The lake has some of the best fishing for 5 types of fish in Colorado. (Bass, Trout, Sturgeon)
Imagine waking up on a still morning-your only neighbors are the fishermen on the opposite shore of the glassy lake. There is absolute peace. You pour yourself a hot cup of coffee and sit on the veranda watching the birds gathering their daily needs. The pelicans are fishing. The Canadian geese hug the shoreline. The swallows are swooping for water. The hummingbirds are buzzing the flowers. As the house starts to stir, you step inside to start breakfast.

Westcliffe is a sleepy Colorado mountain town. The valley is famous for its cattle ranches. Increasingly, we have charming Amish buggies on the roads driven by families who have moved into the valley because of its fertile fields and wide-open spaces.

We are a family of four who have grown to a family of 10 when we include our married children and grandchildren. All our children and grandchildren have worked for us in our nearby businesses. One of our hobbies is renovating buildings. This lodge is one of those hobbies. Just 2 hours from Colorado Springs, this lodge is our refuge and reward for all our hard work. We absolutely love it here because it is a place of complete tranquility and peace. We love gathering with family and friends and realized it would be a perfect meeting place after sharing holidays with up to 30 of our extended family here in Colorado. In the days of the Spanish Conquistadores the valley was known as La Mojada-the “Wet One”. Today the Wet Valley is part of a Scenic Byway-Frontier Pathway with over 323 days of sunshine. “La Mojada”, Custer County, Westcliffe, Colorado, Sangre de Cristos-whatever name you use for this place, all of them conjure up the time and spirit of the Old West. With a history of silver, gold and cattle ranching-where such names as Bull Domingo Ranch are part of the local color, the Lakeshore Lodge on Lake DeWeese in Westcliffe, Colorado stands apart from the rest. When our family came to Colorado over forty years ago, we were searching for a weekend retreat large enough to shelter our family and all the grand children we hoped to have someday. We looked for a place of comfort and quiet close enough to drive after a long week running our family business. We found it in Westcliffe and over the years we have saved and built and created a place with our own hands. A place we think of as just about the most beautiful and most restful in our beloved Colorado. Today we are blessed-better than we deserve-all together there are more of us, give or take a few friends some of the grandchildren are always asking to bring.
Lois and Maurice Woods purchased this lodge in 1992
“Simple Pleasures-Profound Peace” Our beloved “Wet Valley” has changed so little over time. We watched others towns all change beyond recognition. Not our Westcliffe. With all of its beauty, the biggest change has been the designation of our lake as a state wildlife reserve and the area as a Frontier Pathway-Scenic Byway ensuring they remain unchanged in perpetuity. Westcliffe is known as the place where successful people come to be regular Joe’s. That sums it up. Nobody puts on airs in Westcliffe. Remember what “It” was in the Billy Crystal movie “City Slickers”? If you get “It”, if you understand what is important in life- hard work, playing hard and the love of friends and family, then you will “get” Westcliffe and come to think of it as part of your family history. We chose to purchase the property in Westcliffe because we could own the land and waterfront. We knew that this would always be so because the Lake has now been closed to further development and designated as a state wildlife refuge. Its proximity to Cripple Creek sold us on the place, it is close to home. Finally, Westcliffe is one of the most beautiful spots in Colorado! There are some cabins near the lake, there are only three families that own their land and beach on the lake.
Our favorite guests are folks who like rustic mountain cabins, love wildlife, campfires and low-key vacations. Understand that manicured lawns with non-native flower beds are NOT part of a wildlife refuge. This is not a place if you don't understand that birds need grass seeds and bugs to eat. This is not the place for you if you are not charmed by our muskrats feeding at sunset or a harmless gopher snake. This is not the place for you if you need a sanitized Disneyland. The lodge is clean, comfortable and cozy. It is our home-not a hotel. You will have everything our family wants in a vacation rental.
We enjoy all of the fruits of the valley when shopping for fresh produce and meats. We like to cook family meals outdoors, take long walks, swim and fish in the lake, and dip in the pool. We also enjoy family game nights. Simple and satisfying. Gather together easily in 7 bedrooms, 6 baths, kitchen, a great room, media room and loft Down at the Lake Meeting/Recreation room there are over 150 ft of waterfront, kayaks and paddle boats for exploring the 10 miles of shoreline or trolling for fish. There’s a fireplace, pool/ping pong table and a few vintage arcade games the kids have collected over the years. (We’ve even been known to banish the personal electronics and engage the grandchildren in spirited board games or the excitement of our collection of vintage jigsaw puzzles!) Once the stars come out, strike up the fiddle or unroll your projector screen. We’ve created an outdoor amphitheater perfect for campfire programs, outdoor movies or singing songs under the stars.
Our family gathered to celebrate the wedding of my granddaughter in Westcliffe. Our sincere thanks for sharing your great accommodations and all the great possessions that were fun to look at and enjoy. All your nature items, the pictures (especially in the wedding room), antiques and just the special area were an addition to our fun and enjoyment. This place will always be a great spot in our memory bank.
New Year’s Celebration 2016-LOVED IT!
Thank you so much for opening the Lodge for ages 3 years to 76 years. We came from Kansas, New Mexico and Arizona and really enjoyed the beautiful mountain views with the snow!
The Lodge is very comfortable and spacious and the children love the loft, plus everyone enjoyed the rec. room and hot tub. Our younger boys created an ice shuffleboard on the frozen lake.
Thanks for all the decorations and we enjoyed the tree!
The P. B. M. A. and C. Families
Our family stayed at the Lodge and rented the Tower, in addition we had use of the Recreation Hall, the swimming pool, and the paddle boats, kayaks and canoe. We have a mountain cabin ourselves but it is not big enough for our reunion group of 24 people. What a fun time we had! Everything was neat and clean, the furniture is cozy and comfortable, not stuffy. The owners are really easy to work with and it is clear from the decor that they love their home.
The Tower was the favorite of the kids. They could race up and down all three floors, and they slept on the fourth floor observation deck and watched the stars.
Our family has some star-gazers and we love that Westcliffe is designated as a "Dark Skies" area. It is one of the darkest cities in the U.S. Although we have heard that the Fourth of July fireworks on the lake are spectacular, we are thinking the best time to return would be during the annual Perseid meteor shower in August.
If you love astronomy, you will love Westcliffe. The kids will tell you that they loved jumping from the hot tub into the swimming pool to dipping a toe in the lake! Bring your bikes if you like to ride flat around the lake. Mountain bikes would be great too if you like hills.
Our group loved the views and the sunsets are out of this world, our group gathered on the deck every evening to toast to another day. Can't wait to go back!
Thank you so much Woods Family for sharing your beautiful Lodge with my family! Your place far surpassed our expectations and the kids are still talking about all the fish they caught! Westcliffe is a precious time piece that can't be replaced anywhere; we felt so lucky to experience time as if it stood still. Quaint, perfectly appointed rooms, kitchen and living spaces were just perfect for our family of 17 persons. Mr and Mrs Woods are so warm, making us feel so welcome! They are a wealth of information, and helped us organize all our little day trips. the Apsens were just starting to show their fall colors across the valley, magnificent views and property! We were so sad to leave but have already booked our favorite week for next year! You will just LOVE this lovely Lodge, thank- you Woods family! Tamra
When I called the owner to request a return booking, she mentioned her appreciation for my family. She and her husband got such a kick out of our kids playing in the pool and running around the yard like a bunch of wild indians. They have kids and grandkids and said it reminded them of when their family was young. They even hauled out an inflatable jumpy-slide that they use for family reunions. That was a huge hit. The kids had so much fun running between the pool, hot tub and lake, they were worn out at night and fell asleep around the campfire and had to be carried to bed. We learned quickly to dress them in their pajamas and a coat.
When they weren't playing, we taught them to fish. We brought our bikes and explored the lake. We took one day out to visit the National Park nearby. We also sent the older children on a river rafting day trip on the Arkansas River which they loved. If you like camping and the great outdoors, you will love this place. Bring lake shoes or aqua socks for the kids to wear indoors and outside and in the water.
My organization booked the home and conference center for our annual staff retreat (15 people). From the moment we arrived, things went downhill very fast. The owners provided the wrong reservation date to the cleaning woman who had us arriving a day later. This meant that the home was in complete disarray when we arrived. The front door was wide open and we wandered in to trash, cleaning supplies, dirty laundry, etc. and were told that the home would take at least several more hours to prepare. We headed into town with our group to wait for the home to be cleaned and arrived back at the house several hours later. Although the house was in much better shape than before, it was not at all up to our standards for cleanliness, organization, and comfort. The house is VERY cluttered and it is difficult to move around the dining area and kitchen. There is dust and cobwebs EVERYWHERE and the carpets and rugs are so filthy. The pool area was also dirty with toys and pool equipment littering the patio and the picnic tables that are old, dirty, and falling apart -- nothing like the photos. The conference room is similar. Old furniture, cluttered spaces, dirt and dusty everywhere. Multiple areas of house and conference center also smell badly. There is not a single scenario that would make me book this home again, nor would I recommend it to anyone that is considering a stay. Take my advice and look for any other options available. The only two good things: view is great and owner is refunding the first night's booking charge (which is the very least that should happen).
I arrived just after Memorial Day and I was delighted to see Spring in the Sangre de Christos.
Coming from a busy airport up into the mountains, it takes a while to get used to the quiet and the dark skies at night. The lodge is very cozy since the temperature is very mild at night and there is plenty of firewood which we used for fires in the fireplace and the campfire. Since my last visit there is a new horseshoe pit, a new fire pit by the lake, a basketball hoop, and alifeguard tower for the kids and a new swing by the lake. The sunsets were spectacular and there was lots of wildlife and birds. I saw a bald eagle and 9 white pelicans that migrate to the area each year.
This is a rustic ranch property and we can make group meals and enjoy the spectacular sunsets. From the Lodge, you can see the Sangres and if there is a thunderstorm in the afternoon, it can be spectacular. Colorado is enjoying another year of good rain and everything was green with lots of wildflowers. The nearby Arkansas River is full and the raft rides are very fun. Be sure to bring bikes if you have them. Play games, read a good book, go into town for ice cream and plan to completely unplug and have a true rest.
The area is surrounded by National Forest. Hundreds of miles of hiking trails and dozens of hidden lakes in the Sangre de Cristos. There is a four-wheel drive road over the Sangres directly to Great Sand Dunes National Park. Ice Fishing at the lake in the winter is very popular. The lake is stocked with 5 kinds of fish. There is a really nice bowling alley in town, an outdoor theater and a rodeo every July. Fireworks at the Lake on Fourth of July are absolutely spectacular!
