This subdivision was once a plantation. The plantation house still exists & is just 'up the road' from the property on Castlebrook Drive. Other: visit well regarded NC Zoo or Aquariums....or take a day trip to 'Straw Valley' home to several of North Carolina's renowned potters & their galleries. Raleigh is situated midway between beautiful North Carolina mountains and spectacular beaches Drive 2 hours west to see mountains or 2 hours east to visit beach and the antebellum city of Wilmington - is still an active port city but most popular attraction is the battleship North Carolina moored across the river from the downtown Cotton Exchange shopping area. Has old South feel. Good restaurants on the water, too.
(information provided at the house for best routes, etc.)
NC State Campus is about 15 minutes from the property. It is the flagship campus for engineering, textiles and design of UNC system - worth a visit. Just a short drive to Duke University Campus also well worth the drive.
It is a stunning campus (rumor is that Washington Duke took his architect to Princeton and said: 'build me that') The Duke Chapel, a classic Westminster style, boasts many 'claims to fame' ;i.e. an organ that took the expert from the Netherlands more than a year to install on the million dollar balcony Duke had constructed to accommodate the organ. Stained glass windows of deep colors - all the blue glass purchased from Blenko Glass & anyone who knows glass, knows Blenko. Don't miss the Sarah P. Duke Gardens that are maintained by many expert botanists so that each season the plantings provide a beautiful display of the flowers of that particular season. Your college basketball fans will know about the Duke Blue Devils and their number 1 ranking year after year. Unfortunately, tickets to Blue Devil games are very difficult to get. If lucky, you may be able to see the Duke Women's highly ranked basketball players. Call Duke Sports office to inquire about same. Sunday services at Duke. UNC is home of a terrific basketball team also.
This property is only about a mile and a half from a city park where tennis courts are available.
As stated earlier, there is sooooo much available in this area that listing everything here is a bit difficult but information will be made available at the house for your review and enjoyment. The seasonal changes are beautiful.
Charges are$350 per night with a 3 night minimum; plus $200 cleaning fee; plus REFUNDABLE damage deposit of $500.

We have had weddings ( up to 160 guests) & large events in the past. We are not booking any weddings or big events at present as we find large groups cause stress on us- on our property - & neighbor's. If you would like to plan an event you should talk it over with Norma to see if they will accommodate you.
As Homeaway blocks contact information, you may send a message via email which will go through Homeaway to Norma.
Thanks for your interest in our property.
Older, retired folks with a house that is too big. Spend a lot of time in southern Florida but when in NC, occupy a private suite with own entrance, deck, etc. Cannot see or hear guests and vice versa. Diligently respect guests privacy but are available if any problems.
Norma & Carroll Matthews purchased this house in 1971
The property provides wonderful entertainment areas..is close to many interesting, beautiful and historical NC places. It provides space and furniture for family enjoyment...antiques retired & replaced with 'family friendly' furniture. Wonderful sun room overlooks the pond & grounds. Grill for outside grilling. House is fully furnished including kitchen. All you need is your suitcase.
So for comfort in an elegant home this is place for you and your family.
Many family gatherings have taken place as well as wedding parties & families, international, professional teams, business/corporate retreats, very versatile facility.
Stocked pond & fishing allowed. Brim, bass & channel cat fish.

Have had several weddings where gazebo was used as altar. Accommodated 100 or so guests.
Stocked pond, circular driveway, big lawn for croquet/horse shoes etc. but bring your own equipment. Unique as this property has been landscaped to provide privacy but is near other homes. This development is surrounded by city but has good 'country feel'
Development is site of old plantation & plantation house restored- almost at the end of our street. Privately owned and occupied. Not open to public.
Nature trails & city park w huge new aquatic center very nearby - also has 2 to 3 story water slide. Nominal daily fee for non residents.
Shopping, state fair grounds, universities within 15 minutes. Duke & UNC about 25 minutes via interstate.
Serene atmosphere but near all the city amenities.
My family and I traveled from Louisville, KY to Raleigh to celebrate my brother in-laws 40th birthday. Though we rented a place to have the celebration, this beautiful home provided more than enough room for majority of the Raleigh family to come by each day during our stay to have dinner, watch movies, relax and just enjoy each other. Normally, we would stay in a hotel when we visit our family in Raleigh, but now my husband has been spoiled and he does not want to stay anywhere else during our visits. And of course, Norma was the BEST!
Thanks Norma for everything. We will definitely be back!
The owners are prompt & responsive. The house is big & has plenty of everything. We were 2 seniors, 3 young adults & a toddler for 2 separate events over 4 nights. While not the most luxurious place we've ever stayed, it was comfortable, accommodating & well stocked. I especially appreciated that there are good reading lamps beside the beds & the chairs.
My friends and I had an amazing 4-day stay here. The host was super accommodating, and the property was gorgeous. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a place to stay in Raleigh!
We stayed at the Matthew's house for my son Matthew's wedding the weekend after Hurricane Matthew visited NC. It was a great weekend. The house met our needs perfectly. As a result of the hurricane, there were some issues with house that prevented us from using the basement as planned. The owner was very apologetic and worked diligently to make sure we were comfortable in the main house. We were very comfortable. The owner and manager were in contact several times to make sure that we had what we needed. The house is large and beautiful, lots of space and very comfortable. I would definitely recommend this property and I would stay again. We also used the caterer next door for the rehearsal dinner and it was a wonderful event. We had a cool Fall evening, a full moon, a fire pit, and some great food and it was all right next door. The Matthews had recommended him and we are so thankful they did.
Our stay was made more exciting by the arrival of Hurricane Matthew. Our hosts went out of their way to make sure we had milk, bagels, cream cheese, oj, candles just in case since we arrived late at night. We really enjoyed our family time in this beautiful house.
We flew in using South-West, American & Delta. The home we were to spend the next few day was everything we could have hoped for. The bedrooms were all spacious however, the kitchen & sunroom were our favourite spots. Here we spent most of our waking hours planning & plotting ways to entertain our special guests the day after the wedding.
The view of the pond & lawns from the sunroom is priceless.
Surrounded by the city but country 'feel'. fantastic location for access to all important NC sites. Must see old state capital in center of downtown and Queen Anne historic governors mansion. The art museum is a must as well. While you are there go treat yourself to some warm Krispy Kreme doughnuts & coffee. (Caretakers/owners reside in small private area of property & are available to meet your needs)
