Whidbey Island 1930's Cottage on 13 Acres

Bedrooms 1
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

This inviting, one bedroom cottage is a 1930's gem. Located between Freeland and Coupeville on South Whidbey Island, the Artists Cottage offers privacy and unique blend of rustic elegance on 13 acres of fields, woods, and wetlands. Especially intended for longer stays, there's a well equipped kitchen, original art on the walls, and the delightful rooms boast color, texture, and warmth.

Inside there is an automatic gas fireplace, a claw-foot bath tub, while outside you can enjoy a hot tub on the back deck overlooking the wetlands and forest. The pond in the front yard is regularly visited by ducks, herons, and even deer. The beautiful Meerkerk Rhodedendron Gardens are a short walk away and the historic town of Coupeville and incredible Ebey's Prairie are a short drive to the North. More antiques and artwork can be found to the south in the village of Langley.

About Nancy or George Roberts

We raised our two boys on Whidbey Island for 18 years, while George taught school and Nancy ran a cafe. When we decided to expand our horizons, we realized we could not part with our cottage at Greenbank. It is such a special place. We added a larger bedroom, decks and hot tub, and visit as often as we can. It is a great pleasure reading the guest book, and sharing a favorite place on the planet with others.

Nancy or George Roberts purchased this cottage in 1991

Why Nancy or George Roberts chose Greenbank

We have owned this 1930's cottage for many years before we decided to turn it into a vacation rental. It is rare to have such privacy and 13 acres of woodlands, trees, wetlands, and meadows, all to oneself, with of course, the deer, rabbits, ducks, and birds that we share it with.

What makes this cottage unique

It is a fantasy come true... Private lush life surrounding a darling cottage, decorated with art from the Pacific Northwest simply nourishes the spirit! And a live animal planet channel right out the window!

At&t carriers - caution, you may not have much to any service at the cottage. Hopefully you will not need it!

The place was very cozy and accommodating for my husband and I during our stay. Close to many fun things to do, hikes, water, farms, wine tasting, etc. We lucked out and got snow while we were there too! That outdoor hot tub was probably my favorite part of the place.

Going Back in Time

  • 5 of 5

We had a relaxing weekend that was way too short. The cottage had everything we needed, and was clean and comfortable. We love the charm that an old house has with all the imperfections. Thanks so much for allowing us to bring our dog along too cause he also needed to get away. Had a good time. Thanks again.

Clean, quiet, and cozy

  • 5 of 5

My partner and I recently spent 3 nights at the cottage for her birthday. Unlike the previous reviewers, we found the place exactly as it was last time we stayed in June - clean & tidy. There was no evidence of mice activity anywhere, and if there had been mice present, our dogs would have alerted us to them. When we arrived, I checked all the problem areas cited by the previous reviewer, and found nothing. If there were mice, the problem has been resolved. The gas fireplace was on when we arrived, and was at just the right temperature to make the cottage warm & inviting. We never bothered to turn it up or down, it was set just right for our liking. The hot tub on a chilly, rainy evening was perfect. The only bad part of our stay was when we had to pack up to go home - we wished we could have stayed longer! We would book the cottage again with no hesitation.

Owner's Response: Cern, So sorry to respond so late to you. Thank you so much for your kind words...we appreciate so much your communication, as much as we appreciate you staying with us and enjoying the place! It is hard sometimes for housekeepers to notice things not readily seen, so it is great to have guests that communicate. We hope you will return again and thank you for your business! All Good Things, Nancy

PROSPECTIVE RENTERS TAKE HEED. Other reviewers are correct—the outside property is wonderful, the hosts are accommodating, and the art work is great. But that is where anything else positive stops. We found mouse droppings the carpet, on the floors, in the kitchen silverware (!!) and other drawers, in the bathtub (!!!) just to name a few areas. We cleaned all of it up several times but gave up—as it reappeared in short order. The capper was actually sitting on the toilet and watching a mouse poke his head out from behind the tub (where there are several gaping holes in the wall). We took silverware we needed out of the drawers with droppings, washed them and put them in s sealed ziploc bag to keep them from contamination. Dishes and pots in the cabinets also had droppings, repeatedly—we had hoped they were old and once cleaned out would be fine. It was not. Dirt is caked on door thresholds and baseboards throughout. This place has not been thoroughly cleaned in ages. We have photos to provide VRBO if so desired...this is not a case of us being fussy guests. Rustic and quaint is fine—-filth and mice cohabitating are not.

We have been staying in VRBO’s for the past 4 months as our home on the island is being renovated. We have never written a bad review. But, we sure wish prior guests had warned us about the true condition of this rental—we never would have booked. We wanted to leave on Day 1 (Thanksgiving), but hotels and other VRBO’s were totally booked.

This negative review is not written to be mean or spiteful but, instead, to warn prospective guests, VRBO, and the owners that this property needs serious attention before it is habitable.

Owner's Response: Cary, First off, i want to apologise. In many years and 7 properties, we have never had a review like yours. How I wish you would have called us right away and we would have sent a professional over to take care of the mice, and a housekeeper to clean. This must have happened in the last week, as previous guests never said a word . You can be sure we are taking care of this right away and would like to offer you a free 3 nights next time. Again, we sincerely apologise. We obviously could not stay in business if this were a regular happening. How we wished you would have called. sincerely, Nancy and George

Great little eclectic cabin

  • 5 of 5

We stayed five nights in this little bungalow in what felt like the woods - but it was right off the highway (btw we were never bothered by the noise- could hardly hear it). We saw many deer, bunnies and even a snake. A swallow made its nest right above the kitchen window and was very active in the morning flying to and from the nest. This cabin was sweet and cozy. The artwork was great and felt local. We stayed at the hottest time of the year. We easily found fans and were able to stay cool at night. I imagine most days of the year are not in the 90's. My husband and daughter had just enough room in the home that it didn't feel like we were on top of each other. We loved visiting Langley and it was very easy access to the Clinton ferry. We had a great stay and would recommend to anyone who loves rustic, artsy and woodsy - this home is for you. Thanks so much for allowing us to stay there.
