About the property

Fully Equipped Cabin, 2 floors, 1 Bedroom + Additional sleep. areas, (Sleeps 6)

This cabin and its sister homes, Casa Inspiracion, Rancho el Rio and their newest addition, La Granja, fund all the animal welfare, environmental and social welfare programs their owners run at the Sustainability Demonstration Center depicted in this video

The Center is located along the main route to Monteverde and right now there is a SPECIAL PROMOTION: FREE TOUR of an animal sanctuary, the historic Sustainability Demonstration Center, an Organic Farm, and the surrounding tropical paradise of forest & river! Other special ADVENTURE, CULTURAL, SPANISH LANGUAGE, RURAL, AND NATURAL EXCURSION packages for a unique Costa Rican experience with DISCOUNTS available! Contact us for more details.

Bird-watcher´s paradise. Enjoy the million-dollar view of the Gulf of Nicoya and the mountains from this two-story new cabin in a secluded 5-acre preserve with lots of fruit trees (tangerines, oranges, water apples, grapefruits, bananas, avocado, rose apples, lemons), over 30 medicinal plants, and more-

Casa Cielo is only 15 minutes from Monteverde, 7 mins from Santa Elena.

Situated right off the main road to San Jose (route 606), but nestled in the mountains, it is a 5 minute drive to grocery stores, banks, restaurants, etc.

Enjoy the Cloud Forest attractions during the day, but at night, retreat to the low-land drier and warmer climate and its diverse wildlife.

Wake up to the sound of parrots flying overhead and blue magpies knocking at your window, then warm up with a cup of herbal tea straight from our garden or organic coffee from the San Luis Valley. We provide you with free organic coffee for the first morning of your stay as we are coffee producers in Monteverde and want to make sure you have an awesome start to your first morning with us! If you want to purchase more organic coffee for your stay or to take home, you can order it through our food order form.

Later on, take a walk on the trails and see beauty and biodiversity all around... you could even feed the chickens and fish.

In the evening, watch the amazing sunset from the balcony and curl up in a tub for two.

Less than 2 hours to the beach, 3.5 hours to Volcan Arenal, 30 mins to Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and zip-lines, 20 mins to Children´s Eternal Rain Forest, 7 minutes to ranarium, herpetarium, horse-back rides, orchid and butterfly gardens.

The cabin is fully equipped. The first floor features the kitchen with large picture windows overlooking the mountains and ocean. There is a living area, a desk, a washer and a full bathroom. The second floor has a comfortable double bed, a balcony also overlooking the ocean, a romantic bathtub for two, a sofa and coffee table and some storage space. A ladder takes you to an additional sleeping area for a teenager or adult (too dangerous for a small child).

There is wi-fi/internet free of charge. You also have your own phone line with free calls within Costa Rica.

Email us for daily, weekly or monthly rates. We also offer RURAL TOURS.

About veronica sheehan

Alexander was born in the San Luis Valley in the Monteverde region and has lived all his life here. He started working when he was 11 years old helping his father herd oxen to take milk to the local cheese factory. At the age of 15, he began working for the Children´s Eternal Rain Forest, then he worked for InBio (Instituto Nacional de Biodiversidad) researching snails all over Costa Rica, he then worked for ProNativas, an non-profit organization that promotes the use of native ornamental plants as a conservation effort. He believes in changing the world one person at a time, starting with ourselves.

Veronica was born in Mexico and spent 25 years in the States. She worked as a biologist, then as a licensed clinical social worker in various settings including private practice with people suffering from chronic physical illnesses and hospice care. She arrived in Monteverde a few years ago with her 5 year old son, Stuart. She founded PAWS costarica (Promotion of Animal Wellbeing Society), a non-profit organization to help educate people regarding the responsible and compassionate treatment of animals. She believes, like Alex, in changing the world from the inside (OUR inside) out. Everything we do, our choices and lifestyles sum up to our current state of affairs… we have the power to choose again so we can heal ourselves, our planet and all living beings.

Their work with their ecotourism business, their Sustainability Demonstration Center, and rural communities helps visitors understand the intimate connection that we have to the land. The entire community gets to benefit from the tourism that comes to this very rural area and get to share their own wisdom. Everyone wins.

Stuart is 12 years old and attends the public school in Guacimal. He shares our family dream of enjoying the simple things and having lots of fun playing soccer and bird-watching.

Our dream is to achieve sustainability in harmony with nature

veronica sheehan purchased this cabin in 2005

Why veronica sheehan chose Monteverde

22 years ago, Alexander bought this land. It had been used for cattle and was pretty devoid of tress. He wanted to reforest it and turn it into a safe haven for birds and animals. He built the cabin 6 years ago. It is now a 5 acre paradise!

What makes this cabin unique

We love the peace and quiet, the sounds of the parrots flying overhead, and of the birds on the trees. We like having lots of space to roam and to plant things. Our animals are happy here too and we enjoy seeing them free and happy. We enjoy eating what we grow. We feel in harmony with nature. We are close to everything, but when we are home we have our privacy and space. There is enough peace that you can relax, renew and reconnect. Being here reminds one of who we truly are and why we are here.

Perfect for the Adventurer

  • 5 of 5

Casa Cielo was the perfect location for our family of four looking for our adventure in Costa Rica. Close to Santa Elena for grocery, a restaurant meal or some souvenirs. The location gave us close access to Selvatura Adventure Park for an amazing Zip Line experience, a tour of the Cloud Forest guided by Veronica's brother in law Greivin, horseback riding to the hot springs, the Don Juan Coffee Tour and of course the Sustainability Demonstration Centre. Veronica, Carol, Alex and Stuart were gracious and very welcoming hosts and travel agents giving us detailed advice and recommendations to everything we wanted to do. Be sure to spend some time at the centre to learn all the amazing things this family is doing for the community and the environment. The Saturday market across from the centre is also a great community event to experience traditional food, music and culture. The cabin offered spectacular views and opportunities daily to view wildlife up close. Be sure to take up the offer of Giselle's home cooking. The taste of Costa Rica direct to your dining table. Thank you to Jose also for bringing us to the river for a fantastic private swim in the river.

Owner's Response: It was wonderful having this family with us for the entire week... Often, guests who have very short stays have to choose between one activity or another and must stay within the sights close to Monteverde. This family was able to it all> Monteverde sights and make day trips to the amazing Cortez Waterfall, the Guacimal river, and the beach where all the monkeys are. We were thrilled they came to support the locals on the outskirts of Monteverde where we hold the public market every Saturday... and got to meet our brand new baby donkey, Caroline. It is this kind of family that gives us hope for the world... traveling responsibly and making choices that are good for everyone.

We (couple, mid-late 20's) stayed at Casa Cielo for 2 nights and wish we had stayed longer! We stopped at the Sustainability Demonstration Centre on the way up - a must see! Veronica was such a warm and welcoming host, and was extremely helpful with booking tours and making recommendations for things to do during our stay. Our tour of the Sustainability Centre with Stuart was one of the highlights of our whole trip to Costa Rica! We had dinner made for us by Giselle one evening - delicious. Will be recommending this place to all of our friends and family - the views are unbelievable and it was so nice to "get away" in this private home (while still being very close to Saint-Elena!). For those renting a car - recommend an SUV, particularly if driving to Selvatura Park or other local attractions in the Monteverde area. The "Rally Yaris" made it around okay, but something with a little bit more clearance would have made driving less stressful! Definitely want to come back - 2 days was not enough time to explore the area - and I would have loved to check out the farmers market on a Saturday!

Owner's Response: Yes, a car with good clearance is good. The road will soon resume the last phase of construction and be paved, but the last 14 km to the cabin are not paved yet. Grateful that people enjoy the cabin and the area so much, they want to stay longer

Beautiful view, secluded and supporting sustainable tourism!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 3 nights and wish we had stayed the entire 9 nights we had in CR. Veronica was extremely accommodating with the warmest welcome after our long drive. We chose this place after reading it benefited the Sustainable Demonstration Center, as well as offering local homemade food from the neighbor Giselle and her family, which was amazing!! We could have stayed at the house all day with the beautiful views watching birds and monkeys but we did explore the wonderful town of Santa Elena and Selvatura Reserve. We have recommended this wonderful place to many friends and hope we can return again someday. It fills me with excitement to revisit this listing with the wonderful experience and memories it provided us. Thank you Veronica and family :)

Owner's Response: The house indeed is a safe haven that lends itself for expansion of the self ... the beauty of the view and the surrounding mountains and birds makes it hard to pull away from it. We are grateful for the people that take the time to try and describe this un-describable feeling of peace and awe.

Owner's Response: We are so grateful people take the time to write a note about their experience. It is so true that you are close to everything, yet far enough to not feel like you are in the crowded and loud Monteverde-Santa Elena area. The views can be watched in peace as you watch the sun-sets from your balcony and enjoy a home-delivered meal from a nearby neighbor. Everyone wins. Our guests love their experience and they help us help the world too, as all cabin income goes to fund the programs at the Sustainability Demonstration Center.

Secluded, peaceful, and magical stay!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Casa Cielo for 2 nights--it was not enough time! Perched on a hillside with a magnificent view toward the gulf, this cabin feels like it's in it's own world. It's a unique location and a really special place--do yourself a favor and book a stay here!

On our way up, we stopped by the Sustainability Demonstration Center to meet Veronica, and would strongly encourage everyone to do the same--she's so wonderful and they're doing great work there! We also got to visit the farmers market across the street which was lovely. When we arrived at Casa Cielo, Giselle met us, showed us around, and provided delicious, farm-fresh, homemade refreshments! The cabin has everything you need, and is comfy and cozy. We had some dog and cat visitors, strays or neighbors but all very friendly, so that's a bonus if you love animals! The location is very convenient if you want to visit the cloud forest, and Veronica's recommendation/help with reservations at Selvatura Park was very valuable.

Can't say enough good things about this special place, and can't wait to go back! Very highly recommended!

Cabin in the sky

  • 4 of 5

We picked up the keys from Veronica at the Sustainability Demonstration Center, where she is doing so much good work for the environment and the local community. In fact the rental cost of the cabin goes directly to supporting the center. If you have time to let her show you around the center and explain the work she is doing, you wont be disappointed. The view from the cabin on the side of the hill are so expansive and the number of birds to see is incredible. Giselle's cooking is excellent and a great opportunity to take an evening away from domestic chores, support the local community and enjoy fresh ingredients and a home cooked meal delivered right to your kitchen table. 700 meters up the road is Finca Lindora where you must take the opportunity for only $35 to horseback ride through the hills to a private paradise of two natural rock pools built to capture hot spring water coming out of the hill and adjacent to a gushing stream of cold water. There's even a stone changing room. It was amazing, and totally private - just my husband and I and our 9-year old daughter. Horses are rock steady so no concerns for non-riders. We would definitely recommend for those wanting to get away from it all but yet be only a 10 minute drive to town (Santa Elena/Monteverde).

Owner's Response: I wanted to add that indeed the hot springs the reviewer speaks about will be one of the highlights of your trip to Monteverde and they are only one minute's drive from the house.
