Kootenay Lake is paradise found!!!
A free ferry to Nelson (Nelson is often referred to as Santa Fe north for its interesting art, restaurants, city centre) is further up the lake and provides a great outing. Ainsworth Hot Springs are near Nelson as well. Nelson has golfing, skiing, mountain biking and sandy beaches.
Crawford Bay is about 30 km north of the cottage along Highway 3A. An artisan community that features glass blowing, broom making, organic foods, iron works, painting, quilting...you get the idea.
Boswell located about 10 km north has a glass castle to tour!
Creston, 30 km south is a gem of a town with all kinds of fresh/organic produce including tender fruits and vegetables grown nearby. The old movie theatre is a classic for catching a recent film. A variety of restaurants tempt the palate. The Creston Wildlife Management Centre is just west of Creston and features 17,000 acres of nature. You can do interpretive hikes, guided canoe trips, climb bird blinds and see all sorts of interesting animals and birds.

Why Lorene Archdekin chose Creston
This is the best of Canadian outdoors...kayaking, boating, hiking, mountain biking or just sitting on the deck with a good book are all perfect activities here. More details and pictures are found at www.woodbury-point.ca

My husband and I had a lovely week at this treasure right on the edge of Kootenay Lake. The cabin can be found if you follow the driving directions exactly, as there really is not a sign that you can see from the highway. The driveway takes you down past three other places tucked into the trees. The cabin is well stocked with everything you would likely need, although bring batteries if you think you will use the flashlights, and matches for candles that are there. The propane for the BBQ was a full tank, and they thoughtfully leave a large jug of bottled water in the fridge. The kitchen has salt and pepper, but you will want to bring spices if you generally use them. I had to laugh after reading a newspaper write up in our local paper where they tell you to bring practically everything when going to a vacation rental! If you bring your shampoo and food, you're good to go here! We had taken our own 'pool towels' for the beach or if we were to go to the hotsprings, but we didn't end up using them. Friends came to spend the weekend with us and we didn't really leave the deck and the beautiful views! We took sugar to make humming bird food, and they kept us well entertained. If we could have changed anything it would be to have an easier access to get the kayaks into the water. But the two 60 year old men braved the rocks and had a fun time kayaking along the rocky shore! The weather was varied, and it is fabulous watching a storm over the mountains and lake. There are lots of games and books at the cabin, and enough wifi and cell service to manage while on holidays. We wil look forward to returning another time!
What a terrific review! Many very practical suggestions too! Thanks so much for taking your time to do this!!!
What a beautiful place! Breathtaking views from every corner of this place!!!!
The cottage was much better than what we were expecting from the pictures. Very comfortable for the 5 of us and well equipped. And the amount of windows in every room - wow!!!!
Kayaking, fishing, sailing and sitting by the fire were our best moments. The deck was of course our favorite spot. My husband caught enough fish for all five of us to have a nice dinner.
Our two teenage girls were so happy having this wonderful place to explore and take hundreds of pictures :)
Humming birds were visiting us daily right outside the kitchen window - what a treat.
We would recommend this cottage to anyone looking for a place to get away and relax.
I hope to be back.
Thank you Lorene for sharing your cottage with us.
I'm glad the hummingbirds where up to their usual antics. Thanks for writing such a great review! Glad you enjoyed yourselves!!!
The moment my husband and i walked in, we knew we loved the cottage. Beautiful views from every window with lovely breezes throughout the place. Clean and organized. We loved cooking in the kitchen and found everything we needed from a salad spinner to corkscrew, just every utensil you could ever need.
The deck was our favorite spot, over the lake and surrounded my mountains! We saw eagles every day and humming birds. (we saw deer a at the side of the road right before we got to the cottage) and also again on the way back from an afternoon at Twin Bays beach - which is just a couple of minutes down the road.
At night the star gazing was truly amazing. We saw a shooting star one night lasted for several seconds and the tail was spectacular with all sort of colours.
We also enjoyed going to Nelson one day and Creston for shopping.
i would highly recommend this cottage. Thanks Lorene for making the whole process so easy and for all your helpful tips!
Curtis and Tracey
My wife and I had an awesome time fishing, kayaking, and spending time with friends and family that came out during the week. fishing was awesome right off the rocks. We caught about 15 fish during the week a mix of kokanee, rainbow trout, mountain white fish, and squaw. The cottage was even better than we were expecting. definitely enough room for a larger group or family. The cottage came completely equipped with everything you could think of, even a washer and dryer. We both would definitely recommend this cottage.
Thanks Tracey and Curtis for your wonderful comments! So glad that you enjoyed yourselves in this beautiful setting!
Wonderful spot for a getaway!
Our first impression was "the pictures just don't do justice to this rental". We have had many "cottage" experiences and this is far beyond a cottage. Everything that one could imagine is in the kitchen...extremely well equipped! The home was gorgeous and the scenery incredible. We kayaked down the lake and felt like we were alone in the wilderness...wonderful when you need to get away from it all. Having said that, Creston is just down the road (30km or so) and had everything else we needed.
There were two amazing storms while we were there and actually lost power for a day, but contacted the property manager who "phoned it in" and within 24 hours all was well. It does get pretty warm, so a fan would have been helpful... and one recommendation to visitors..bring lots of mosquito spray. The mosquitoes were horrendous... but then it's been a really wet summer. The other note is that there are many stairs to the water... and very deep there. We were fine with it, but others may not be.
We drove up to the ferry to cross to Nelson...a great experience! Make sure you stop in Crawford's Bay and visit the artisans there. We came home with a "Harry Potter Quidach type" hand made broom and two beautiful handmade wrought iron lamps. It was also really interesting to visit Nelson and see how different it is from Creston... so enjoyable!
All told, my husband and I and our two little dogs had a wonderful vacation. We highly recommend this listing and found Lorene wonderful to deal with. We only hope they decide to rent this out again in 2014. We'll be back!
Thank you for your amazing and substantial comments! Such a treat to know that you enjoyed both the cottage and the interesting surrounding areas in the Kootenays. Thanks again for taking your time to prepare comments.
We had a fabulous time at the cabin. Kayaking, swimming, fishing, hiking is great. The cabin is fully equipped and well maintained and the owner is very helpful. Highly recommended!
