Tom & Susan are both workaholics. Tom’s an active scientist and Susan’s a homemaker, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and wonderful ballroom dancer – hence the Ballroom on the top floor.
Tom bought the property in 2009 and removed the 1977 modular home that was there. He designed and built what you see today. It's a work in progress and continues to grow.
It is a large but simple spacious lived in comfortable country home. The main and top floor have 10 foot ceilings and the Ballroom has a 16 foot high cathedral ceiling. There are wood stoves throughout and free firewood. All kitchens have gas stoves (Tom likes to cook).
When the house is done we’ll start on the conversion of the post and beam barn.
Tom & Susan purchased this house in 2009
North Hancock is a pristine rural area nestled in the Beautiful Berkshires yet very close to everything – just minutes from Jiminy Peak, Tanglewood, Theaters, Museums, The Mass Pike, The Taconic State Parkway, Colleges, Pittsfield, Albany, etc. It’s 2 ½ hours from Boston and 3 hours from NYC. It is also less than 1 ½ hours from Mt Snow and many other ski resorts.
Brand New, owner/builder occupied, with panoramic views.
Walking distance to Jiminy Peak.
The apartment was excellent and very well located within key sight seeing areas of the Berkshires. I was impressed how clean it was and there was a lovely bowl of fruit on the table for us. The combustion stove is a winner and there were sufficient facilities in the kitchen for preparing food at home. The hosts were lovely and friendly and provided good local advice. The only thing to be aware of is that while the Blonde Apartment sleeps 6, which is fantastic, the two queen sofa beds are in the open living area with TV etc so the kids ended up staying awake until we were all in our beds. Having said that, I would still definitely stay there again.
This was our second stay at this property. The property was very clean and well appointed. The friendly owner greeted us shortly after arriving and made sure to inform us that if we needed anything, just ask. There was a large bowl of fresh fruit on the kitchen table which was a nice touch. The property is situated in a peaceful wooded area with great views of Jiminy Peak Mountain. For a one bedroom apartment, the unit is very spacious. The bed was very comfortable and the bedroom was quiet.
My wife and I stayed, along with our one-year old dog, at the Blonde Apartment in Hancock, Massachusetts, in mid-August. We were e-mailed great instructions on how to get there from owner Tom, as it is one of those places where a GPS will only get you to the general vicinity. Upon arrival, we were greeted warmly by Tom himself who stayed around to chat and answer any questions we had about the apartment and the surrounding area. A full fruit basket greeted us. The ad on VRBO mentioned the kitchen had a coffee grinder and I brought some beans along to make coffee. There wasn't a coffee grinder, and I mentioned it to Tom when I saw him; more as a reminder for future renters not a demand for action. But the next day, lo and behold, there was a coffee grinder in the kitchen. That's responding to feedback! We enjoyed the wide screen TV as the Olympics were on.
There are lots of things to do in the area that are within half an hour's drive of Hancock. We enjoyed Mt. Greylock State Preserve and the Bascom Lodge where we had a casual dinner on the summit (though reservations are required). The vast art museum complex housed in an old factory, Mass MoCa, was only a half hour's drive away for a different kind of culture.
For those bringing dogs, there is plenty of green space on the site along with woods for walks. Just take normal precautions driving up to the house as the driveway is steep, uneven, and not paved. But this is the country not a condo development.
All in all, we had an excellent stay at the Blonde Apartment and would recommend it to anyone who wants to stay in a unique place in a rural setting but with all the amenities you would expect in a high end rental.
My family and I spent six unforgettable days in Tom and Susan's delightful rental house, the blonde apartment.
With all the conveniences of modern life (I have never seen so many power outlets in one house), our stay was relaxing and comfortable, in what can be only described as a magic natural setting.
Tom is extremely knowledgable about the natural attractions in the Berkshires, and gave us several excellent tips on what to do, where to hike, swim and eat.
It's the first time I used vacation rental, and Tom & Susan's house is an starting point. House is spotless clean, great location.
Tom & Susan are both very helpful. Before our vacation he provided details in how to get around; during our vacation, he was very kind to show us around. It's a great vacation and I am sure we will come back to this place for winter activities.
In Winter All wheel Drive / 4 Wheel Drive is recommended. It's ski country and the House is on 'The Hill'.
