Durham House Rental Photos and Description

Private Home Nestled in Forest (2+ BR, 1 bath, Sleeps 1-6)

This charming home nestled in beautiful oak forest at the end of a residential street in Durham, NC near the Eno River, and approximately 10 minutes from Duke University, has all the comforts of home. View the forest through the large skylights in the high ceiling above the open living/dining area. Enjoy forest views through every window in the home and from the two private decks. Hike nature trails beginning within 150 ft of the home and extending to and through the Eno River State Park. Snuggle up in the evenings as you watch a free movie from Amazon Prime on the new 32" LED smart TV. Be near, but feel far, from everything except nature!

The master bedroom has a Queen-size Sleep Number bed, blackout curtains and a private, enclosed deck off the back of the house. The second bedroom has a full-size bed with a sateen comforter set, blackout curtains and two windows into the forest. The 400 square foot loft has a large forest-view skylight and is outfitted with two desks and reading chairs, as well as a futon sofa/bed. The loft provides an additional semi-private sleeping space (there is a door). Linens are provided for the full-size loft futon bed and a twin air mattress upon request. The bathroom is newly remodeled and the kitchen is fully equipped with all that you need to enjoy cooking and baking during your stay (including a new side-by-side refrigerator, a new glass-top stove/oven, a dishwasher, coffee maker, toaster and basic pantry items such as salt and pepper, spices, flour, sugar, olive oil, basic condiments, tea, honey, and coffee to start your first morning). We strive to provide all of the comforts of home including high-speed wireless internet, a charging station, a hair dryer, ironing board and iron, shampoo and conditioner, first aid kit, hand lotion, zip lock bags, saran wrap, food storage containers and more.

This home is ideal for visiting scholars, couples and families of all varieties, parents visiting adult children at Duke or in the general area, patients/families visiting or receiving treatment at Duke Medical Center (ask about our discounts for medical visits), solo travelers and anyone seeking some peaceful time.

We welcome families with small children (we have two of our own!). There is a play area in the side yard, which we put together for our daughter on her second birthday--it includes a small slide, a children's picnic table and a sand box. A gate for the bottom of the stairs, a twin air mattress, pack-n-play, high chair, and children's toys and books are also available upon request.

About The Owner

This was our home for years. We were married next to the Eno River within walking distance of the home and our reception was held on the deck afterward (in April when the azaleas are in full bloom)! With the birth of our second child we moved to nearby Chapel Hill. We love this beautiful forest location so much that we couldn't bear to part with the home and instead decided to share it with others. We still visit often.

The Owner purchased this house in 1998

What makes this house unique

We love to walk the miles of nature trails that begin at the end of the driveway and lead to the Eno River. The Eno River trails are a favorite in our family- they provided the backdrop for our wedding and we still walk them often!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you again for a wonderful stay in your forest home! You have been more than helpful and welcoming. Letting us use your pack and play, high chair, etc. has made this place feel more like home. If we ever come back to Durham, we will book here again.

Outstanding Woodland Vacation Home, we look forward to our next visit

  • 5 of 5

Everything you need to experience the best example of a Rental by Owner is waiting for you here. Laura and Brad have found a wonderful setting to prepare a vacation home for their renters.

We found the home very clean and stocked with everything needed to enjoy a week away without feeling like we were in a strange place. Towels were stacked up neatly, the kitchen and bath actually sparkled. We were greeted by a kind personalized note welcoming us, along with a " Welcome to The Forest" 3 ring binder that explained every aspect of the home.

We slept wonderfully in the queen size sleep number bed, while our grandson slept in the next room in a pack and play left out for us ( along with a high chair). There were some food items in place to start us out, and a grocery store within a 3 minute drive.

The home is nestled in the woods, but incredibly close to everything we needed, we found it was perfect to go shopping, then spent the week cooking at "home". We were even able to comfortably entertain several dinner guests, try that in a " hotel suite". Stocked bath, kitchen, laundry, barbecue and living room, all waiting in an idyllic setting.

We were visiting family in the area, and have been coming to Durham for 20 years, this time we enjoyed our visit like never before and look forward to returning.

Lovely house in the woods

  • 5 of 5

This cabin/house, comfortably slept two couple. We cooked breakfast and ate out the rest of the time, though I really wanted to grill out, we ran out of time.

The house was easy to find and had all the amenities one could want. Communication was clear at all times.

Little House in the Woods

  • 5 of 5

Our second time here -- just as wonderful as the first. This wonderful, well-equipped home at the end of the road in a peaceful forest neighborhood has everything you could want and more. We have stayed at many larger vacation rentals that didn't have half the ammenities as this one. It is well maintained and extremely clean. The kitchen has everything needed to make a wonderful dinner to enjoy inside or out. The main bed is very comfy, and the little deck off that bedroom brings the outdoors in. There's a nice play area for those with small children. An easy trail at the end of the road leads through the woods; you can rock-hop across a small creek to continue the walk. It is close to restaurants, hiking, Duke, etc. One thing we particularly enjoyed this trip was the Riverwalk in nearby Hillsborough. It's a 2m walk (part paved, part boardwalk) along the Eno River with many signs on the history of the area. A prominent feature is the amazing new stickworks house. It's made entirely of twigs and is a sight to see. This artist has done stickworks in Scotland, Japan, and Sweden as well as many spots in the USA.

We hope to return again and enjoy this gem in the near future, especially since it is so convenient and close to the retirement community where we plan to move in a year or two.
