About Kay and Augusto

We are a couple with four children who have enjoyed living in Bar Harbor since 1995. We are both architects and have lovingly restored this gem of a home to its glory while incorporating modern amenities and our own touches. We own another Bar Harbor property as well - the Cottage on Cottage - and enjoy traveling (we always rent homes when we travel and enjoy being able to provide similar comfort to other travelers!)

Kay and Augusto purchased this house in 2000

Why Kay and Augusto chose Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island

We purchased this home because having had few owners before us, it had retained most of its original features and charm, and as architects, we knew good bones when we saw them! Since then, the home has been totally renovated, and serves as an excellent design laboratory - even our most discerning clients have appreciated the hospitality and ambiance of this home!

What makes this house unique

The fireplaces, the wooden fretwork, the massive entry columns, oversized front door, the diamond paned windows...they just don't make them like this anymore! Elegant, but livable and oh, so well located!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a wonderful experience at Kay and Augusto's house in Bar Harbor. The location was perfect, within walking distance to everything in the town. The house was the perfect size for us, 5 couples. We had space to be together and to be alone as well. We cooked most of our meals at the house and were pleased to see the kitchen so well appointed. Kay was very helpful, even checking in with us when she'd heard the power had gone out. The outage didn't last long and was back on before dark. I would love to come back to Maine and their house is the perfect place to stay. Thanks to Kay, Augusto and Anne for making our stay memorable.

It was a great home, perfect in every way!

We rented the home for our family vacation and couldn't be more happy with the accommodations. The description and photos didn't do the home justice. It exceeded all expectations.

Amazing location and extremely helpful owners!

  • 5 of 5

The house was very well kept and beautifully decorated. We were greeted with a free week's pass to Acadia national park and all the comforts of home. Every time we had a question or concern - the owners could not have been more helpful! As for Bar Harbor and Acadia, they now rank in our top vacation spots. If you are considering this property, book it now! You can hike in the park in the morning, rest on the front porch in the afternoons, and enjoy the town in the evenings. Have fun and Godspeed!

Great Location!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 11 (Ages 8 to 64) enjoyed this place very much. Kay was very responsive to the questions I had prior to our visit. We felt very fortunate to find such a nice house to rent for less than a week in this area. The house oozed charm. It had enough space for all of us and was clean, comfortable and well equipped. It was on a quiet street and was a great location convenient to down town and Acadia National Park. We could walk to shops and restaurants. The grocery store was just around the corner. Our whole family enjoyed walking to Bar Island at low tide. My husband and I walked to a bike shop where we rented bikes to ride in the park. We would recommend this place to others!

Wonderful downtown location

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying at this home. It was our first visit to Bar Harbor and we fell in love with both the home and the town. Just steps away is the charming downtown area with tons of shops and restaurants, around the corner is a grocery store, and a five minute drive gets you into Acadia National Park. Couldn't ask for a better location!

A wonderful family vacation.

  • 4 of 5

Your home was perfect for the ten of us. One of the items I would change would be queen size instead of full size beds in two of the bedrooms. The kitchen was wonderful, with lots of room for multiple cooks. The porch was delightful and we all enjoyed walking to town each evening. The children loved, loved, loved the piano. The proximity to Acadia is certainly a draw. Although flexible with check-out time, I think for the price, we should have had a full seven nights. Bar Harbor is absolutely beautiful and we had a wonderful time with our family.

Nice, but needs attention.

  • 3 of 5

Having returned from a week's vacation in Bar Harbor I wanted to share a few of the observations my family and I made with regard to this property.

The house is centrally located-which allows for easy access to grocery, bakery, restaurants and other points of interest in Bar Harbor. The online photos do in fact depict the inside décor however since the photos have been taken some wear has occurred.

Immediately upon entering the home an odor is noticed-We attempted to utilize febreeze and air fresheners/candles to rid the smell however were unsuccessful. Odor appears to be more profound in some areas of the house over other areas.

Bathrooms are all old/outdated-Downstairs bathroom (near media room) is extremely small-made you feel like you were inside of a box while showering. No outlets were available in the bathrooms to allow for hair drying-My sisters and I were forced to utilize one bedroom as our hair/makeup/changing room as there were working outlets and a portable mirror.

Numerous light switches throughout the house were inoperable and/or mislabeled (i.e. the switch for the kitchen was never found between the refrigerator and wall). The "media room" provided an assortment of wires/cables running everywhere, adding to the general cluttered appearance.

We all commented the rental property could benefit from a deep cleaning as many of the windows had cob webs-Some hidden by curtains. The upholstery furniture located in the in the front seating room and media room could benefit from a steam cleaning. Additionally, we noted there was a constant mustiness/dampness while sitting on the couches/chairs.

Owner's Response: As recent reviewers have attested, these issues (stemming from a malfunction in the dehumidification system) have been resolved for some time. Further, there have been many upgrades in furnishings, lighting, plumbing, air conditioning, windows, decor, linens and amenities. A professional cleaning team cleans deeply and thoroughly. We take comments and suggestions to heart!
