About Peter Mumford

Our family built this home in 1968. The house was designed by architect Allen Moore in a New England vernacular shingle style with rustic exposed wood throughout.

The original owners (David and Erika, our parents) loved being close to nature. The great blue herons on the mudflats, the seals sunning on the rock ledges, foxes in the woods, and the terns, ospreys, and eagles all fishing in the river made it a special place. This natural oasis continues to be a special place for our family.

For some it takes a day to adjust to the quiet. You can spend hours exploring the cove on foot or by boat (if you bring a kayak), digging for clams or mussels (check for red tide warnings) and wandering in the forest. At night you can keep the door to the end bedroom open and hear the water lapping in the cove or a distant heron.

Peter Mumford purchased this house in 1968

Why Peter Mumford chose MidCoast and Penobscot Bay

For those who want more than just a sandy beach, mid-coast Maine is a special and haunting place, a rough-hewn granite coast of fjord-like peninsulas overlooking thousands of small islands topped by twisted spruce trees, sculpted by the wind. The cry of the loon through the fog is as bewitching as the sun glittering on the sea's surface, among dancing lobster buoys and gliding seagulls.

Be aware that Maine tends to be wet in the early summer & cold in the early fall; you may need some bug spray in the woods... but as they say in New England, If you don't like the weather - stick around!

What makes this house unique

Private, family time, amazing sunsets, swimming, walking, reading by the fireplace, picking mussels or digging clams, kayaking. Going into town for movies and ice cream.

Excellent biking throughout the peninsula, running on the trails through the woods, followed by a refreshing dive into the water.

Spectacular setting for a private family getaway

  • 5 of 5

Fantastic week at "7 Doors". What a location, like two vacation spots in one! On the west side of the house we enjoyed dinners on the deck with sunset views out over the water - and the kids loved playing on the rocks below when the tide was out. On the east side we thoroughly enjoyed the beach when the tide was in - the kayaks & sunfish added to the fun - and ate our lunches at the picnic table overlooking the gently sloping yard, swing set, and beach area. The house was beautiful & spacious (kids loved playing in the loft spaces) with wonderful artwork and look-through views of water all around. The setting was spectacular and private- perfect for a family getaway (we had 3 kids ages 2-6 and 2 dogs)- "7 Doors" gave us our best vacation experience yet. Hopeful to return again.

Beautiful Reunion in Maine

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed here for a week this August. It was our first time to Maine and this house didn't disappoint. The inside is beautiful and covered in books, the back deck is perfect for watching the tide come in and out and the front is great to get shade for the summer sun. The house came with everything you could need, appliance wise (sans toaster which was just fine). We had 8 adults staying overnight and had room for extra bodies if needed. The location is great, super close to Rockland AND Port Clyde. We never ran out of activities. The kayaks that are at the house are a must do! Peter was always available to answer questions and give suggestions, he was EXTREMELY helpful. I would return in a heartbeat!

Beautiful, original house in a unique location

  • 5 of 5

This is a stunning house, replete with incredible views and in a perfect location on a quiet Mid-Coast Maine peninsula. We were two families with young children, and we loved the size of the house and the multiple options of things to do in and around its immediate vicinity. We played on the climbing frame, swam, paddled, searched through tidal rock pools, watched the sun set, barbequed, and walked in the forest. We ran out of time so didn't get to do any bicycling or boating. The house is really well-equipped for guests, with a thoughtfully and comprehensively stocked kitchen. The owners are non-intrusive but immediately available for questions. All-in-all, a wonderful find, made more special by being welcomed in to this beautiful family home. We hope to come back again.

Wonderful Maine Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

Excellent family vacation. Kids love searching for mussels when the tide went out. Kayaking and Rowboating were a big hit also. Beautiful scenic property and comfortable home. All this made our two week family vacation rememberable. Excellent location for day trip sightseeing. Visited many local towns, great shops and food. Sunsets on the water breathtaking as is evening rowboat rides. Great place for pets, our dog loved the water and walking the shore at night during low tide. Cool nights made time by fire enjoyable and great for movie night. Plenty of space for large families, kids enjoyed bedroom lofts and exploring the shore for treasure brought in each day. Owners were wonderful, friendly and very helpful at all times. Would definitely recommend to friends and family as well as the possibility to revisit again in the future. Thank you for making your home available to us and allowing us to visit this exceptional place.

Great retreat site!

  • 5 of 5

I brought my team here for a three night, three day retreat in September. We had a lovely time and look forward to returning again. The living room's monitor is HDMI-compatible, which allowed us to project presentations, and the kitchen was big enough for us to cook multi-course meals together as exercises in team-building and sustenance. The house is lovely and six adults were able to share the 2 bathrooms easily. It was a bit cool but we made fires and the gas fireplace offered lots of heat. I highly recommend this site for teams of up to seven looking to focus on a project or plan for the coming quarters. It would also be perfect for two families with kids vacationing together.

Awesome place for family of all ages

  • 5 of 5

We rented this house for a week last June. We had grandparents, parents and 3 teenagers. The only thing that was missing (which was big at first to our teenagers) was a good internet access and cable tv. However this ended up being a good thing...the kids weren't on their phones and we all watched movies together on a few nights! Everyone loved the house and the surrounding woods. My daughter and I ran every morning..through the woods and along the water. My son took up sailing in the little sunfish that was included and came home to Florida and bought his own sunfish. We enjoyed kayaking and clamming and watching the lobster boats move about on the water. We also enjoyed exploring the nearby sights of Maine, including the Owls Head State Park and lighthouse and the little village of Owl's Head. It was kind of like living in a postcard for a week. We would definitely recommend this house!
