My husband grew up in the Finger Lakes and always wanted to return to the 'calm', so we visited in 2002. It took one week to decide to buy property here, and we began the three year experience of building our own unique home away from home. Since we are builders by profession, it was not too difficult to make the decision. Our kids were grown, and we really loved the peace and quiet that this place provided. Our home really does reflect the happy part of ourselves, the simple way we look at life. We hope you find the comfort level you need here, at your home away from home.
The Owner purchased this chateau / country house in 2005
We loved to visit wine country in the Napa Valley and longed for that kind of beauty here in the east. This property was quite a discovery! So we built this home ourselves, with our own two hands, on the weekends. It took us three years. We both grew up in the country, my husband here in the Finger Lakes, myself in western PA. The city life had gotten to us!
There are no other houses or cottages visible in any direction on this property, affording exceptional privacy. Conveniently located so close to Watkins Glen, a quick trip to the store for a forgotten item is not an issue. The brand new Finger Lakes Distillery is just across the road (Rt.414), and wineries are less than a mile away. Some of the finest restaurants in the area are located on this Route 414 also, just a short distance from the house.
We have stayed at this house twice, first for our own wedding a few years back and this time for our friends' wedding. Both times with a pretty full house. It's a great place for a medium-sized crew of family or friends, with a huge yard and big enough common areas inside for everyone to be together. It's also in a perfect location to explore the best restaurants and wineries of Seneca's east side.
On both of our stays the house was very well maintained and check in and out were smooth. Greg was easy to deal with and responsive, but we did't really have any problems to put him to the test. The kitchen is large and well outfitted so it's possible to cook fairly ambitiously if you wish, a nice feature if you are staying for a few days. The bedrooms are distributed over three levels which gives both varying degrees of accessibility and a fair bit of privacy. While it's a larger house than my wife and I usually need for our visits to the area, it's the first place we think of for a group.
We have stayed here for the past five years during NASCAR week. The house is spacious and can easily accommodate multiple families. The deck off the kitchen is great for morning coffee and the deck off the livingroom is great for a glass of wine as the sun sets. The air conditioning died on Sunday when it was 90 degrees. I called Greg and he had someone there in an hour and we had air conditioning in a few hours. Two years ago, there were ground bees near the driveway. We called Greg and he had them taken care of that day. House is always clean for us and Greg handles any issues promptly. Sun set view is fantastic from the deck with a glass of Fingerlakes wine or beer! New hot tub is also very nice on cooler evenings!
We stayed recently and there is no view of the lake except on the third floor bedroom. Trees have grown and are blocking the view. Lake is much further down gravel road. When we arrived we noticed a strong sulphur smell which did not go away until two days before we left. We were there two weeks. It was especially horrific in the master shower and the kitchen sink. Also when we arrived, the oven was covered with grease and had not been cleaned. The drawers were filled with some sticky substance that had been spilled inside them and many of the pots and pans were not well cleaned. The handles and many of the fronts of the kitchen cabinets were also sticky. Spider webs were under the lips of the steps going to the 2nd floor and areas needed dusting. The rugs had been swept but had spots all over them and were in need of a cleaning. Lightbulbs were out and needed to be replaced. The entire home needed a deep cleaning. Future renters should be aware that you are responsible for taking out all trash. There is no trash pickup. Also, there are not sufficient coverings on the windows to block the early morning sunshine. There is no automatic garage door opener so you have to lift it up by hand....from the inside since there is no handle on the outside. All this being said, the layout of the home is very nice and can well accommodate three families or couples, but the upkeep is questionable. There are managers on site but all this should have been noticed and taken care of before we arrived. You also have to make your beds when you arrive. We have rented over 20 homes from VRBO and this is the first home that we have had to make the beds and take the trash off property. Even though the kitchen was not clean when we arrived as well as the other issues, we were still charged the cleaning fee which at $150 was ridiculous for two people who kept the place in much better condition than it was presented to us.
I recommend this home to anyone who has multiple family members to host. This is a wonderful comfortable home that met all our needs. The master bedroom suite is beautiful and is on the first floor so it is accessible to those who are challenged by stairs. The views are beautiful. The beds comfortable and plenty of privacy. I will definitely stay here again.
The description of this home and property is not exaggerated. It was very comfortable for 6 adults and an infant and could have accommodated more people easily. Each family had their own full bathroom, which made it nice. We had plenty of room to entertain local family members who visited us. The kids were especially thrilled with the hot tub, but the adults got their share of enjoyment out of it, too. Everything we needed was provided in this lovely home, but Watkins Glen was only 10 minutes away if we wanted anything. The new Grist Iron Brewery opened almost across the street on Route 414 and having that so close was a bonus. Of course wineries abound in the area, too. Guests should be aware that you do have to travel about 1/4 mile down a gravel road to get to the home, so vehicles with good ground clearance are the best to use while staying at the house. Regular vehicles can work ok as long as you go very slowly over the speed bump.
There was plenty of room both indoors and out with a huge private lot, deck and a porch. A boat launch was mentioned as an amenity, but you would need to get more info about that from the owner. We didn't find anything usable for that purpose, but we didn't have a boat, either.
The AC was very welcome since we were there during a hot weather week. Nights cooled down to comfortable temperatures, so breakfast on the porch was very pleasant. There were great lake views from one of the upstairs bedrooms and peek-a-boo views between the trees from the lower levels. However, the sunset views were spectacular.
The only downside was the extra fee we had to pay for cleaning. Not sure why that wasn't included in the price.
I would highly recommend this home for a wonderful Finger Lakes vacation.
Wow! What a house! It is spacious and well maintained with lots of deck space. We enjoyed cooking family style meals most nights and lounging in the hot tub after a long day of hiking or touring wineries.
After five years of trying different places on Seneca, this looks like a good place to stay next year, especially with a group of people.
Short distance to the famous Watkins Glen Race Track, Corning Museum of Glass, Finger Lakes National Forest, Cornell University, Ithaca College, Hobart, pick your own apples, strawberries, cherries, peaches, blueberries, grapes, and of course, wine tasting!
