I am from Ireland and live in the US. I have been lucky now to own this house fro several years, adding to it and changing it each year that I am there. I wanted my children to have a chance to learn what it is like to grow up in europe as I did. They have really had some great experiences and have gotten to share them with their friends as well. We always seem to have a houseful when we are lucky enough to get home. And in the meantime it is there waiting for you to make your own memories too!
Margaret Ohalloran purchased this townhome in 2009
I fell in love with this wonderful, graceful home the first time that I saw it. I think that had a lot to do with the garden, the views, the light,my wonderful neighbors. The ease of getting there, the feeling of safety, the sense of being home.It took me a long time to buy it, nearly 2 years as I was nervous as a single mum buying a house in another country and trying to make it all work at a distance. But I needn't have worried at all. It has been great, even with any hiccups along the way, it was a wonderful decision that I am truly glad that I made
This summer will be our sixth family vacation there and it has created a wonderful time together with family and friends; to catch up on rest and relaxation, to forget about CNN and the world news, and to simply learn to breath again. Last summer we traveled ten minutes to Ledorat for a market that starts at night every wonderful food that you can imagine, incredibly fresh, cooked to order, washed down with fresh juice or wonderful wine. All out in the open air, with music and dancing, children and laughter. We are planning to go every time it is on this summer. Montmorillon is what you make it. It can be where you rest and relax or where you recoup after hiking or biking, or where you listen to music under the stars. For me and my family it is a magical place. I can only hope that it is for you too.
It's hard to convey the true beauty of this quaint, historic, French town.
It is also difficult to put into words the joy that awaits behind the weathered, front doors of this fabulous property.
The house is full of light, history and French charm, with the lounge and kitchen enjoying views over both the river and the old town.
I especially loved cooking in the fully fitted kitchen and looking out of the window across the roofs to the spire of the church that dominates the skyline.
Take an early morning stroll into town, it's literally on your doorstep.
Pick up some crusty, french bread and fresh croissant for breakfast. There's a wonderful, artisan bakers within easy walking distance. You will be greeted with a friendly 'bonjour' by the owners and if you're lucky the bread will still be warm from the oven!
Back at the house, pour yourself a fresh coffee and enjoy your 'petit déjeuner', under the pergola, overlooking the river. I wish I was there right now!
The combination of this pretty French town and this house is truly enchanting.
Whether you choose to visit Montmorillon for a relaxing holiday or to explore the local area this 'maison française' is perfect!
My family and I have rented this property twice and loved the place so much that we've bought a house on the edge of town. Is there a higher recommendation?
Book your holiday here and maybe we'll meet in La Cité de l’Écrit browsing through the book shops. Perhaps I'll see you in De La Trappe Aux Livre, the Belgian beer bar or maybe we'll chat over a coffee, in a cafe in the town square.
I might even tell you about the adventure we had on our last morning in Montmorillon!
This is my second time to stay at La Terrasse and it was even better this time around. There is a new spacious sit-in kitchen that I would really love to have in my own home. Everything you could need is here! The garden has come on beautifully too with a choice of places to sit or stretch out or have an aperitif or meal. As it was a bit later in the year we chose to have our lunches on the terrace overlooking the river and our dinners in the kitchen. It was the most relaxing few days of this year and we came back from Montmorillon feeling totally recharged. A great place for a holiday. We`ll be back!
I just returned from a wonderful trip to Montmorillon! The place we stayed in on the river was wonderful. It has a *lovely* garden with great views of a beautiful river. I sat outside for hours and hours. The house itself is so charming and unique. Every nook and cranny had character. I just kept pinching myself because the place just oozes with charm. There is a brand new kitchen- which was quite nice and sophisticated. The town is quaint. The area is filled with so much fun and interesting things to do. One of the highlights of my visit was a "girls" luncheon in St Savin which is less than 20 minutes away. We had a fabulous lunch at a restaurant called Pattison. To die for food. I want to retire here.
I recently returned to Montmorillon and stayed at this beautiful property. The gardens are lovely; the river is wonderful - I just can't say enough good about it. I really like the area and especially the town. It is ideal for walking to various eateries and shops. Several bridges cross the river and old churches are within easy walking distance. I rented a bike and rode to the Chateau Pruniers - what a beautiful place - it would be great place for a wedding.
The house itself is also special. It has all the modern conveniences yet retains the charm of the region. I can't wait to return!
Open the door, take a breath and...be enchanted.
Montmorillon 'Cite de l'Ecrit' is a charming medieval town nestled in the Poitou-Charentes region, known for it's books and macarons. The traditional recipe for Montmorillon macarons remains unchanged in 150 years, I know this because I visited the Maison Rannou-Metivier, macaroon museum and bakery, and enjoyed many macarons over the course of our stay in Montmorillon.
It is picture postcard France, in fact Margaret's house is featured on a postcard. Sitting right on the river, the photographs can not begin to portray the magical feeling one experiences walking into this blissful environment. Automatic de stressing, relaxation, joy, a sense of fun and adventure with undertones of magic and romance.
The house is warm, inviting and charming, with all the modern conveniences anyone could possibly need. Spectacular vistas and light, a great space to retreat to, or enjoy the company of many friends, and believe me if you visit Montmorillon you will make friends, for it hosts the most beautiful tapestry of people who are as welcoming and enchanting as the town itself.
Something for everyone - hiking, biking, kayaking, riding, amazing restaurants, historical sites, and everywhere there are 'stories' , while all the time one feels that they have just stepped back somewhere in time. No wonder this haven is so difficult to leave, can't wait to return next year.
Thank you Margaret.
My husband and myself love old European antiquity so we decided on smaller towns in France to visit and one of which was Montmorilion. As we drove into town on Bastille Day this past July and were pleasantly surprised to see that Montmorillon has still maintained its old French charm. We found Margaret's house easily within steps away from the town square. A young French gentleman had awaited our arrival and gave us a tour of the property and filled us in on interesting sights to see in the town.
The house was bright, airy and clean and boasted a new kitchen with the latest modcons, alongside a large dining table. Also included was a comfortable sitting room with TV and free WIFI and upstairs were three spacious bedrooms and bathroom.
We had picked the perfect spot on a river front where within 6 hours of our arrival we had the best Bastille Day fireworks view right in our backyard. The backyard is large with a Gazebo trellis of summer flowers, an alcove with patio dining table and chairs and plenty of sunning spots for sun-seekers. Also, in the patio area there is a 16 century turret, but as yet unfinished.
So much to see and view from this spacious house and/or while leisurely strolling around town absorbing history in this old historical town.
Definitely on our bucket list to return again.
Montmorillon is known as La Cité de l'Ecrit et des Métiers du Livre due to it's history as a center for books and literature. Today there are oodles of book stores and artists galleries showcasing their work and even providing workshops for free so that young and old alike can get to learn something new on their trip. My daughters and I all learned how to watercolor on our first trip and now have our paintings as a wonderful souvenir.
There are small restaurants and bars promising every type of beer and food under the sun, and great walks to finish up your evenings and make room for more feasting to come.
For the more adventuresome, there is kayaking for kids and parents alike at 'Lathus' or perhaps horse riding, or a trip to real farm that allows both little and big people to get up-close and personal with cows, goats, ducks, chickens, and the farm way of life. A little further down the road is a favorite restaurant of mine, and is just as perfect for a family-friendly meal as it is for a romantic escape. And they will accommodate even the finickiest of the eaters as I know from personal experience; my ten-year-old who hates everything and my fifteen-year-old vegetarian and even I, who enjoys a slightly more sophisticated repast, were all in food heaven, while tucked in a wonderful, wooded glade with the river wandering by.
Or perhaps you would enjoy a picnic laid out in the gardens of the 'Chateau DeTouffou', owned and restored by the Ogilvie family, after your personal tour of the chateau. Follow it up by the wander through the medieval town, of 'Chatellerault' and if you still have energy in need of burning, you could see the eagle spectacle found at the center of town in 'Chauvigny'. Or perhaps shopping is on your mind. If so, there is the Limoges seconds outlet where you can pick up simply white dishes for less than a euro and gorgeous platters and serving vessels for a couple euros more. And for the French lingerie lovers, there is the 'Aubade' factory outlet in 'St Savin'. There you can mix a moment at the monastery with their superb frescos (a unesco heritage site) with a moment of lingerie shopping with a fitter so good all she has to do is look at you and she instantly knows what will fit you and what will make you look your best. Or perhaps 'Poitiers' is more your style where you can get a taste of Parisian fashion all with the ease of a small town, alongside a myriad of churches, art galleries, restaurants and one of the largest universities in France. All within a half hour drive from Montmorillon
Kir Royale, anyone? One of my favorite indulgences in the late afternoon is to head to the Terrasse in Montmorillon with new and old friends, where you can enjoy conversation or music or just watch the river slide by. Or perhaps head to 'the Lucullus restaurant' famed for its cuisine and have a superb French dinner without the Parisian prices. And don’t forget the macaroon factory that has delicacies to eat now and treats to bring home., all just steps from your home.
For the hikers, fishers, and bicyclists, there are trails, fish, and paths galore to keep you fit and active to burn off at least a few of those calories you will enjoy consuming. Before you tuck yourself onto the train or into your car to leave your little slice of paradise, make sure you head to my favorite bakery and have an almost indecent chocolate mousse; it tastes so good it will actually seduce your taste buds and hopefully tempt you into making a return visit so you can enjoy even more rest and relaxation and more undiscovered spots waiting to be discovered.
