I purchased this rental because it was contiguous with property I already owned. I had lived in Marathon for 6 years and knew this would be a worthwhile invest for me and an opporunity for travelers to enjoy a very unique experience in West Texas
Really nice location on the edge of town with great vistas of the mountains. Nice yard too with a little pond and outdoor sitting area. (You can still hear the Marathon train, but that's true anywhere in this town.) Great working fireplace and all the necessary amenities. Love the Mexican style bathroom. Some of the furniture and comforters could use some sprucing up - just a bit on the rough side - and the kitchen could use some more items to make cooking easier, but all very nice. Very nice hosts too.
My husband and I spent 3 nights at this rental and disagree with the other reviews. We found it to be overpriced for what you get. The patio was an important feature to us. The view from the patio is fantastic, but you better bring your own chairs. There is an old wooden bench on the patio but it is not comfortable and is difficult to move. There is also a chiminea on the patio but the chimney part of it is broken and laying in pieces right next to it. The patio itself has broken stones and had tall weeds growing out of it during our stay. There was an electrical outlet hanging out of the wall in the kitchen. The linens on the king-size bed were old and covered in "pills." We like a little noise from our ceiling fan, but the ceiling fan in the master bedroom is way too noisy and moves around a lot. You are much closer to the road and train tracks than you might think from the pictures provided. We were hoping to escape the sound of traffic, but you can easily hear the cars on the main road through Marathon. Of course, there is not a constant string of cars, but it was more traffic than we wanted to hear. Trains go through town several times each day and the whistle is loud enough to make you jump. We enjoyed watching a storm build across the mountains during our visit but when it got to us, we lost both electric and water utilities. When the sun went down, it got dark--the "can't see your hand in front of face" kind of dark. We searched for flashlights, candles, battery-powered lantern, or anything else to help us light our way but found nothing. A quick call to the caretaker confirmed that there were no supplies available to guests during a power loss. Fortunately, we had a small flashlight in our car. We let the owners know about our disappointment in the property and hope they make some changes before your visit.
Were a young family of 6 and it was a perfect place for the kids to explore and for my husband and I to sit back and enjoy the view of Gods creation. The house had everything we needed. We are so glad we visited Casa La Vista while exploring Big Bend National Park!
The house is exactly as described and reviewed. It's not the Ritz, but give me a break - you're in the middle of nowhere, which is exactly the point. My family of 4 (including a 3 year and 1 year old) had a ball. There is a long covered porch for soaking in the views. There is a little pond with turtles in it (there probably isn't water in it always, but it was full when we were there). The beds are comfortable. The house is relatively clean all things considered. Lots of windows. There is a serviceable kitchen, but you are on vacation and the Gage Hotel down the street has one of the best restaurants in Texas - no exaggeration! Do yourself a favor a go spend a couple of days in Marathon. It's delightful.
I do recommend this place for families - like I said, our family had a great time. Our 3 year old loved everything about it - especially the fact that from the porch you can see the freight trains passing through town. But it does pay to be vigilant. It's West Texas, so there are spiders, scorpions and snakes. There are also a bunch a happy, floppy eared rabbits running around.
Fun place. Beautiful views and comfortable accommodations.
My family and I stayed here last weekend and had a wonderful time! The house was perfect for our family of four. Comfortable beds, fully outfitted kitchen, tv and wifi. Even our dog loved chasing around the jack rabbit (never getting close of course). Big Bend was amazing. We had a great meal of rabbit and deer at the 12 Gage Hotel. Can't wait to come back.......maybe when the weather cools down ;)
