Circa 1906 one-bedroom cottage was once part of the Briones Mexican Land Grant. The Briones' married into the Lauff Family and this was the home of Jack Lauff. The Cottage was a caretaker cottage. Tucked in an orchard garden., it features a sun porch, separate office/studio; sunny, peaceful, & private location. Or you may be inspired y to bake your favorite cookies and pies. The house just has that feeling. Wildlife abounds...quail, blue herons, deer, blue birds, soaring hawks, and hummingbirds as you bathe in the outdoor tub surrounded by honeysuckle, jasmine and roses.
Just a mile from Bolinas Beach and a couple miles from Agate Beach. Many hiking and bicycling options in State and National Parks. Beauty abounds. If you are not already, you will leave a photographer!
There is a queen size bed in the cottage bedroom and 2 twin sized beds in separate studio bedroom. Additionally there is a full sized futon in sunporch. The ideal number of guests is 4 since there is only 1 bathroom which has a stall shower. There is an outdoor tub in the garden.
Owner lives on the property in another house. There is ample privacy afforded guests as the cottage has its own yard with fence.
When I moved to West Marin from Chicago I knew that I had landed someplace so special. This is paradise! But when I drove down Horseshoe Hill Road and saw this little red farmhouse, I stopped the car. It looked a bit like a Little House on the Prairie as it was set back in a pasture. The cottage was built in 1906 and was part of the Lauff Ranch. I live in the Barn that is also on the property. Flowers and fruit trees and beauty all around. Horseshoe Hill is protected, thus making it warmer than the rest of Bolinas. Most of the surrounding properties have multiple acres so there is privacy. It is about a mile away from downtown and the beach, yet the surf can be heard in the distance as the ocean is just to the west over the ridge. I can't imagine living anywhere else. I have seen coyotes and bobcats, blue herons and snowy egrets, the hummingbirds, honeybees, woodpeckers, several kinds of owls, and other night creatures call in the night. If there is a full moon and weather is clear, there is no need for flashlights to light your way.
Terry Donohue purchased this cottage in 2000
This property is out of the fray of the downtown Bolinas which can be filled with out of town surfers and visitors. While Bolinas Beach and Downtown can feel festive, it is great to be able to leave the beach or return from long hikes to relax on this quiet and light cottage. There is hammock for reading that novel and sip lemonade. In fact there are 4 Meyer Lemon Trees bearing fruit from which to make your fresh lemonade! When they are laying there are fresh, organic eggs from happy hens living on the property. On clear nights, away from streetlights, a zillion stars, meteor showers, planets, and moons have the celestial stage. On New Moon Nights you can go up to the Mt Theater the Mt Tam Lecture Nights and San Francisco Amateur Astronomers (Apr-Oct) where after the lecture, Astronomers will help you view then night sky through their high powered telescopes. See other galaxies, nebulae, constellations. Children love this property as they are safe, away from traffic.
Perfect for family retreat or a romantic getaway. The setting is peaceful and quite beautiful. The gardens are old and well-maintained.
I am conflicted about writing this review and apologize in advance if it somehow ends up compromising the cherished isolation and privacy of the people of Bolinas.
Let me start by saying that we have VRBOed in this area often. In the exclusive Dipsea and Sea-drift enclave as well as Inverness and Bolinas . Horseshoe Hill has always been special to us and getting to spend a few days there further raised our opinion .
Terry, the owner, met us upon our arrival and walked us through the property. Very gracious and helpful.
Although the cottage is circa 1900's and has had a few additions over time it was tidy, clean and comfortable with a very usable well appointed kitchen.
Our day would start with a trip into the village to buy some freshly caught fish and local organic produce for dinner. Then a hike, returning early after noon to sit under the various fruit trees and knit (my wife) while I floated on the hammock.
As I re-read this I'm trying to figure out how to get back there ... so yeah Id recommend it.
We couldn't have enjoyed our stay a Terry's cottage more! Terry is a gracious, hospitable host, who made sure we felt at home. The charming cottage was welcoming and well appointed --- full of nooks for solitude or socializing. Our grandchildren loved picking apples and cooking applesauce from the trees in the yard and feeding the chickens the leftovers. The cottage is easily accessible and a quick drive to town, but it feels private and remote. Bolinas is a truly magical get-away, less than an hour drive from San Francisco. We loved the cool gray mornings which changed to breezy blue afternoons by the ocean. Would love to make a stay here a family summer tradition!
We stayed 2 nights in August 2016 at the 1906 Cottage in Bolinas. It sits in a country setting, with golden fields, huge trees, and only birdsong to hear! The cottage is decorated with beautiful art and comfy furniture. The kitchen was well stocked with the standard essentials. Terry, the owner came over to check on us the first morning and was very friendly. She took our grandson on a walk to meet her chickens! The queen bed was comfy, the boys slept in the studio, which is adorably decorated and steps away. Our granddaughter enjoyed soaking in the outdoor soaking tub, with flower petals floating on the water! You should see the pictures! Can't say enough! The word idyllic is perfect!
This property is private, simple, and heartbreakingly beautiful. My daughter and I both felt like we were in Eden. if we ever return to the area, this is our place.
The cottage is just exactly what we needed to have a family vacation close enough to San Francisco and even closer to Stinson Beach. The drive to the cottage was windy and twisty but absolutely beautiful. There were five of us at the house (3 adults and 2 kids), and the cottage gave everyone enough room to spread out. Thanks Terry, for the lovely place to stay.
