave home in the morning, check-in in the afternoon and you can be night ski-ing the fully lighted slopes, the very same day.

And if it’s a Summer/Fall vacation you are looking for, hike on further down this page for seasonal info.

Just compare all the time taken and the rising costs of airfares to reach the “Rockies” with the economies of scale for family and friends traveling on a memorable road trip to Beech Mountain.

At 5,505 ft. Beech Mountain is the highest ski resort in the East and with an 850 ft. vertical drop, there are plenty of slopes ranging from “Bunny Hill” to Black Diamond”.

Just 200 yards down Skiloft there is a sledding hill and an ice skating rink is featured at the resort complex.

Leave your regular wheels in the 3-car driveway for an easy walk down Skiloft past the sledding hill to several family style restaurants “The Brick Oven” [Crazy-golf + game room] also the renowned “Fred’s Mercantile”. As Fred says in his slogan “If we don’t have it, you don’t need it”! His deli has it all too.

After a day’s skiing and feeling warmly worn out, watch the floodlit action from the deck then curl up in front of the gas log fireplace and satellite TV or, select from the many board games for some more family fun.

And let’s take a look at our Summer and Fall, out-door welcoming temperatures and gentle, mountain breezes.

“The Beech House” is right at the start of “Emerald Outback” phase one of the new “Beech Mountain Adventure Trail Park” a wealth of unique terrain obstacles and gravel/logging bailouts – free!

There’s a wealth of hiking trails for all levels too.

Prefer cooking “Alfresco”? The wrap-around decks are equipped with propane barbecue grill, picnic table, chairs and benches.

And there’s more! The house comes with guest member privileges to the Beech Mountain Club, swimming, tennis, fitness center, restaurant, library and golf, organized hikes and camp for kids too.
