The house is located approximately 5 miles from Milbridge, where you can stock up on all your supplies. There is a movie theater in town, a library, several shops, there is a pharmacy as well. Take a hike up Pigeon Hill right from our place and enjoy a 280' view down toward Acadia Park, out to the Petit Manan Lighthouse, on up to Jonesport and Cutler , you are in the heart of Maine's Bold Coast!
Maine native residing in the mountains of western Maine now. Grew up on the coast, and wanted to share my childhood memories with my kids. They are older now and on to other activities, but we still love to spend time here, the downeast coast is a wonderful step back to a simpler time!
Elizabeth Listowich purchased this house in 2004
We love the quietness, the distant fog horn from the lighthouse. The shoretrail hikes are superb! The kayaking is awesome. Surrounded by two wildlife preserves, we get to watch the shore birds and raptors daily. We have many eagles and osprey.
In a quiet neighborhood of private nice homes, yet secluded and quiet. Wonderful sunsets from our deck, and a magnificent mountaintop view is just a 15 minute walk up from our home.
Our family has been coming to this area for about 20 years. We spent two weeks at Bunchberry Cove during the middle of August. What a treat. Throughout the months before our arrival, the owner was fantastic in answering all our questions and giving us some hiking recommendations. The house had a great layout for our adult kids and grandchildren. We appreciated all the special touches from local pottery, artwork, maps and books to identify birds and wild flowers. It was a real treat to have the kayaks and a nice dock to launch from. The views are spectacular and even if you are sitting inside, you feel the beauty of this area. We have rented a number of different places, but this tops our list of favorites!!
My husband and I decided to come to Maine for our honeymoon. We were interested in the Acadia/ Bar Harbor area- but wanted to stay away from the crowds. This location and house is perfect! We were not fully prepared- we are used to a TV, and seeing people frequently. It took a bit of adjusting...but once we adjusted it was perfect!
The actual house is clean and very comfortable. It is fully stocked- but they ask to replace something if you use the last of it. This really makes you feel right at home. The view is breathtaking and relaxing!
We took a trip to Bar Harbor- which was great. There were a lot of people everywhere. Cadillac Mountain is a MUST! We were in the clouds- and saw some great views!
From the house- we kayaked around Sally Island and spent hours staring at an eagles nest (with babies in it) - and waiting for the mommy or daddy eagle to come back to it. It was completely amazing. We saw a few eagles- from the house too! It was nice to be able to just kayak from the house. The tides were something we weren't used to (being from Kentucky)- but there was plenty of information on when low and high tide is.
On the 2nd or 3rd day- we went to Milbridge. We enjoyed the restaurant 44 North. People were friendly, food was good, and beer was cold! They also have a nice grocery store there- and a post office and town office where you can buy a fishing license.
One day we went to Christophers- a restaurant about 20 minutes away. We were the only ones there because it was the first Tuesday that they were open. The waitress was great- and gave us lots of tips. The food was great as well!
We also took a trip from Milbridge to see puffins and seals. It was called "Downeast Tours." Our captain was friendly and great. We saw 2 lighthouses, puffins, seals, and eagle, and he pulled up a lobster trap for us!
We had a great time here! We spent a lot of time at the house relaxing, cooking, and listening to the local radio. I can't say a bad thing about this place! I would definitely recommend it!
Our family of 8 adults and 5 children (babies and toddlers) stayed 3 nights. We had a fantastic time!
First off, the home is gorgeous, clean and welcoming. The deck that is partially covered and wraps around the house was great for dinner and playing. I love the swings that hang from the deck, that was a pleasant surprise. Sitting inside and being able to look out onto the cove through large windows made it feel like we were outside too. The living room furniture is extremely comfortable and the beds were also great. We opted to clean ourselves and found everything we needed in the closets. It was extremely helpful to have the kitchen cabinets stocked with essentials incase we had forgotten anything.
Second, the hosts were easy to communicate with and made us feel very welcome in their home.
Third, the area has some great places to visit. We went down the road and did the Pigeon Hill hike. We did this later in the day and regretted this decision because once we reach the ocean there are many places we could have explored. I would recommend making a day of it. The drive to Acadia is not bad - we went once in the morning and then later in the day when tide was in to experience that.
Fourth, keep your eyes on the cove, you never know what animal you may see. We were eating dinner one night and something caught our eye, we grabbed the binoculars because it looked too large to be a bird and to our surprise it was a moose swimming across!
I would definitely recommend this rental. You do have to drive to most places for activities but it is not far and the privacy was great. It fit our family well, the toddlers could run outside and be loud. We look forward to another trip!
We highly recommend Bunchberry Cove! There are magnificent ocean views with great sunsets off the back deck. There are many activities including kayaking. The house is very well appointed with a great layout and very well stocked. Overall, a very comfortable, enjoyable experience. We are looking forward to returning to Bunchberry Cove next year !
This place is my favorite place to vacation every summer. I've been renting this place for the past five years and I try to time it to coincide with blueberry season. The home is perfect - on a small unpaved road in an elite summer community, beautifully and lovingly appointed and cared for. It's a wonderful balance between cottage casual and downright gorgeous. The owners have great taste and take exceptional care of the place. Th view is spectacular - on a quiet cove, with the tide rising an falling every 6 hours. The home has some kayaks which are useful for exploring the inlets and birding treasures (last summer we saw bald eagles, ospreys, and great blue herons on a couple of kayak trips). The place is the perfect location: 1/2 hour north of Ellsworth, about 3.5 miles down Pigeon Hill Road from Route 1. It's about 10 minutes's drive to Millbridge and a good grocery store. Plenty to do and explore around the area including hiking trails, at nearby Hollingsworth Trail; a short drive to Schoodic Point National Park, and lots of other things to do.
But, in many cases it is hard to pull yourself away from this beautiful, serene, and comfortable home. Waking up in the morning in the master bedroom with the sun coming up across the water, lazing on the sun-deck on a perfect summer day, hanging out in the living room after a sumptuous lobster dinner (lobsters bought fresh from the fish market up the road and cooked on the gas cooker outside) all make for a relaxing and perfect spot to have a vacation.
I am torn between writing up a glowing review that does this lovely home justice and wanting to downplay the perfection of this place so that I won't have to compete with other prospective renters for the weeks that I want to have it. So - I'll go ahead and lock in the weeks I want it now and the rest of you will have to work around my schedule! Good luck - because this is the best vacation rental on the Maine coast in its size and price range and, if this year is anything like previous ones, it will be booked solid for the entire time the owners want to rent it!
Located along Dyer Bay, surrounded by the Petit Manan Wildlife Refuge and the Pigeon Hill Conservation Area; this property is a wonderfully relaxing get away in Downeast Maine. Enjoy shore trail hikes, take a walk up Pigeon Hill for a spectacular view encompassing Acadia, Petit Manan Lighthouse, Jonesport, and Cutler. Watch the lobster boats working, enjoying kayaking out into our protected cove and into Dyer Bay beyond. Look for one of the many eagles, osprey, gulls, or migrating shore birds as you explore! There are 2 eagles nests just a short paddle away. Sunsets from the deck are grand. Town is only 5 miles away, with all the necessities you may need. Acadia Park's Schoodic Peninsula is a 20 minute drive away, with Mt Desert Island only a 1 hour drive. Take a spin up the coast and experience the Bold Coast Trail, Jonesport , Machias, or visit Campobello (Roosevelts summer home-be sure to bring your passport!) Our hide away is quiet and serene with many chances to experience nature at its grandest!
