Overview

About the property

Farmhouse, 4 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 8-10)

Anytime of the year, the house is available for two day, weekly or monthly stays. It sits on a tranquil, 27 acre former farm and is conveniently located just six miles from both Hunter and Windham mountains. Your country escape for the skier, golfer, trout fishermen or growing family awaits you. There are fields, walking trails, mountain views and an abundance of wildlife for one to see on the property. If skiing is your thing, this rental is perfect for the entire family.

Outside of the ski season, there are three nearby golf courses so all golfers, bring your clubs! If you simply prefer to unwind, the over-sized country porch is perfect for relaxing and entertaining guests. Fun filled days transition to late afternoons and early evening on the beautiful porch, enjoying a cocktail and great food. Wildlife such as turkey, deer, rabbits and ducks can be appreciated by all. The rambling brook makes for a great night's sleep or for a carefree nap stream side or on the porch. Visit during the winter months and enjoy sitting around the wood stove with that hot cup of chocolate. This makes for a perfect break from a cold winter's day and fun in the snow.

The house is an 1856 post and beam farmhouse typical of the era. It has been fully restored with special attention to period details.

The first floor consists of a mud room with an oak bench and brick flooring, a lovely country kitchen, a large living room with wood burning stove, a comfortably sized dining room and a small additional bedroom. Additionally, a washer / dryer room, for those extended stays, is located right off the first floor bathroom. Wide plank floors throughout and the wood beams in the house have been fully exposed for that pure colonial look. The bathroom has a large, claw foot tub from the early 20th century that has been restored. It makes for that perfect, hot bath with some rich, sea salts to relax and rejuvenate one's inner self.

The second floor consists of three bedrooms that overlook the apple trees and fields of the property. A second floor bathroom is a must and this one has been nicely renovated. The house sleeps eight comfortably so it can be shared by one large family or two smaller families.

About Sofia Sinaheris Rivera

My husband and I purchased this property in 2001. We have done a complete renovation over the last nine years. We paid special detail to maintaining it's colonial look with exposed beams, claw foot tub, antique farmhouse sink and a large country porch.

Sofia Sinaheris Rivera purchased this farmhouse in 2001

Why Sofia Sinaheris Rivera chose Hunter Mountain

We chose the area of the Northern Catskills because of it's close proximity to World Class skiing at Hunter and Windham mountains. It's only 2.5 hours from NYC which is ideal for weekend trips. We especially liked the house and property because it sits on the East Kill Creek which is a trout fed stream. It has many swimming holes to swim in. There are three golf courses within 10 minutes. There are an abundance of hiking trails in and around the property. There are great restaurants and bars serving a variety of foods including Italian, French, Mexican and a micro brewery in Windham. There is even a local vineyard which has weekend wine tasting available.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Fresh water swimming on the property. Local skiing is within 10 minutes. Rolling fields, mountain views and walking / hiking trails are plentiful. Sipping a morning or early afternoon coffee on the front porch overlooking the fields and stream. Barbecuing on the porch at night while under the stars. Star gazing and viewing the Milky Way galaxy.

Loved this house!

  • 5 of 5

We arrived with 6 adults and 3 kids all wet and hungry from a very warm day of training at Windham. We had to be back at the mountain by 6:30 the next morning. The location and size of the house was perfect. We were able to set up a tuning station outside to prep skis, make dinner, get showered and rest for 2 intense days of racing. It was great.

Not a place to stay with children!

  • 1 of 5

The house is old and in need of some TLC. We could not check in early because of the cleaning service (which was fine) but upon arrival there were large cobwebs in all the windows, hairs in the sink, and a large ball of hair on the steps. About 1/2 hour after our arrival we found our first wasp which was especially concerning because we have a 9 month old and a 2 year old touching everything! I emailed the owner and she told me to use the wasp/hornet spray--they had about 8 cans which, to me, indicates this is a known problem. Throughout our 2 day stay we killed about 10 wasps, found in every room, making it impossible to relax. In addition, the downstairs toilet was clogged from the time we got there and the grill broke and when I asked if someone could fix it I did not receive a response. My 2 year old was going to use the crib, but only 3 corners were secured (held together with zip ties), the 4th corner was separated and a child could easily get an arm or leg stuck in it.

I think the location is nice, convenient to the mountain, but the house needs some updating and a deep cleaning. I appreciated the owners quick responses when we first arrived, but I was frustrated by her lack of response when I asked for someone to fix the grill and when I told her we could not keep up with the number of wasps in the house. It might be OK for adults (as long as no one is allergic to wasps), but definitely not a place for kids.

Owner's Response: I am sorry that you did not enjoy your stay with us. As travelers can see, we have received all 5’s (since we began renting) aside from three reviews of which two were 4’s so we are disappointed in the commentary and would like to address issues: - Our house is a mid 1850’s farmhouse that was renovated not long ago so character, charm and setting are what people want when they stay there. - Our cleaning service always does a great job as our reviews indicate. - Early checkins are always accommodated, when possible, but as discussed with you before your arrival, when same day rentals occur (one group is leaving and new one entering), they are not possible. - Toilet issues were a new revelation as that was not discussed by the next group of tenants who stayed there immediately after you left. - We keep insect and bee spray in the mudroom of house at all times as we have renters all year round so it is needed especially in the summer months. There were not 8 cans of bee spray there. - Our house gets treated monthly by a reputable, pest control contractor, as most homes in the farmland of upstate do. This was discussed with you when you were experiencing an issue with bees so we are on top of it and you were the first person who complained about it as all can see in our reviews. - The grill worked fine for the next group of tenants who checked in Monday, the day after you left. - The crib has worked fine for 7.5 years of tenants including our own children who slept many nights in it and moreover, the condition of it was discussed with you prior to your arrival when you inquired about it. - We received a 5/5 review the weekend after you stayed with us.

Private escape!

  • 4 of 5

We had a great stay at the house. We had 9 people, a dog, and and a small infant at the house for a Thanksgiving getaway. The house was perfectly suitable for our needs. We particularly appreciated the ample cooking supplies and the beautiful finishing inside the house. The owner went above and beyond to lay out Thanksgiving themed table appointments and made us feel home. The property itself is conveniently located between Hunter and Windham mountains and offered plenty of privacy. I would highly recommend this property to anyone.

Great Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time here over a long weekend. The property is secluded, which is what we were looking for. We came in late summer, and had a great time being generally outdoorsy, and at night we cozied up by the outdoor fire pit and roasted smores. Definitely a weekend to remember. The owner was also quick to respond with any questions we had.

Beautiful House, Great Location

  • 4 of 5

We had a great time in this Farmhouse. The 8 of us, two families of four, each with two children under the age of 6, enjoyed the expansive yard, secluded location, picturesque stream (which was a little low in August due to a dry summer), and spacious house. We had some slight issues with upkeep, which is the reason for four stars, but I am sure that the owners have taken care of those and that you will love your stay. I would recommend to friends and relatives, and we are considering a repeat next summer. I can imagine it is great in the winter as well, as it is centrally located between Hunter and Windam Mountains and relatively close to Bellayre.

The Perfect Country Rental!

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I treated my nephew and his new wife to a surprise Wedding Gift country weekend. After a great deal of research, I found the perfect place! The house was as described: charming, spacious, secluded but close enough to town, historic but with the important updates, clean, and had a wonderful open country renovated kitchen, which was important as we're all food lovers, and cooked all weekend. The sizeable covered porch was a wonderful bonus, with enough space for eating meals, grilling, and chilling out on adirondack chairs with a cocktail. Even the beds were very comfortable, which is unusual in many rentals. The place was homey and comfortable, but didn't have that crammed with personal items, overly lived-in, feel that many rentals have--the feeling that you're almost infringing on someone else's space. The host, Sofia, was very communicative and helpful (even while she was vacationing in Europe during our stay).

The only drawback was the water pressure in the kitchen faucet. Although the hot water was ample, the kitchen pressure made cleaning up after meals difficult. Also, because of dry weather, the stream was very low and not easily reachable. We knew it wasn't a swimming hole per se, but we hoped we would be able to cool off, and splash around in it (it was in the high 80s-low 90s). Creating a path down to the stream would be helpful (and, obviously, there's nothing you can do about mother nature and dry conditions)! That said, the house inside stayed remarkably cool during the day.

Overall, this is a wonderful place to enjoy country living and I'd highly recommend it. We'll definitely be back!
