Great in the Winter!!!!

  • 5 of 5

Spent an extended weekend here for the second time in the last 4 month. The difference between the scenery was nice to see. From the second floor and first floor all the foliage has dropped off the trees giving you an absolute clear view of the water. I fully recommend this when it is snowing since it really beautifies the view of the surrounding area which we were able to observe that Sunday morning. The fire place in the Living area was used almost all weekend long if not just for the ambiance, but also really warmed up the place. Places are still open out of season around the area, including the tasting room for Athena which we were able to visit on Saturday and will do often. The family room does have a blue ray\CD player which we used Saturday night to play some old 80's movies while relaxing with friends. Once again this is just an awesome place to spend the much needed relaxing weekend.

We have 2 dogs that are a bit older and were not able to board do to issues with one having bone cancer that is not treatable. After notifying the owner about this since it was diagnosed after we reserved they had no issues with the change. This was something that i know my dog needed and she spent the week sleeping comfortably by the fireplace. I believe she actually felt better and I thank the owners for giving me the opportunity to share it with her without any reservations. I can't wait for the next time I will be able to visit here again.

Great place to unplug

  • 5 of 5

I would have given this place 10 stars if Home Away gave me the ability. This was our first venture with using Home Away and it was a total success. My wife and I spent our anniversary here with my daughter, son-in -law, aunt, and a friend over the Labor Day weekend. The setting for the place is perfect. The house is nestled in a wooded area of the Athena Vineyards and overlooking an inlet off the Great Wicomico River. Every room has a view of the water, but most of our time was spent on the massive deck off of the main room. This property should really be spent taking in the beauty of the area and not watching TV. Over the 3 days we were there the TV and computers were not turned on and no one missed it. Wasn't planed.

For Kayakers this is a must. The water is like glass and there are several forks to follow that brings in all types of wildlife. We had the opportunity to see giant great blue herons from the water and off the deck as well as a bald eagle that you could almost reach out and touch. Launching kayaks off of the dock was easier then we thought with a little beach area provided off of the side of the dock.

There is plenty to do in the area within a short drive. We spent allot of the time visiting the wineries of the area from Irvington and back up to the house which we spent daily stopping off at the Athena's tasting room talking to the partners about our day and there stories, then relaxing on the porch with a wonderful sangria.

Most of our meals we made in the house were they provided everything you would need right down to the waffle iron (thanks Carol). The rooms were so comfortable and many books were provided if you wanted to kick back and get in some reading. There seemed to be allot of catching up on sleeping when available. The bedrooms were so comfortable that there was no issue in getting that accomplished. One item I wish we brought was a telescope. Due to the fact the house is in such a secluded spot there is little ambient light which makes great for star gazing.

Thank you to the owners that gave us the opportunity to stay here. Carol, Ruth and Ada (or as I like to call them Athena's Angels) were fantastic with making this a successful trip from start to finish (I will do better with getting to have that drink next time). I couldn't imagine it going any easier finding places to go or just enjoying your conversation, felt like family. We loved every minute of it and can't wait to schedule another trip.

The property was nice and quint. However there needs to bo some overlooked everyday maintenance. There were a lot of bulbs out, just nuisance / convenience items which would make life easier. I know that your in the woods but monthly spray so creepy crawlers can stay out. Dusting was need and done. But we had a marvelous time, fishing was absolutely 4 stars I forgot my crab traps as I sure that would have been 3 and a half stars if not a 4 star event. Other than those itemS oh and the cable being out, it w as S a great get away. Lastly I would upgrade to a flat screen TV downstairs and also in all bedrooms as well. As everyone is not interested in fishing and crabbing some just love the relaxation and kicking back and watching a little tv and maybe even some xbox. The customer service was great but I feel it should have been a discount given for no cable as that is one of the convenienceS you are paying for too.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your comments. We did not know that the TV was out; there had been a lightning strike. It is now repaired and there is a flat screen TV in the living room. We do spray regularly, but unfortunately, creepy crawlers like the woods. Glad you did, too.

My family needed a place we could all stay over the Thanksgiving holiday, while we visited extended family in Kilmarnock. We preferred not to all get individual rooms at the Holiday Inn Express, especially since there were 7 of us and one couple was only staying 1 night (the H.I.E. had a 2-night minimum that weekend). I was lucky enough to find this little gem - and it was PERFECT! First of all - it's located literally ON a vineyard - AWESOME! Second, it had 4-bedrooms, a full kitchen, a fireplace and a SPECTACULAR view - so for us - it was perfection! We were able to prepare our dishes to take to the family events over in Kilmarnock, enjoy a glass of wine overlooking the gorgeous water and spend cozy evenings by the fire catching up. We were upset that we actually didn't get to spend MORE time here - since we had to spend most of this trip at the home of our extended family members. Friday - we were lucky enough to be able to squeeze in a visit to the actual winery - Athena Vineyards! We had a wonderful tasting experience for only $5, and even bought some cheese and crackers to enjoy during our tasting. Another plus -we were able to stock up on some goodies at the vineyard to give as Christmas presents. The wine was delish - and the ladies there (who also own this rental) were incredibly nice and hospitable. I would highly recommend this cozy and adorable rental for anyone staying in the Kilmarnock area for more than a day or two. It's top notch! :)
