About the property

2 bedroom, full bathroom with huge walk in shower, sleeps 6

Beautiful River Front Log Cabin Treehouse with the Colorado River running through the back yard. This newly remodeled 2 bedroom 1300 sq ft cabin has a wrap around upper deck for spectacular views of the river, gas grill; spacious living room with vaulted ceiling; stone gas fireplace; Mayan family indoor/outdoor hammock; Sleeps 6 king and queen bedrooms and very comfortable pull out sofa bed; fully equipped kitchen with all amenities; large bathroom with huge walk-in stone and glass tiled shower; washer/dryer; ping pong table, picnic table and porch swing on downstairs patio; private dock great for fishing and kayaking. Only 2 miles from historic downtown Bastrop; 25 miles from the airport (AUS) and 40 minute drive from Austin. Golfing, kayaking, bicycling, shopping, fishing, live theater, antique shops, farmer's markets.

Beautiful Log Treehouse: We bought this cabin in the summer of 2009 and feel so fortunate to be able to share it with guests and friends and family. All three of our kids (now grown) love coming here to kayak, fish, golf, bird watch, relax and explore with their families. Our cabin is nestled high up in Pecan, Sycamore, Mimosa and Redbud trees. The view from the upper deck is fantastic. Great for bird watching. We hear the owls at night and watch red tailed hawks make nests and raise their babies. We have left the chicken coop standing as some day we hope to retire here and raise a small flock. You can't beat this for a perfect vacation spot whether you're wanting adventure or relaxation.

Most Historic Town in Texas: Bastrop is known as the 'most historic small town in Texas'. Historic Main Street has lots of interesting shops great for hunting antiques, great restaurants, live music in the evenings and a good old down home environment. There are an abundance of parks, several excellent golf courses, places to rent bikes and kayaks, live theater at the Bastrop Opera House and incredible historic homes. We're only 40 minutes from Austin and 30 minutes from the Austin Bergstrom Airport

About Steve Smith and Linda Scott

Steve and I (Linda) live in Austin, TX. Steve has a tile installation business in Austin and I am a counselor. Steve was born in west Texas. I'm from New Jersey but have lived more than half my life in Texas. Our children were all born in Houston. We love Austin and the surrounding area especialy Bastrop and may retire there one day.

Steve Smith and Linda Scott purchased this cabin in 2009

Why Steve Smith and Linda Scott chose Bastrop

We were so lucky to find this incredible cabin on the Colorado River in Bastrop that was previously owned by a friend of my sister. Once we saw how beautiful and peaceful it was we couldn't believe our good luck. We fell in love! It's such an incredible place for our family to gather. We fish, swim, kayak, ride bicycles, play ping pong and, oh yes, completely relax from the stresses of our busy lives.

What makes this cabin unique

The back yard has a private dock where you can sit and fish or launch a small boat or kayak. The cabin is kept immaculately clean. It's so spacious with vaulted ceilings in the living room. The Mayan family hammock is always up inside the cabin but can easily be hooked up on the upper deck. It's hard to find a more peaceful experience than having breakfast or coffee on the deck overlooking the river.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Linda created a warm, clean and welcoming home for our stay. The cabin's kitchen, living room and bedrooms were spacious. We really enjoyed sitting on the dock on the Colorado River to relax. The river banks in April were lush and verdant.

Planes, Trains, Automobiles, and Roaches.

Hubby and I stayed here for 4 nights while waiting to move into our new home in Bastrop. I try to be honest when writing reviews, so I will list the pros and cons of this listing.

Pros: Indeed a beautiful cabin...inside. Wood from top to bottom, great shower, comfy beds, all appliances in working order. Clean sheets and towels. Plenty of dishes and other kitchen items. Relaxing great room furniture. Fast internet.

Cons: Located in a run down part of town, with roads leading to cabin so rutted and unpaved, that one needs an off-road vehicle to arrive. I would not want to try to drive there in rainy weather or one would be stranded. Upon first glance, the stairs and decking need refinishing, the greenery around the place trimmed back, and the trash picked up in the yard. While situated on the banks of the Colorado, we did not find it pretty, as the river appeared to be a stagnant large pond. Noise was the biggest issue: the drone of small aircraft, train tracks a block away that are still is use, and the constant road noise from 71/21. This all noticeable inside the home...much louder outside. Neighbors dogs barked continuously all through the day and night. The windows are filthy both inside and out. We picked up/killed 6 very huge roaches. There is no TV, which is noted in the listing...but way at the bottom. Hubby was really mad that I didn't notice this issue before booking and paying.

I would not recommend this property to anyone having difficulty with stairs. It is a long hike, especially when lugging items up.

After reading reviews, I was much disappointed with this cabin and its location.

Bottom line: would I stay here again? No.

Owner's Response: Steve and I are glad to hear that you enjoyed many things about our beautiful cabin: wood top to bottom, kitchen with all amenities, great shower, comfy beds and furniture, clean sheets and towels and fast internet. We are sorry to hear that you did not enjoy the outside environment, which we love. Although there is a train nearby, in all the years we have had the cabin, we have heard one train go by and no airplanes. And honestly we have never seen a roach in the cabin. We are sorry for any noise that disturbed you. We strive to keep the cabin grounds clean, mowed with shrubs, plants appropriately trimmed. Steve loves a pristine park like look. I prefer a slightly "wilder" look but he tends to win out. You are correct that a few feet of road needs repair so thank you for bringing that to our attention. We will fix that in a few days. The road still allows easy access to the cabin although it is helpful to drive slowly. The cabin is high off the ground as our photos indicate. If about 15 stairs are a problem, we are probably not the best place for you to stay. We wish you happy and healthy holidays and a safe move to Bastrop. Linda and Steve

Loved it! Only wish we had it longer!

Very beautiful location. Comfortable and clean log cabin with lots of charm and all necessities. Breathtaking views of the Colorado River. Bastrop is a super cute little town with lots of live music and Austin is a short drive away and Gruene is not too long a trek! We will be back again and again!

Amazing Log Treehouse Cabin

  • 5 of 5

This treehouse cabin was just beautiful!! It was soooo quiet next to the river. The inside is just beautiful--bedrooms are so spacious as well as the bathroom. My husband couldn't join us, but I can't wait to go back again when he can come. My daughter and her family who live in Austin just loved it and want to go back some day, too. The town of Bastrop is a quaint little town and can't wait to go back again and explore the area more. Thanks so much for sharing your beautiful home with us!

Bastrop Cabin for Texas Antique Week

  • 5 of 5

Traveled to Texas for my 60th birthday and Antique Week at Round Top. Steve and Linda have really put the attention into thinking through every guest need. Tucked away on the edge of the Colorado River, their cabin accommodated our group of four in comfort. The weather was hot and humid but the AC and amenities helped us forget the swelter as soon as you entered. Comfy beds, pleasant views and a more than fully equipped kitchen were all a plus.

We had selected this VRBO because of it's proximity to Round Top but found the community of Bastrop to have an exceptional history and friendly folks. Main Street is turn of the century but packed with good food, drink and music but just the other side of the river is great highway access and about every big box store you'd possibly need.

Thanks again for the accommodations and a great respite.
