About Steve Reed

My name is Stephen Reed. I manage Sachem Corner on behalf of my cousins and their parents.

I have been coming to Nantucket since I was one and lived on Nantucket from 88 through 91. I still have numerous ties to Island and make it down for at least two weeks every summer.

Why Steve Reed chose Nantucket

Sachem Corner has been in our family since it was built by my great grandfather in 1934. In the late 80s I spent considerable time at Sachem. During that time I added the gardens and laid the back patio. I have a tremendous attachment to Sachem Corner and hope you will as well.

What makes this cottage unique

When you visit Sachem it is easy to imagine what summering in Nantucket must have been like in the 30s. Sachem Corner is on secluded dirt road. The many large original windows have great light and let in a lot of fresh air. The widows walk is a delight for children.

Quaint and Homey

  • 4 of 5

This was our first visit to Nantucket and we loved it. Sachem was a wonderful surprise and better than the photos reveal. Was very clean and all of our needs were met with what was available on the property. Location was convenient to downtown and also to the beaches we discovered and became our favorites. We traveled with our grandson and his fiance and they stayed in the house and we stayed in the guesthouse. The stairs were too much for us in the main house. The beds were comfortable which was a relief for someone with back problems. The brick walk to the guesthouse was being worked on when we arrived. Would suggest another small step be installed at the guesthouse. The first step is too high and was problematic getting in and out. Would also suggest another mirror in the guesthouse as the one above the sink in the bathroom is very small. A heater there would be useful also. Other than those small suggestions, we were very satisfied and had a wonderful time. Thanks to the Reed family for making vacation 2017 a comfortable and enjoyable one. 2018 is on the drawing board and will probably be a return to Nantucket and Sachem.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the good review and for taking wonder care of Sachem Corner. I also appreciate the recommendations on how to improve the guest house. I will look at each of these. I apologize again for the landscaping work occurring when you arrived. I asked my landscapers to repair the walk way this fall but they missed that detail. I do hope it was not too much of an inconvenience. We would love to have you back again next year. Please book early as slots are filling up already. Thanks Steve Reed

Perfect Balance of Convenience and Privacy

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying here. We actually walked to and from town multiple times, as well as to Jetties Beach area. The rental is only steps away from steps beach, which in itself is absolutely stunning. The widows walk provides a beautiful view, we went up a couple times each day. The house was well appointed with everything you would need. Perfect patio area for a cookout- hard to decide between a quiet night in vs. a night out downtown because it was such a comfortable and relaxing place. The guest house was great too, and honestly it is all we would ever need on the island! We would rent this place again in a heart beat.

Honeymoon Bliss

  • 5 of 5

My Husband and I spent a week of our honeymoon at this lovely cottage. We loved the location of this house, it was close to town and to the beach but very private and quiet. There is access to stairs that go down to the beach just one street over and because parking isn't permitted on that road there was hardly anyone at the beach. Swimming was fantastic, warm water and gentle waves. We loved watching the sunsets every night from the widow's walk while enjoying a glass of wine and some appy's. The view from the widow's walk is spectacular, one of the best things about this property. The cottage was really clean and everything was in well working order. We loved the historic feel of the home including the clawfoot tub upstairs and all the cool artwork and furniture throughout the house. The kitchen table was great for working on puzzles on cloudy days, the chairs were so comfy and unique. We also appreciated the abundance of towels, the awesome outdoor shower, and the backyard, and bikes. Steve was easy to correspond with and our deposit was returned shortly after our departure. We can't wait to return to this lovely cottage!

Fantastic Location

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at Sachem Corner for the last week in August until just before Labor Day. The house could not have been in a better location. A 2 min walk to the secluded, almost private beach and a 5-10 min drive into town or a 15-20 min bike ride to town. The outdoor patio/furniture and the spacious yard were great to have as well.

As for the house itself, it is definitely older and Cape-y, however, we were so surprised at how clean and well maintained it was. No cobwebs, no bugs, all the dishes, silverware and pots/pans were very clean. The one suggestion I made was to update the upstairs bathroom/shower, which seems to be on the to-do list but not for a little while out. The claw foot tub is quaint, but it is a little inconvenient/uncomfortable to use. However, the outdoor shower was perfect and very clean and enjoyable to use, so we just mainly used that instead.

It was also really nice to have bikes provided at the house, since the bike trail is right down the road and the house is bike-able to many things. Some of us even biked to the Cisco Brewery just fine.

I would definitely recommend this house to anyone who values a great location/experience more than luxurious accommodations. We are working on getting back for next summer!

The Perfect Stay!

  • 5 of 5

This wonderful cottage is tucked away so it's private, yet it's very convenient to town. The private beach is just around the corner and absolutely gorgeous, never thought of really going anywhere else. The property is well stocked with bikes and beach chairs etc. (in good condition I might ad). It is relaxed and perfect for a couple with further possibilities because of the separate guest cottage. The owners were a delight and made you realize they really care about their property that has been in the family for years. Favorite room in the house is the new kitchen. Great feel, wood floors, runs right into the dining room and just a great place for everyone to hang out. The one thing that struck me was how clean the house was. Not a cobweb inside or out, no dust bunnies, nothing. I've rented alot of places on the Island and somehow these things have become part of the "charm". I would highly recommend this place if you can find any available spots. I think that I took the last two available weeks. It's usually rented out for the season for a very good reason.
