Langarra Estate, with its green lawns and constant, welcoming breeze, is part of a historic 300-acre sugar plantation, now the prestigious, secluded 'Preserve at Botany Bay.' Langarra's quiet and private hilltop site overlooks the Preserve's forested slopes, over its inlet bays, and out over the dramatic necklace of surrounding, uninhabited ocean cays and islands -- a 30-mile view.
European simplicity combines with West Indian sensuality in furnishings, paintings and details throughout the house. With soaring ceilings above, and cool coral-stone floors underfoot, the light-filled interiors maximize the expanses of sky, sea and garden-green seen from every part of the house.
There are four spacious bedroom suites, all with ocean views, large bathrooms and closets, and outdoor terraces. A fifth, queen bedroom/bath suite has its own adjacent living area and mini-kitchen -- perfect for teens, nannies, family elders, or those who may want a bit of separation.
Indoor living spaces extend outward onto the oversized, umbrella-shaded terraces. Sunlight enlivens the site from dawn until soaked-sky sunset hours... and our night skies are peppered with stars.
A large infinity edge pool overlooks the sea...and moments away on the private grounds of the Preserve, two unique beaches are yours to enjoy, often with no one else in sight: pristine, exquisite Sandy Beach (for sunning, bodysurfing, picnicking) ... and Mermaid's Chair, the dramatic, delicate double-beach (good for swimming, exploring, beachcombing), where the Atlantic Ocean and the warmer Caribbean Sea converge and blend. Close by, the folding lines of waves at Botany Bay are the envy of surfers, and the bay's protected, coral-rich shores are a snorkeler's delight. Here, under the filtered canopy of a deep grove of tall coconut and mango trees, are the evocative ruins of the 18th century sugar mill buildings that created rum from the sugar cane harvests brought down from the terraced slopes of these hills, two centuries ago. (Note: current construction in the Botany Bay beach area temporarily limits guest access here).
Newly completed in December 2014, Estate Langarra gently combines its fresh spirit with nature's age-old sensibilities.
Just a short 20-minute drive away are the attractions of town: world-class shopping, gourmet and casual dining, grocery stores, ferries, entertainment, nightlife, and tours.
Each day your choice becomes to enjoy the peace, space, sun, and utter privacy of Langarra and its beaches ...or take time beyond the gates to savor more 'connected' first-world pursuits, albeit island style.
Bob Schmidt and Kim Holdsworth were young when they came to live and raise a family in St. Thomas, thirty years ago. Bob, the President of Zenith Development Corp., grew up in Chicago, working in his father’s construction-based business. He earned degrees in economics and philosophy before moving to the Virgin Islands in 1983 to run a mid-sized St. Thomas building company – the precursor to Zenith Development, which he incorporated in 1988. During the past three decades he has become St. Thomas’s premier builder of high end custom homes. He enjoys golfing, meditation, family travel, and he is a talented chef. He and his wife Kim Holdsworth live in Estate Peterborg, St. Thomas.
Kim grew up in Virginia, holds degrees in Third World History and art, and is the former Director of USVI Kids Count and the annual Kids Count Data Report for the US Virgin Islands. Her ties to the Virgin Islands go back to the early 1960’s when her father, falling in love with the islands’ warm, clear waters, bought a former estate here. A writer, traveler, and a working artist, her paintings often interpret the varied traditions of tropical living, including its langor and humor.
Bob and Kim's son and daughter count themselves native St. Thomians -- and also citizens of the world. They live in San Diego and Sydney, Australia, respectively. The family still takes time to travel and be together whenever possible.
Robert Schmidt purchased this villa in 2014
In a few words: the ridgetop property's perfect peace... the slow-motion views of surf quietly exploding onto the sea-set islands' ancient cliffs... the wild deer on our lawns... the trails from the house into the tropical woods... meandering stone walls that were built as crop terraces in the 1700's... parrots flashing through the leaf canopies... fruit trees... dawn's gold light throughout the house... abundant sunsets giving over to star-filled skies... symphonies of insect music at night... the tropics as it used to be, yet within workable reach of today's chosen necessities.
And combine this with the security and support provided by the community resources of the Preserve at Botany Bay: a manned, gated entrance ...paved roads to the beaches ...a Preserve property manager on-site daily... ...sidewalks lining the hills and inviting exercise walks ...access to pristine, private beaches... Botany's many miles of unspoiled nature...this is a perfect place for friends and family to come together for simple and abundant living -- with few distractions, except the surf.
"My family has been coming to St. Thomas for nearly 3 decades. From infancy I could recognize the beaches of Meagan's Bay, or the outline of St. John from a hilltop, with ease. St. Thomas has always been there when my family needed it most, serving as a shelter from brutal Michigan winters, a place of rest and relaxation in busier months, and in 2012, after my mother passed away, we used it as an escape from heartbreaking grief and trauma. As is the unfortunate norm here in the Virgin Islands, our go-to rental homes are always sold or repurposed while we're away. Consequently, we've scuttled from house to house over the years, leaving precious memories and imprints behind on each location. Needless to say, St. Thomas is dear to our hearts, and when it comes to the island we are hard to impress. Yet despite how high the bar was raised as a result of previous expectations, Langarra still managed to impress. Putting you at what feels like the edge of the earth (sometimes literally if you float too close to the end of the infinity pool), it served as a marvelous retreat for my family. Far away from the noise pollution we're used to in the city, Langarra offers serenity and bliss in it's private hiding spot. During the day, one can escape the sun's harsher rays on the pool deck, or the hot springs at Mermaid's Chair. After sunset, the sky is blanketed with stars even on the cloudiest night, and from any balcony you can clearly make out at least a dozen constellations. In a word, it's enchanting. For large families like ours, the spacious kitchen and ample seating allows you to dine outside or in, comfortably. Stocked with all the necessary appliances to make one feel as though they are in a new home, Langarra certainly charms and puts one at ease the moment they walk through the door. For the first time I haven't felt like a complete stranger in someone else's home, but rather a welcome guest who became easily aquatinted with the grounds. Never a dull moment in this house, which even Hugh Heffner would envy. Spectacular views, reception, and ambience. For someone who's hard to please when it comes to living arrangements on the Island, I cannot speak highly enough of this tropical getaway. Will absolutely return in years to come."
We had a perfect family reunion with 12 family members at this stunning property. Great for all day entertaining around the infinity pool and large patio area and a huge fully-equiped kitchen made holiday dinners easy to prepare with lots of people working together. 5 comfortable bedrooms w/private bath, lovely grounds and the privacy of a gated community made this the ultimate getaway. Sandy Beach is so perfect, with beautiful clear water, fine sand beach and no crowds. Highly recommended!!
This vacation rental was the most impressive home and surrounding property that we have ever had the privilege of staying at. This beautiful home was just perfect for a larger crowd; the open and spacious floor plan was perfect for gatherings, yet all of the bedroom suites allow for personal privacy. The views are amazing from every window ( the shower was unbelievable!) and every amenity was available... from the kitchen - fully stocked with all appliances, serving dishes, anything you need to entertain a large group, to the beautifully furnished rooms, elegant decor, even beach towels are available for the private beach, which is just moments from the home. The property is lush and tropical, tranquil and serene. We were there for a family reunion and we had 12 staying at the property. There was ample space for all and it truly was one of the best vacations that we have ever had! The owners were just awesome to work with as well! I would HIGHLY recommend "Langarra" for anyone wanting a vacation rental above and beyond their expectations!!!
The superlatives that are used to describe Langarra throughout these reviews don't do it justice. It is a home that has to be lived in to be truly appreciated. My family and several friends selected Langarra after exploring many different options in St. Thomas. We were met at the airport and escorted to Langarra, which was about a 20 minute drive. Langarra is one of approximately 12 homes on the Preserve at Botany Bay and is located at the West end of the island. It appears to be on one of the highest locations on the Preserve and the views from every room are spectacular. All of the bedrooms are spacious and offer great privacy. The Master suite is particularly nice although you have to watch out to make sure no one is running around outside since it has a sliding glass door that offers a great view (both directions)! The grounds are beautiful and the private beaches are both worth visiting. Be ready for a workout if you decide to walk because you will get one heck of a good workout walking back to Langarra! All of the beach and snorkeling gear we needed was at the house. We cooked in nearly every day and the kitchen was fully stocked with virtually all of the spices and condiments that we needed. The previous guests saw fit to leave a bit of liquor behind and we were happy to do the same. We used some things from the pantry and added others for the next guests. Sitting outside by the pool at night looking at the stars left us breathless. Robert was excellent to work with leading up to and through our visit. We cannot say enough good things about our week there leading up to Thanksgiving, even if the weather didn't always cooperate. While we took advantage of many of the things that St. Thomas had to offer, we left sharing the conclusion that Langarra was a destination in and of itself. Staying there was the best part of our trip.
My wife and I celebrated my birthday at Langarra with 6 of our closest friends, what a delightful place. The views from the pool deck are breathtaking, I enjoyed having my coffee at sunrise and my cocktails at sundown every day.
You have 2 beaches near you, Sandy Beach and Mermaid's Chair. If you enjoy challenging walks the beaches are within 20 minutes walk, or an easy 5 minutes drive. I preferred by far Sandy Beach over Mermaid's Chair. The latter was way too rocky to access the water but beautiful to hang out.
The kitchen is equipped with all you need to make delicious meals. I am talking Wusthoff knives, anodized pots and pans, top of the line range and stove, an additional ice maker for those cocktails and all this with a great view.
If you choose to use the concierge service, Corrina is fantastic. She is extremely responsive, punctual, and pleasant.
In short, I strongly recommend Langarra for a one of a kind vacation.
Our week-long stay at Langarra was everything we anticipated and more. Our family of nine (three couples, a single, a toddler and an infant) had more sleeping accommodations than we needed, and ample room to eat together, socialize, catch-up, and enjoy the many amenities of the estate and private beaches. We reluctantly ventured out a couple of times to visit Charlotte Amalie, St. John, and to visit some of the surrounding islands, but always looked forward to the return to our temporary 'home'. The sunset views from the pool were nothing short of spectacular, the private beaches (particularly Sunset Beach) rivaled anything on the island (albeit without the crowds), the privacy, security and serenity of the home and location were comforting - in short, Langarra represented the best of what St. Thomas has to offer. The estate itself offered every amenity we wanted and needed - pool, gas grill, dining areas inside and outside, extra icemaker, unbelievable 6-burner gas stove, all major and minor appliances, multiple washers and dryers (for those bulky beach towels), cable and wifi service, ceiling fans (to gently blow those evening breezes across you as you sleep), beach chairs and snorkeling equipment, and so much more. I actually hesitate to make this place sound too good, for fear that it won't be available the next time we wish to vacation here. That being said, I cannot 'bad mouth' this place - it was simply wonderful!
My family and I loved staying at the West End Estate! The house was laid out perfectly with a large open area for all of us to gather. Each of the (5) bedrooms felt like an oasis from the others! All bedrooms had their own bathrooms, closets, comfortable beds and some type of seating area. The pool overlooking the view gave us a wonderful place to escape when the beach got too hot or at night when we just didn't want to rest! The kitchen was perfect to navigate and prepare meals for our large group. The beaches were a short drive and staircase away - and the gated neighborhood was beautiful to drive through. Make sure you check out where the grocery stores are located - as one of our guests is a chef by trade, island grocery shopping is a little different - plan to use what you find - much easier than searching for specific items!! There were extra cots in the laundry room which was helpful to have for the children. This house was a perfect escape and we found ourselves relaxing and not making too many plans other than to enjoy the beach, pool and each other's company! Located on the west end, far from the hustle and bustle of the east end, this place is a sanctuary!!! We all hope to get a chance to visit again!
Langarra enjoys seclusion yet is just a 15-minute, winding ride by car from St. Thomas' world-class shopping and daily activity downtown, from the University, and from Reichhold Center for the Arts where nationally-acclaimed musicians, dance and theater companies perform throughout the season. Further on, find public beaches, golf, eco-tours, sailing, deep-sea fishing, and ferries to St. John. Meanwhile, a vibrant, bi-weekly farmer's market and cultural fair enlivens Fortuna, the small village within a half mile of Langarra.
