Built in 1896, this home retains all its historic charm yet has been brought up to date with an open concept main level and 21st century appliances. The location simply could not be better, as the home is on a quiet side street yet within a short walk of everything. It is only steps from a concentration of restaurants known as Restaurant Row, with tables out front by the sidewalk. Stanton Park, which is ideal for small children, is one block away. Union Station, from which virtually every sightseeing tour in Washington departs, is three blocks away, as are the Senate buildings, and immediately beyond them is the National Mall with major sights such as the Smithsonian museums and the National Archives.
Less than five blocks away:
- US Capitol
- US Supreme Court
- Library of Congress
- Folger Shakespeare Library
- Belmont-Paul Women's Equality museum
- Union Station
Within 1.5 miles:
- Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum
- Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History
- National Gallery of Art
- Smithsonian American Art Museum
- National Museum of the American Indian
- Hirshorn Museum (modern art)
- National Archives
- Verizon Center (Washington Wizards NBA team)
- Madam Tussaud's
- International Spy Museum
- US Botanical Garden
- National Building Museum
The home has been furnished for a family of four, but also has an optional twin-size and normal height inflatable bed for a fifth person. There is a crib, high chair, and stair gate for baby. It is ideal for a family with children who would like to visit sites such as the Smithsonian museums, the US Capitol, Supreme Court, National Archives, the Library of Congress, or the Newseum, among many others. Our neighborhood, Capitol Hill, is quiet yet so centrally located that the sites are within walking distance, a huge plus since none of them has parking. You will live like a local, walking one block to the grocery store with the house shopping cart, or getting around on DC's bright red public bicycles, which you can pick up at a bike rack close to the house.
Your rental includes a free permit for street parking. However, due to our proximity to the major tourist attractions we recommend not renting a car. We are walking distance to Metro and to most of the major attractions. Should you need a rental vehicle for a day to visit out-of-town sites, there are rental car offices minutes from the house.
Although we are steps from Restaurant Row, you will find the house equipped with a cook's kitchen. Whether it is a coffee grinder, a blender for margaritas, or a selection of spices, you will find it on hand.
Your rental comes with all linens, towels, a blow drier, a starter set of toiletries, etc. All you need to bring is a tooth brush!

My wife and I are both management consultants who have traveled widely for decades, and have developed a strong sense of what we like in a locale and in accommodations. We actively manage our vacation rentals as a future retirement plan, but we select and prepare them by asking a simple test question -- would we be happy to live in them ourselves?
Alec Smyth purchased this townhome in 2012
There is a lot to see in Washington, with over fifty museums, but unfortunately we feature the very longest commutes in the nation. The museums have no parking, which may be a deliberate strategy to reduce the number of cars. Capitol Hill is the area immediately surrounding the US Capitol, and because it is a historical conservation neighborhood of small houses that cannot be altered, it contains almost no hotels. By staying at a home on the Western edge of Capitol Hill, you are closer to the sites than at a hotel, and free from the hassles of commuting because everything is within walking distance. Quite aside from the convenience of the location, both house and neighborhood are charming.
The house is the perfect place to stay in DC. It is close to most of "the sights" and there are wonderful restaurants around the corner. You can literally park your car and see and do everything! In addition Alec is so easy to work with- quick to respond and very accommodating! We definitely recommend this property!
I stayed with my mom (75) and two daughters (21 and 23) for 3 nights in this amazing row house! The house is well stocked and super clean. It looks exactly like the pictures, decorated very tastefully! Very kid friendly with some board games and children's dishes and even a high chair. It is just a block or so from a local grocery so it is easy to stock up with what you might need for your stay. There are restaurants with in walking distance of the house (French, Mexican, Italian, German to name a few). Union Station is a few easy walking blocks away. It was very hot during our visit so we chose to use Uber, super easy to get picked up right from the front steps. One minor issue we had was with bunk beds, I forgot to request them to be separated to twin beds. The owner offered to come separate them but we made it work and didn't let it get in the way of our fun. I would not hesitate to recommend this house and would stay again on a future visit to DC.
This house was perfect for our family of four. It was one of the cleanest rentals that we have stayed in. The owner has thought of everything and it was very well stocked. The location was close to all of the museums and the neighborhood has several stores and restaurants nearby. Next time we are in Washington, we will definitely plan to stay here again!
Alec was flexible and helpful, and the place is very clean and in a great location. We felt at home away from home.
We cannot begin to express our joy over this rental unit! The property was exactly how it was described but somehow seemed to exceed our expectations. CLEAN! This is especially important to us since we have children with extreme allergies. Not a spec of dust or car hair in sight. The location is really wonderful since you don't have to get a taxi to the major landmarks. You are literally staying within short walk of the Capitol Building.
Now - the owners. They were completely respectful of our privacy but willing to help whenever needed. We had a little incident when something was broken. We were a little nervous in contacting the owner about this but they assured us that this was not a big deal at all. Incredible customer service!
I recommend this property to anyone we know and everyone we don't know.
P.S. - try the little "Italian Bistro" a few doors down. Delicious Food.
This is a great house for those needing to be close to Capitol Hill, The Mall, and public transportation. It is within walking distance of the Capitol and the Mall, and Union Station is nearby for tours and public transport. The house has plenty of room for a couple or small family and all the amenities you could need for an extended stay. There are lots of good restaurants within one to five blocks away. We enjoyed our stay very much.
The house is located on a quiet side street street only steps from Restaurant Row, a block of restaurants with tables right on the sidewalk, and one block from Stanton Park, which is ideal for small children. Union Station, the epicenter of tour excursions, is only three block from the house.
Capitol Hill is a historical conservation neighborhood of beautifully maintained, charming old houses. It has a small-town feel and a human scale, is cosmopolitan, and has a thriving cultural scene. The residential area closest to Washington's institutions, it is home to a large number of politicians and VIPs.
The Senate buildings are only three short blocks from the house, and beyond them is the National Mall with the principal tourist attractions of Washington.
