About Ruth Duncan
Ruth and Gerald Duncan We both are lifetime residents of this area. Ruth was a self employed Real Estate Appraiser with her own business located in Blacksburg for over 20 years. Her hobby now is Buck Lair Cabin. Gerald is a VT Hokie alumni. He is currently the Treasurer of Giles County , Virginia, an elected by the people position. He retired from the US Army civilian service as a custom software developer and designer. We take great pride in making Buck Lair much more than just a cabin. We also take great pride in making your experience at Buck Lair very special. It's not just a stay, it's creating a positive lifetime memory for the entire family when you rent Buck Lair.
Ruth Duncan purchased this Cabin in 2010
Why Ruth Duncan chose Newport
Near Blacksburg VA Much more than a cabin, a Retreat So relaxing and quiet and peaceful, listen to the streams. Giles County is a place filled with natural beauty, fresh waters, abundant wildlife and fish, hiking trails, canoe liverys, suited for the active and also for those wanting to be close to nature and enjoy peace and quiet time. Yet this is only 8 miles from the Virginia Tech campus and Blacksburg, the adjoining small quaint college town with unique shops and dining experiences. Just 8 miles 4-lane highway to VA Tech Campus( Football, basketball, track, swimming, softball, events too numerous to list). NOT A HOTEL - You are renting a complex not just a bed. Fully anointed house, large porches, small hiking area, picnic shelter, with tables, chairs, grills, fire pit, country swing
What makes this Cabin unique
All natural wood construction quality built including some oversized timbers. We love it here because of the quaintness of country and college atmospheres so intertwined yet with distance, a place to relax and enjoy and a place to be adventuresome whenever the mood strikes. The mountain streams flowing through the front yard is so unique and chatters to you so nicely.

Perfect family weekend
This was our third summer staying at Buck Lair! We always find it super clean, stocked with necessities and even extra treats. The setting is spectacular, close to town and great hiking trails. Our family of 5 truly loves this cabin in the woods, especially our 3 small nature loving kids! The porches and stream make it the perfect place for us to relax and get away. Easy access to VT and Blacksburg, but feels like another world. Gerald and Ruth are wonderful and have made this place a true gem!! It's adorable! Deserves 10 stars! So much better than any of the nearby hotels! We'll be back next year!!
We are very glad you found Buck Cabin to be so pleasing.
We hope you enjoyed your visit to our area again.
You'll have such a beautiful young family.
It was so enjoyable to see their excitement as they ventured forth exploring and investigating.
We trust you will consider Buck Lair again for a stay when you are in this area.
Again thank you for all.
A warm, welcoming, relaxing getaway
Buck's Lair is amazing. The house is better than the pictures and is generously stocked with the amenities of home ... like breakfast pastries and a quart of milk from local dairy. The creeks by the house were full with spring runoff and made for great sleeping with the windows open.
We used the gas grill and the fire pit. Everything was provided. We fed a family reunion one night and with 2 dining tables and 2 porches, there was room for everyone without even having to go down the hill.
Last but certainly not least, this house is a great value.
Very cozy and relaxing
We’ve stayed at Buck Lair several times and it never disappoints. Hope to be back soon!
Thank you again for your stay at Buck Lair while visiting this area. We especially like the respect you show our property - you are excellent guests and look we forward to your return.
The ambience of this property is amazing. The mountains, the woods and the brook are so tranquil.
We had a wonderful weekend sitting on the porch, listening to the brook, watching the sunset, and enjoying evenings with the warmth of the fireplace and the coziness of the cabin. It was a little too cold to hike, but we just enjoyed walking the paths around the property. We appreciated the hospitality given us by Ruth and Gerald and we look forward to visiting their lovely cabin sgain.
Thank you for a very nice review. We appreciate you letting others know you had such an enjoyable experience. We also appreciate you'll' as tenants. We rated you as 5 Star guests leaving all in very nice order upon your departure. We are looking forward to your return.
My family has stayed in this cabin quite a few times over the last few years. We enjoy long weekends in the mountains and have stayed in many places. No cabin we have ever rented compares to Buck Lair. It is simply perfect in every way...location, beauty, furnishings, cleanliness, comfort...I could go on. Ruth is such an amazing hostess, she adds so many little extras, you want for nothing but more time. There is also plenty to do in the area, just a few miles from the best college town in the U.S. (in my opinion).
Leah, thank you for such a gracious review.
We appreciate all the kind words. We so welcome you and your family to stay at Buck Lair. You'll leave everything in such a orderly, clean and neat condition. Again, we appreciate all. As a tenant, an absolute 5 STAR rating.
Our time at the cabin was too short!
Our schedule was so packed that we didn’t get to spend much time in the cabin. However, it was long enough that my wife wants one just like it with a babbling brook and all!
Kids were happy and cozy up in the loft...and with 3 teenagers who rarely agree on anything...that’s high praise.
I plan on encouraging my parents and my in-laws to stay here when they visit the Blacksburg area later this year.
Brad and family, thank you for the very nice review and for choosing Buck Lair for your recent stay in our area.
We welcome and look forward to your return
