About John Gilbert
I grew up in Baytown, TX and then received Petroleum Engineering and MBA degrees from Louisiana State University (LSU). After spending a few years in California and Australia with various software companies, I moved to Austin, TX in 1991 and started my own business. Upon selling the company and retiring in my late 30's I quickly learned that I needed more activities than just playing sports all day, and wound up with a nail-gun and 250 acres of raw land on the Llano River. Originally conceived as a few head of cattle and a couple of rustic, riverfront cabins around a firepit to spend time with friends, and my wife and three kids, it's since grown in scale and maintenance to the operation that exists today. Although years later, as a 5th generation engineer and wanna-be architect, I'll probably always be designing or building another 'project' at Red Sands but it has finally evolved to the stage where I can (almost) call it complete.
John Gilbert purchased this Estate in 2003

What makes this Estate unique
Red Sands Ranch is a unique property specifically for guests that prefer an exclusive, private outdoor resort experience in a rustic, natural setting unlike anything available at the large hotel chain resorts. Although expensive, the total rental for a large group is actually much less than a hotel resort stay even before you buy that first $8 beer -- and you won't have to share the pool with 150 kids in swim diapers. The ranch elevation (1280-1400ft) and semi-arid climate of the area offers more comfortable summer breezes and cooler nights than most of the large metropolitan areas of the state. Other than the spectacular Texas Hill Country setting, the most unique feature of the property is the layout of the compound where the pool, cabana (kitchen/dining), firepit, tennis and all the other resort amenities, are part of the main gathering area (rather than some back parking lot) while the separate cabins offer peace and privacy just a few steps away. In addition to all the activities, kids are always captivated by the abundant wildlife, crystal clear river, and the sheer number of stars visible in the clear night sky. Come make some memories and experience the real Texas!

Excellent accommodations on a scenic ranch. This was our second time renting the whole ranch. It was perfect!
Perfect for family reunion
This was an awesome place for our family reunion! It was in pristine condition and the owner was extremely accommodating. Lots to do for all ages of kids and adults. Highly recommend Donya Young to provide meals. Food was fantastic. She too was extremely accommodating to all our needs and her service provided a truly care-free stay. Don't miss the opportunity to stay here - it is a beautiful place set in a very scenic location. The cabana area provided the perfect place for the family to gather. It's not to big and not too small. We had 25 adults and kids plus some infants. Perfect place!
Amazing for close friends and family!
We had 5 families with 13 kids ranging in age from 4 to 15! It was absolutely an amazing time! Plenty of fun for everyone! Highly recommend Donya, the chef and jack of all trades of amazingness! She took such great care of us, went above and beyond for our children and really took the entire experience to an entirely different level!
Highly recommend for families that have kids that swim!
Very nice secluded location on Llano River
We had our family reunion and it was perfect for the 23 of us. The pool and slide is where we hung out most of the time to beat the heat. Everyone had a blast going down the slide. The cabins were perfect as well. Thanks John for sharing your little piece of paradise with us.
Perfect for large groups looking for a screen free vaca.
Our group of twenty was half adults and half kids of all ages. Everyone had a blast. Adults could retreat to separate cabins for some quiet time and kids could play all day. River was a nice change of scenery from the pool. We did bring our own Polaris and four wheelers to travel back and forth from cabins to river. It helped to have those to transport all the tents and chairs etc. About 12 of us partook in the two hour tube ride with the help of the neighbor to the west. It was a tad slow but relaxing. Owner was wry responsive. Donya was a great chef and host and everyone agreed the food was delicious. The refrigerator had a bit of trouble keeping the food cold. One of the two full size fridges was only suitable for drinks. We did go through a ton of ice, but that is to be expected in August in TX. Pool got a tad hazy over the four days but nothing too bad. The tennis court hosted some intense evening sporting competitions. All in all the place is great for large groups. I would highly recommend!
Great Private Resort
Great place for R&R! Everything was clean and ready for our arrival. We swam, played tennis, and cooked every meal in the outdoor kitchen. It was great!
Note: Bring plenty of food so you don’t have to leave to run back to town
Although guests rarely leave the property during their stay, the quaint town of Mason is just 9 miles away with gas, groceries, and lots of shops around the historic courthouse square, while Fredericksburg with all of its shopping and attractions is about 35 miles to the south down winding country roads. One favorite nearby attraction is the Eckert Bat Cave where millions of Mexican Free-tail bats can be seen emerging from the cave on summer evenings -- about 10 mi away.
Austin and San Antonio Airports are each 2hrs away. Mason County Airport (T92) is about 15 mi.
