The owners, an architect and artist, built this modern home over time on a hidden lot, conveniently located down a private lane just four blocks from Saint Helena’s Main Street. It sleeps a maximum of 8 guests with 3 baths.This has been our family home for 18 years. The interaction between the architecture and landscape design creates a relaxed California indoor/outdoor living experience.

The house features stained-concrete floors, galvanized metal finishes, stucco, rustic wood beams, re-purposed barn doors & windows, and antique light fixtures.

Furnishings include one-of-a-kind finds, such as the beautifully restored bamboo living room set, as well as pieces that have been passed down through several generations.

The living room has a flat screen TV ("basis channels") with DVD/Blu-ray, a wood burning fireplace, 9' tall French doors, a beautiful chandelier and a grand piano. A separate dining room is adjacent to the cook's galley kitchen, which is outfitted with a wide range of utensils and kitchenware as well as a Thermadore gas range and hood, Sub- Zero refrigerator/freezer and a dishwasher. The first-floor bedroom has an eastern king sized bed in a French-sleigh frame and adjacent bath. This floor also has a laundry room with a washer and dryer.

The vaulted-ceiling second floor master bedroom has a cal king bed and ceiling fan and new plush carpet. Wake up to morning birdsong and sun light pouring through an antique window with wavy glass panes and an old key hole from its’ former life as a door. There is also a bath and secluded deck. Additionally, there is an open loft that shares the second floor with the master bedroom. The loft has new wool carpet, curtains for privacy and an American 1850's antique four poster double bed.

The separate cottage with a its' own separate entrance has a queen bed and compact bath with tile shower and is a short walk via a covered patio to the main house kitchen side door entrance.

All beds have feather comforters and pillows. The four bed sizes are eastern king, cal king, queen and a double.

The main portion of the house is air-conditioned, with the exception of the living room addition, designed to be cooled by natural ventilation through 9 foot high French doors with pocket copper screen doors. The cottage has an efficient and quiet Rinnai heater and ceiling fan (no air conditioning). There is Wi-Fi throughout.

Outdoor spaces include a sunny front yard behind a privacy creating waxy-privet hedge. There is a casual, partially covered outdoor dining area with charcoal barbecue. This space is easily accessible from the kitchen and cottage. The living room views a heritage English walnut tree which shades the terraced area inviting you to relax on lounge chairs outdoors. A third, sunny outdoor patio area provides another table with umbrella and lounge chairs.

In summary, with six people, each two-some will have a bedroom on a separate floor or the cottage with adjacent baths. Eight guests can be accommodated by using the 4th bed, located in the loft if complete privacy is not a concern, and there is a willingness to get cozy around the dining room table. The loft opens off the stairway to the second floor, however curtains can be drawn to provide visual privacy. The eight guest option offers a very economical solution when considering the typical cost of 4 hotel rooms in the Napa Valley.

Eighteen years ago we came across a 150-year-old vacant lot hidden in the middle of a residential block in Saint Helena. We jumped at the chance to live there, and designed and built this contemporary home with a nod to the iconic western storefront with metal roofs and siding one sees around town.

Byron purchased this house in 1998

Location and privacy. Walk to vineyards, specialty food and wine stores, bakery & coffee shops, farmers market, playgrounds, great restaurants, cinema, luxury shopping, tennis & bocce courts and a health spa with a pool.

Property was great. Clean and well kept.

Our only complaint, there is one towel and one wash cloth per person for 3 days. No extras, no laundry soap to wash them. Everything else was great. We would probably stay there again.

Stayed here for our Napa wedding. 7 adults fit comfortably.

My now wife, her family+significant others and I stayed at this location for my wedding. In total, it was three couples and my mother-in-law for five nights. The rooms were spacious enough. The loft area was larger than originally thought and more private than described (you can't see it from the ground floor). The cottage is nice and private. The kitchen is a little cramped but we weren't hosting dinner parties. The location is close to a grocery store and several restaurants; we walked to dinner most nights. It's down a private lane so there is privacy and no noticeable street noise.

The night before our wedding, the fridge flooded the kitchen. I was able to easily reach Byron who guided me to the water shut off valve. That was unavoidable and I don't fault them. The positive was that communication was easy and quick.

A few suggestions:

A motion sensor light near the cottage or a way to unlock the cottage door nearest the kitchen. The property gets very dark at night and we had to escort my MIL back to the cottage since the closest door from the kitchen is unable to be unlocked from the outside. I also think that is why the outside bulbs were all burnt out. Prior guests probably kept it on all the time. There was a spare bulb in the laundry room that I installed but we did not want to leave the light on all evening.

The doors are all unlocked by a punch code. I hope this is changed after every guest. Although very convenient, we did not feel very safe leaving all of our wedding cash and gifts in the house. If the code is changed after each guest, it would be nice to note that in the house rules for piece of mind.

Please wipe down the outside chairs and loungers before guests arrive. Had to wipe down the patio chairs. The loungers had some bird poo on them.

The house rules stated no smoking or we would lose the deposit. We weren't sure if that meant no smoking on property. I would loved to have celebrated my wedding with the friends who traveled with a nice cigar. There is a bbq grill outside. I don't see much difference.

Privacy curtain in the living room. At night, outside can see everything inside.

These are small things compared to the wonderul time we had. I'd still give it 4.5 stars. That's not possible so I rounded up.

Another positive: we accidentally left a pair of shoes behind and they were kind enough to mail it back to us in Hawaii.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your very detailed and generally positive review. A few statements need to be clarified. 1. When you called about the Sub-Zero refrigerator/freezer flooding we assumed a catastrophic failure and appreciated your willingness to turn off the water supply to the ice maker until we could get a repair technician. He determined the problem resulted from leaving the freezer drawer open for an extended period of time. We have installed a note reminding future guests to close the drawer. Since there was no lasting damage, your entire damage deposit was refunded. 2. By definition, a vacation rental does not have full time staff. Birds fly over, leaves fall, nature happens in outdoor spaces between the time the cleaning and yard crews are on site and the next guests arrive. 3. We do have beautiful living room curtains which we hang seasonally during the winter. During the summer months with long daylight hours (when you were here), we find guests generally enjoy the unimpeded view of the backyard landscaping which has been designed to provide complete visual privacy from adjacent neighbors.

Very comfortable and well appointed home

It was perfect for three couples who liked a bit of privacy since we each had our own bathroom. Lovely outdoor areas to enjoy as well - there were three areas where one could "hang out" and enjoy the garden and weather.

Beautiful home nestled in the middle of St. Helena

Overall - great experience. The home was very comfortable and as advertised. It was centrally located - easy access to all of Napa. The kitchen was well appointed, and the living areas were very comfortable and well maintained. The outdoor area was a wonderful spot for an afternoon glass of wine or snack. Would definitely recommend this if you are looking for a nice spot to stay during a visit to Napa.

Had a wonderful stay at this property

We had 4 couples at the Napa Valley Hideaway and it was a wonderful stay.

The house is adorable and the location was perfect for our group. We were able to take morning strolls / jogs through a great neighborhood, walk to the grocery store and nearby restaurants / shops, and enjoy breakfast on the patio with our group every morning. There are A LOT of wineries and restaurants within a 10-15 minute drive.

Highly recommend this place for both a group of adults and/or families.

We will definitely consider this the next time we are in town.

The property was very nice and well kept. The rooms and beds were comfortable.

6 of us stayed here for three nights over the Thanksgiving holiday. The house is a 5 minute walk to downtown St. Helena and is in a lovely neighborhood. We enjoyed the restaurants in the downtown area and were very close to all of the wine tasting the valley had to offer. I would stay here again when our family decides to go back to wine country.
