“Mackerel scales and mare’s tails ships fly high sails” is an old fisherman’s saying that refers to the weather and fishing conditions. Generations of fishermen have called Boothbay Harbor home and that heritage is what makes this town unique. When you book a vacation rental with Mackerel Sky, not only are you getting a great place to stay but you are getting the insight of a local fishing family and the satisfaction of knowing that you are helping to continue a way of life that is becoming more and more difficult to sustain. Lobsters fresh from the boat are available to you at dock prices.

The Tibbetts family has lived in the Boothbay Region since the 1700s. Generation after generation have worked as fishermen and boatbuilders. My husband David, and now my son Bradford, are lobstermen. Brad, hopes to one day attend a maritime academy and continue our family seagoing history.
Deanne Tibbetts purchased this apartment in 1992
Boothbay Harbor is a great place to raise a family. During the busy summer season we have all the benefits of larger cities with festivals, art shows, and concerts. In the off season we return to a tightly knit community of families who attend weekend sporting events, attend church, and participate in local fundraising events.
Boothbay Harbor is still a community of businesses owned and operated by local residents. You won't find any large chain restaurants or hotels. Everything here is done on a more personal level. Our rental is a guest house that we use for friends and family. We have renovated it with the intention of someday living in it ourselves. It is furnished with a mixture of antiques and new furniture, local artwork and photography, and in a style that reflects our connection to the sea.
My husband and I spent 4 nights in Boothbay Harbor in this great one bedroom house a block from the wharf. Everything was new, clean and bright and I loved the quilt on the wall. It's an easy walk to the shops and restaurants along the wharf with live music and a friendly atmosphere. If you have time to go exploring a bit this makes a great base for adventures into neighboring areas. We are already discussing a return visit.
My husband and I spent 5 days here. 2 blocks to the center of Boothbay Harbor - Quiet at night - Perfectly outfitted and sparkling clean. We loved the little porch. An excellent choice for a stay in BBH!
Only thing that is not mentioned is that there are cars parked on the property. Not an issue at all to us but was a surprise.
My husband and I just returned from our vacation along the Maine coast and spent four nights in charming Boothbay Harbor at this lovely downtown apartment. The unit is spacious, comfortable and beautifully decorated with a seafaring Maine flavor. We loved being so close to the shops and the harbor and the owners were friendly and welcoming with great suggestions for places to eat and visit. We are already talking about when we might return to this beautiful area and we would definitely stay here again.
My husband and I stayed at this unit over Memorial Day week-end. We have been vacationing in this area for years and have found that we most enjoy staying right in the harbor area. The restaurants and shops are just a few steps away.
The unit was even better than indicated by the listing. The unit is very spacious and beautifully decorated. The bed was super comfortable. The kitchen is fully stocked and ready for any meal if you wish to cook. The owner put a lot of love and attention into this unit and it shows.
The owner was available and very informative for any questions that we had. I hope to be back again soon and would highly recommend this property to anyone looking to stay in the harbor area.
We were the first guests to stay in this one bedroom apartment, although the owners have been renting a similar but smaller apartment above this new one. We were grateful for the owners flexibility in allowing us to stay as they finalized the fit out of their new rental. This did not affect our stay and we benefited as everything was sparkling new. The cottage is within a two minute walk from town, so centrally located but quite and provides convenient parking. The hosts were engaging and responded quickly to any questions we had, they also provided lots of advice about local attractions and places to eat. We would highly this property and would stay there again ourselves.
Boothbay Harbor is a four season destination for outdoor enthusiasts, art and craft collectors, foodies, and history buffs. We have miles of public walking and hiking trails, scenic roadways, rocky shoreline, bays, harbors, and rivers. It is possible to rent a variety of watercraft from personal canoes and kayaks to passenger seats on larger ocean going tour boats all within walking distance. We are fortunate to have the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens just a short drive away.
Boothbay Harbor is home to some very talented fine artists, musicians, and craftspeople. Depending on the season you can participate in a first Friday art walk, catch a concert at the Opera House, or listen to a local band in one of the pubs that are within walking distance. Each Thursday between May and October you can visit the local farmer's market where you will find hand made baskets, fresh cut flowers, artisan cheese and bread, pastries, and locally grown fruits and vegetables.
The Boothbay Harbor area is steeped in history. Formerly a bustling port for steamers and fishing boats our waterfront is filled with glimpses to the past. Visit the local historical society and learn about sardine packing, lobster canning, boat building, art colonies, commercial fishing, and the summer tourism industry.
