Your family reunion, or retreat will be a success in this beautiful home so close to the beach path! There are a total of 7 bedrooms (4 kings, 1 queen and 5 singles, also a futon bed and sleeper sofa) 5.5 bathrooms, three living room areas and two kitchens, one main and one smaller. Lots of privacy and lots of room for togetherness!
Summer 2016 was the first Summer I held family reunions. Everyone had a great time, the flow worked with the large groups and there is togetherness and privacy!
Two homes are connected to provide one large home for your vacation. Reviews are available on both of the homes since they have been rented separately in the past. You will enjoy the convenience of your group sharing one space, under one roof but with all the extra amenities of two homes. (Look at Review for Home 311247)
Your vacation home sits on a beautiful 3/4 acre yard but is within walking distance of all Union Pier has to offer.
There are two outdoor seating areas if teens or twenty-somethings want their own space!
Both homes are decorated in cottage beach style with colorful pottery
and art with a Caribbean or Greek Island feel. Both are airy and open
and have a joyful, vacation feeling. As the owner, I make sure you will have nice linens and all of the amenities of home.
The beach path is in front of the home next door !
You can walk a short way for muffins, spectacular sunsets/sunrise and a close drive to the dunes, wineries and casual or fine dining.
We are becoming well known for our wineries, breweries and other
artisan and home grown goods.
Many families are happy with the beautiful beach, the home and hanging out in the yard but if you are interested, the area boasts some wonderful art galleries, natural beauty, and is close to Chicago and Notre Dame.
On the weekends, Skip's European Market with the bounty of the nearby farms is only two blocks away!
Once you stay in Union Pier, you will see why they call this area the Hamptons of the Midwest!
Originally from Chicago, I moved to New England in my thirties, when my I returned to be part of my nephews young lives.
I searched the Midwest trying to find a beach town reminiscent of Cape Code and finally found Union Pier. Both my family and many others have many fond family memories in this home.
I have been happy to share it with visitors from around the country.
You will love your stay!
Kathleen MacArthur purchased this house in 2008
Because you can not find a wonderful large space that will still give you privacy so close to the beach. Beautiful but cozy decor, 3/4 acre yard. Just a beautiful, special space.
So close to the lake, yet you have a large back yard. Walk to get your morning coffee and muffins. Beautiful garden, dunegrasses, and Lakeshore Road is one of the most beautiful blocks around!
My family and I had an outstanding time at Kathleen's place. We were there for my Mom's 70th birthday reunion part with all the kids, brother, aunt and grandkids. Having 'both' places worked out well with our family. The beach is a 5 minute walk from the house and was very convenient. There are some pretty steep steps to get to the beach. Speaking of the beach, we had some great waves and the nightly sunsets were fantastic. Kathleen was very attentive and was quite the gracious host with different suggestions on what to do / where to eat. The backyard was perfect for catching up with our family from all over the country. This place worked out perfectly for us...
This place worked great for our large family group of 20 (5 couples & 10 kids from 13 yrs down to 2 months) and one dog. Every couple had their own bedroom (with comfy beds!) & bathroom - very nice. The area outside is great for cooking on the grill, games, eating and for having a fire. The kitchen is well stocked with cookware and spacious fridge. Just a short 1-2 blocks to a very nice sandy beach on the lake with stunning sunsets. We also walked to the local gelato shop several times! And just a short drive to lots of activities like cherry-picking, fishing, the dunes & other fun family (& adult) things to do. It had everything we needed and our deposit was returned very quickly. We felt lucky to have found a place perfect for our large group; we hope to use it again!
As vacation rental owners ourselves, we are very aware of the incredible effort it takes to keep a home well furnished, clean and in good repair. This home hits all the marks in many ways:
It is roomy and nicely furnished. We all remarked on the very nice artwork throughout the house.
The beds are very comfortable.
The kitchen is large and very well appointed -- there were even wineglasses and good knives!
The beautiful deck has lots of comfortable dining and relaxing choices.
We had deer in the back yard every morning while we enjoyed our coffee.
It is very, very clean and, aside from a few small maintenance issues which were quickly addressed, in good repair.
It's a short walk to the beach, and close to lots of good places to eat, wineries, and other attractions.
The owner, Kathleen, was friendly and attentive in the rental process and while we were there.
As an owner, I am probably pickier than some -- but here are a few "cons": When we arrived there was someone else's wilted leftover salad, uncovered in the serving bowl, still in the refrigerator. Not awful, but still a little gross -- and we wondered if the refrigerator had been wiped out before our arrival.
The first two nights we were there, there were no lightbulbs in the light fixtures on the front of the house. It was a real safety issue. That being said, when we expressed our concern to Kathleen she had it fixed the same day.
Several of the lamps and light fixtures were also missing bulbs.
We could not get the gas fireplace to work when we first arrived. Kathleen came quickly the next morning and had a repairman there within minutes.
There are no towel bars in 2 of the bathrooms.
One of the sofas shown in the photos here is no longer in the living room. Not a big deal, but it would've been nice for our group of 7 to have had a few more places to "sit soft."
My biggest issue came after our rental. Kathleen was extremely slow in returning our deposit. She even suggested that we might be liable for damages we did not create -- issues that were existing when we arrived. As vrbo owners we are VERY conscientious renters, so it was a bit offensive to be unjustly accused. We were planning a return visit with other friends to explore wineries, but are now not as likely to return.
My advice? Stay here, enjoy the beautiful home, but document the condition upon arrival and departure. And be prepared to wait for your refund.
Our group of four families (8 adults, 8 girls, aged 3-13) had a fantastic time at Kathleen's house! Very relaxed and casual, yet comfortable with four king beds and ample space for children in the kids room and on futons. The outdoor space is excellent and spacious (3 grills!) and the interior is very comfortable. Not at all stuffy or pretentious.
The in-law apartment was perfect for the family with a three year old, who needed a little downtime and separation from the bigger kids. Do know though that the second bedroom of the in-law apt. looks out on the deck - so not a great choice for early-to-bed kids in parents are hanging out on the patio late in the evening.
Our big group has rented elsewhere in Union Pier, but I think we've finally found the perfect place for us! Thanks Kathleen - hope to see you again next summer!
Enjoyed the bedroom layout of the home - 3 bedrooms in the main house with king beds and a kids room with plenty of space for them all to be together. The coach house was perfect for other friends that came for part of the week. The backyard is spacious for games (bring your own). It's a short 5 minute walk to the beach with about 25 steps - bring your own wagon to haul your beach stuff. Also this house is dog-friendly, but the public beach you have access to does not allow dogs. There is a nice large farmers market with produce and crafts at the end of the street. Very enjoyable stay and homeowner was responsive during our stay.
Thanks so much for allowing us to use your home for our family vacation. We had a great time and found the houses to be very spacious and accommodating. Having the adjacent house provided the extra space we needed for our large group. We had plenty of room, the beds were very comfortable, and the patios were great. Enjoyed visiting the nearby wineries and breweries. The beach was very nice and clean and the sunsets were fantastic. We spent most evenings enjoying a fire on the patio after viewing the sunsets. Thanks again for your hospitality and checking in with us to make sure we had everything we needed.
Beautiful Harbor Country, the Hamptons of the Midwest.
Beaches lined with dunes, cottages as you would see on Cape Cod, wonderful restaurants, biking, hiking and antiquing. Just 'being.' Only 1 hour and fifteen minutes from downtown Chicago and 35 minutes from South Bend.
