Ruth and Gerald Duncan
We both are lifetime residents of this area. Ruth was a self employed Real Estate Appraiser with her own business located in Blacksburg for over 20 years. Her hobby now is Buck Lair Cabin. Gerald is a VT Hokie alumni. He is currently the Treasurer of Giles County , Virginia, an elected by the people position. He retired from the US Army civilian service as a custom software developer and designer. We take great pride in making Buck Lair much more than just a cabin. We also take great pride in making your experience at Buck Lair very special. It's not just a stay, it's creating a positive lifetime memory for the entire family when you rent Buck Lair.
Ruth Duncan purchased this cabin in 2010
Near Blacksburg VA Much more than a cabin, a Retreat So relaxing and quiet and peaceful, listen to the streams. Giles County is a place filled with natural beauty, fresh waters, abundant wildlife and fish, hiking trails, canoe liverys, suited for the active and also for those wanting to be close to nature and enjoy peace and quiet time. Yet this is only 8 miles from the Virginia Tech campus and Blacksburg, the adjoining small quaint college town with unique shops and dining experiences. Just 8 miles 4-lane highway to VA Tech Campus( Football, basketball, track, swimming, softball, events too numerous to list).
NOT A HOTEL - You are renting a complex not just a bed. Fully anointed house, large porches, small hiking area, picnic shelter, with tables, chairs grill, fire pit, country swing
All natural wood construction quality built including some oversized timbers. We love it here because of the quaintness of country and college atmospheres so intertwined yet with distance, a place to relax and enjoy and a place to be adventuresome whenever the mood strikes. The mountain streams flowing through the front yard is so unique.
We can't thank you enough for the wonderful accommodations and hospitality. This cabin and property is better than we could have imagined. Every amenity is covered and the natural beauty is beyond compare.
Thank you for making us feel very welcomed and we look forward to the opportunity to return. Five stars

My family just returned from what I believe was probably our sixth stay at Buck Lair, and I am long overdue to write a second review. Words can't express how much I love this place. My family has rented mountain cabins for long weekend getaways at least twice a year every year for as long as I can remember. We haven't rented any other mountain cabins since we first discovered Buck Lair a few years ago. My husband and I are both Virginia Tech graduates, so we consider the location of Buck Lair ideal-tucked away in the woods on a peaceful mountain stream, just a few miles from the best college town in the country (in our biased opinion). There are so many fun things to do nearby: attend a VT game, hike to the Cascades, take a beautiful drive to dinner at The Homeplace (this is a must)... I could go on and on. The cabin itself is as perfect as the location. I am picky about my home and where I stay. Buck Lair is so adorably decorated, cozy, meticulously maintained and spotless, I feel like it is my second home. Ruth is such an amazing hostess, her attention to detail and the little extras she provides just put this place over the top. I'm always looking forward to my next long, relaxing weekend here.
Finally, my only gripe: My family is pretty superstitious about our beloved Hokies, and we have noticed a trend... lately it seems they loose whatever football or basketball game they play when my family is staying at Buck Lair. This must stop, I love my Hokies but I'm not giving up on my favorite mountain getaway.
This was our second stay this year at Buck Lair Cabin! Without reservation, it just keeps getting better each time! From the cabin's captivating ambiance , to the majestic surroundings to the abundant amenities, "This is Home"! As "Diehardhokies", we're obviously at "home" in the New River Valley, but Ruth really does "outdo" herself with her attention to detail.
We arrived on Turkey-Day and prepared a feast with ease as the kitchen was stocked with "any and every" supply imaginable, on Friday it was off to Cascades Waterfall (20 minutes west) for a gorgeous 4 mile hike, Saturday it was the Annual Hokie vs Wahoo beatdown at Lane Stadium (Sorry hoos, but when your archrival beats you 13 years in a row and year 13 it's to the tune of 52-10, we call that a beatdown in Blacksburg)........we still love ya and you'll love this cabin as well! Saturday night we closed it out with steaks on the charcoal grill (creekside) and another fire in the woodstove!
We wholeheartedly recommend "Buck Lair" and plan to return for our third and subsequent visits soon! That should read; "sooner rather than later"!
In the meantime, thanks and GoooooHOKIES,
Ned, Jody, Bryce and Bailey Kuehn

This is our 3rd visit to the cabin. So very relaxing with all the amenities of home! The cabin is very clean and provides a quite escape. We can't wait to return.
Had a great weekend at the cabin, Parents weekend at Va Tech, hiking at the cascades with the family great weekend. Cabin was clean, has everything you need to have a great weekend. We didn't even need to leave the cabin would have been fun just to spend time there. We will be back for sure!!
Once there it's even better than the pictures on the website that don't do it full justice.
Sitting on veranda listening to the babbling brook we felt so relaxed and the tension just draining out of us!
Refrigerator well stocked with necessities and every cooking implement required was there.
The cabin itself is beautiful, aesthetically pleasing in every way, beds comfortable and very clean the whole cabin was spotless, we wish we could have spent more time there and can't wait to return.
Thank you Ruth and Gerald
We've spent several football weekends at Buck Lair and have never been disappointed. Ruth and Gerald are gracious hosts and provide a relaxing, clean, well appointed cabin and property. We brought my father to the Military appreciation game at Tech and having Buck Lair for the weekend topped off a memorable weekend. Thanks, again, Ruth and Gerald for your hospitality and beautiful cabin in a beautiful setting!!
