The Encore Condo, is a beautifully furnished 2 bedroom 2 full bath condo with lots of large windows overlooking historic Church Street. The master bedroom is an en suite and features a king bed. The second bedroom (queen) is well separated from the master and next to the hall bath (full). This condo features lots of natural light, comfortable living area, full kitchen with separate dining area, washer and dryer, dishwasher, microwave, WiFi, cable. This building has an elevator.
When you look at the quote for your dates, the rates may be different than what you saw on the previous screen. This is because we have lower rates on weeknights, and the previous screen shows the weeknight rate as our only rate. If you picked weekend dates then the rates will be higher. Downtown Asheville is VERY popular on the weekends but not quite as busy during the week. In order to accommodate this we lowered our weeknight rates. For last minute bookings, we also offer discounts and flexibility on minimum stays of two nights on weekends. All of your costs are calculated automatically with the correct rates when you select your dates in the online booking window.
For parking, we recommend the public garage under Aloft hotel on Biltmore Ave. It's close to The Altamont Condos and not very expensive. Many guests leave their cars for their stay and walk around downtown and use a ride sharing service if needed.

Some of the LEED certification requirements met in this historic renovation are: - All hot water is solar. - Steel framing, sheet rock, and other materials are recycled. - Materials from the building that were removed were recycled and diverted from Landfills. - Many new materials are non-emitting. Great location! Great place!
Wonderful long weekend getaway. The place was in great shape. The location is awesome.
the loud place
The location was good you could walk to most of the restaurants and shops. The apartment was clean and in good working order. The noise was too much. From the upstairs neighbors to the theatre next door. There was no scheduled program while we were there but one went on anyway and didn't finish until 11:30. I checked the schedule before we rented. You can hear everyone upstairs. The first night we thought they were moving furniture and it went on until 12:00am. If you are young and stay out until 12:00am I would recommend this place. The water in the shower was hotter the second day but not hot. We will not stay here again.
We're sorry to hear about this now. We own the building and did not renew the lease on the theater so it is closed as of the end of 2017. During early 2018 the space will be converted into additional residential units. As part of that work we are going to install a ceiling system between floors to better insulate for sound. It's an 1895 structure and the ceiling/floor system is stacked planks. We've finally found a system we can install to counter that.
The water temperature is a surprise. We'll have someone look at it. Had you called during your stay we would have tried to get someone out that day. All the hot water for the building is initially generated using rooftop solar panels. The heated water is stored in multiple large tanks in the basement, then it's distributed throughout the building and each unit has its own electric water heater as a backup. For us, cooling the water is the bigger issue. We need to using mixing valves to introduce cold water into the hot water flow to ensure the water is not unsafely hot. Typically the unit water heaters wind up being storage. It's possible the unit heater was needed and has a problem. They are rarely relied upon so it's hard to tell if there is an issue.
Convenient downtown location
Nice open floor plan. My 2 sisters and I enjoyed a weekend together shopping, dining and sampling great beer. Some updates that would have resulted in a more pleasant stay at The Altamont are: replacing the pillows on the king sized bed - they are totally flat, spraying WD40 on the bathroom door hinges - they squeak horribly whenever the door is opened or closed, replace burned out light bulbs in overhead fixtures and lamps - several were out, replace light over the stove- it was burned out, provide a box of tissues - this is a basic amenity especially for the price we paid, provide half and half for coffee - another amenity I would expect at this price point (there are non-refrigerated options). I wish we had know that the condo is right above a theater before we had booked it. This fact is only made available after you have paid for the unit. This is a 6 unit condo. We were on the second floor and had lots of noise from the poetry jam, and the crowd that gathered under our window to chat after the theater closed at 11:00 pm. If you are a night owl you will probably not be bothered, but it should be disclosed before you pay for a unit.
Thanks for the feedback. We have a couple of points that need clarification. Most importantly we do not hide the fact that the theater exists. We're very open about it and we do not collect any money until we have a signed agreement where we spell out again that it exists and if the guest has young children or goes to bed earlier we recommend booking something on the third floor. If you had contacted us about your concern after you read the agreement we would have happily worked with you. On your dates, we could have moved you to the third floor. We own the building and are not renewing the lease for the theater when it runs out at the end of 2017. Since we're booked out out weekends until the end of the year, we've removed references to it from our descriptions.
We address how to handle maintenance or supply issues in the arrival information. We have extra supplies if needed and of course a number to call for anything that's missing or is not working. We do our best to catch issues but sometimes things get missed. We have plenty of extra light bulbs and boxes of tissues in a supply closet if you were OK to get them or could have sent someone there to replace them for you.
We are always happy to help if a guest needs assistance.
I've stayed at The Altamont on several occasions. My first visit was for a girl's weekend. The location is fantastic, the unit was spotless, and the owner was very responsive to my emails. Also, there were no performances at the theater on the bottom level (more about this later).
I stayed at The Altamont for a 2nd time last December. This time, we had a horrible experience.
We were greeted by dirty floors, a dirty refrigerator & crumbs EVERYWHERE (e.g. - on the dining room table, ottoman, and on the couch....just to name a few areas). I emailed the owner, and he immediately sent a person to re-clean the unit. We did not micro-manage the process - we assumed the cleaning person would thoroughly clean the unit. Unfortunately, we encountered additional issues after the housekeeper left:
- Dirty toilet in master bathroom - fecal matter under stool lid & embedded in the screws that connect the lid to the toilet
- Filthy mattress pad in master bedroom
- Dirty dishes in dishwasher
- Strainer in kitchen had black mold spots on the bottom of it
- The living room reeked of urine. We traced the source to a couch cushion. We sprayed disinfectant on the cushion and the odor subsided
- Area rugs were littered with trash
- Hardwood floors with filthy (wet paper towel was black when we wiped the floor)
- Broken shower door
I emailed the owner a 2nd time to inform him about the issues we noticed after the housekeeper left. I wanted the give the owner a chance to make things right for us versus posting a negative review. Unfortunately, I never received a response to the 2nd email.
Also, the performance at the Altamont did not end until 12:30am on December 23rd (instead of 11pm as noted in the marketing materials for these units). The walls in the Altamont are PAPER THIN. Highly recommend checking the Altamont's performance schedule if you are looking for a quiet stay.
On a positive note, the condo is very centrally located - very walkable to all the great Asheville restaurants, and a short Uber ride to the Biltmore & Grove Park Inn. While the condos are centrally located, they are tucked away on a quiet side street. The building itself has a ton of character. The owner also makes check-in super easy.
My first stay was 4 stars and the second stay was zero stars - hence the 2-star rating.
After your review I looked back at our emails and spoke to the cleaning person, Kelli. There seems to be somewhat of a disconnect. Your first email asked me to have someone come over and deal with some crumbs on the furniture and rings on the table. Kelli dropped what she was doing and went over to help you. She reported back to me that there were a few crumbs in the deeply recessed buttons of the ottoman. She explained that the rings on the table were permanent and not a cleanliness issue. She had you come look at the unit and make sure there were no other problems, and she left you her phone number in case you had any more issues. She also reported that you apologized for your parents and you explained they were “old and particular”. Then you sent the following email to me: “Thank you for sending Kelli so quickly. I was here & got a chance to chat with her - she is awesome. She wanted me to check the unit to see if there were any unaddressed issues. My parents will be pleasantly surprised when they return from dinner to see that the unit has been cleaned.
Thanks again for your responsiveness. I hope you have a happy holiday!“ The only other communication I have from your is asking about having the NFL package. That was 24 hours after Kelli was there. At no time did you contact me about and additional issues nor did you call Kelli despite having her number. You make it sound as if this was the dirtiest and most unsanitary place you had ever seen but you didn't feel compelled to elevate that over finding about the cable package or actually calling Kelli. In my conversation with Kelli she said that she observed that there were some indicative things in the unit when she went in. Ultra pure water, air cleaners, bottles of sanitizer and special pillows and all in large quantities. It appears someone is hypersensitive to cleanliness and in turn very picky. That's fair enough and not any of our business, however since you described things the way you do I think it is completely fair for me to put that into context since you chose to post this review. There is not an issue with cleanliness in our units, it is an issue with one or more members of your party being picky to a point where they travel with these items. I think with this information that your descriptions are completely over the top and an opinion that is coming from a nonstandard point of view. Our units are clean by any reasonable standard.
This was an excellent location for our girl's weekend. Beautiful condo!! Thank up so much Brian. Hope to see you again soon.
Great weekend getaway
We chose this condo because it was directly downtown. It has a very convenient location and is very close to lots of great restaurants and shopping. The condo was very clean and is perfect for 2 couples since it has 2 full baths for privacy. It has all new furnishings. Our contact, Brian, was very accommodating and even gave us superb restaurant recommendations which were "spot on." The Biltmore Estate is only a 15 minute drive away. I highly recommend this condo for those who want to take part in Asheville's nightlife and delightful restaurant and art scene.
