Just booked for the 4th year. We love this place.

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I have just booked this beautiful cottage for the 4th year. We have been going for a week in the early fall each year for the past 3 and always look forward to our time there. We even spent our honeymoon at this cottage.

The cottage is as nice as it looks in the pictures (or even better). Everything that the other reviewer’s state is true, the place is breathtaking and has everything you need. Just bring your clothes and personal items. The cottage is perfect for a romantic getaway for two or just some time on the beautiful Lake St Catherine. When we go in early fall it is quite peaceful. It’s on a dead end road so very little traffic. We like to go for walks and everyone that we meet is very friendly and helpful.

We use the kayaks supplied by the cottage and paddle around in the lake. There is a state campground across the lake and down a little. If you go there you can land on the beach and walk around and explore/enjoy the beautiful campground and beach.

We also go for drives around that part of Vermont, enjoying the scenery and exploring. It is beautiful country. The roads are good and the people are friendly.

We have once had the pleasure to meet the owners. They are very nice and very attentive should you need anything. We have never had any problems and we would recommend this rental to anyone. I know that you will enjoy it as much as we have.

Owner's Response: Scott, Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review for our cottage. We love it too, all the stress of the work world goes away when we get the chance to use the cottage. We are glad that you love it as we do and have come back four years in a row. We have several other guests that are approaching the same return rate. We look forward to seeing you again in the fall.

Wonderful Rental!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved staying the week in this cottage. It was great being right on the lake and having kayaks to use as well. The cottage was clean, welcoming, and had everything we could have possibly needed. So glad we found this place and decided to stay here.

Cozy, sunny getaway for 2

  • 5 of 5

We loved our week on the western shore of Lake St. Catherine. The almost countless windows facing the water gave the small cottage a real feeling of airiness and light. On the clearest mornings, the sunrise over the hills to the east was spectacular, with the colorful sky reflected in the tranquil water practically at our feet.

The cottage is comfortably furnished and the kitchen well equipped for even a rather ambitious cook on vacation. There were spices, oil, etc., on hand, so we didn't need to buy all ingredients, though we replaced things we emptied.

The bathroom lacks a tub, but the spacious, beautifully-tiled shower was very nice, and discouraged wasteful water consumption.

The bedroom was grand, the "cathedral" ceiling adding to the feeling of freedom. Ample closet and built-in bureau space provided plenty of places to hide away the typical clutter of travel.

Outdoor space is limited to a small, well-shaded patio and a narrow strip between the cottage and the lakeshore, but the wrap-around windows in the living room-dining room area reduced our sense that we needed to be outside all the time.

The cottage's location is quiet, except for weekenders zooming around the lake in power boats. Arriving on Saturday, that was really only an issue for us on Sunday. Weekdays were tranquil. I gather from lake activity that fishing is popular. Several interesting attractions are within 30-45 minutes drive, though there's a limited amount to do much closer. A winery practically at the top of the shore road made for a nice diversion, as did the farmers' market in Poultney, and a few very interesting shops. The used book store on Main Street in Poultney was a treasure-trove, and Nancy's bakery and café dished up some amazing homey baked goods. We even ordered an apple cake with maple frosting from her to take away to a family picnic the day we left. Dorset has a great playhouse; more than ample shopping can be found in Manchester Center (including North Shire Books, a spectacular store). We hiked in the Green Mountains, visited Revolutionary War sites, stopped in some artists' studios, and bought farmstead cheese. The gravel recreational trail that runs north-south through Poultney to Castleton is lovely, though not for narrow road tires on bicycles.

Believe it, it's a nice as it looks.

When I saw the photos of the cottage on this website, especially it's location right on the lake, I thought, "This is just what we are looking for." The cottage is exactly as described and shown in the extensive photos. The lakeside cottage is designed to maximize the breezes and views of lovely Lake St. Catherine. It has a wonderful mix of up-to-date amenities (powerful gas stove, stainless steel refrigerator, etc.) with a relaxed, Vermont lake cottage feeling. There are thoughtful touches throughout the home such as an iPod/iPhone dock player in the living room that fills the downstairs with music. We used the BluRay player to watch DVDs on the large flat screen TV in the evenings. We had beautiful weather and some pretty warm days (around 90 degrees), but the house felt comfortable thanks to the ceiling fan in the loft bedroom plus all the windows on both floors. This end of the lake seems especially quiet. Even the motor boats with skiers came by at a reasonable speed so it just sounds like summer, especially when their waves hit the shore. The cottage is near the end of a dead-end road so there is very little car traffic here. Just a sense of tranquility and privacy in a well-maintained home.

The surrounding area is filled with Vermont beauty -- farms, rolling hills, rivers, and lakes. We enjoyed driving to the various surrounding villages taking the opportunity to pick up raspberries and corn from local farmers. A surprising find was the Slate Valley Museum in Granville, NY. A very enthusiastic and knowledgable staffer, Amy, gave us a brief introduction to the regular collection plus some special exhibits including one about immigrants to this area. We also did the self-guided walking tour and admired the many beautiful slate roofs in town.

We highly recommend the Birdseye Diner in Castleton, VT -- a lovely little town nearby -- it's a 1940's dining-car diner and has wonderful food including delicious pies. The country store across the street has a great selection of local foods, beer, and wine. Plus the banana bread you can buy there (from the Castleton pizza place) is fantastic. Farther afield in Rutland are Roots Restaurant and Table 24 -- both offer local produce, beers, and wines. Perry's in Poultney offers good, casual food.

All in all, a lovely, restful getaway in beautiful surroundings with a perfect lakefront cottage to come home to. Our only regret is that we didn't stay longer.

Owner's Response: Thank you. We try to make our cottage as comfortable as possible with a touch of home. We were drawn to Lake St. Catherine 30 years ago and have always loved the lake, the area and the people we have met here.
