You cannot get any closer to the ocean than the location this house offers!! At high tide, the water nearly comes up all the way right up to the porch deck! Check out the live Harborcam from our porch at: https://video.nest.com/live/Dajpa3 !!
This rustic cottage sits 15 feet above high tide, on a working Maine harbor. It is charming, clean and comfortable! The new dock (2011), as well as the deck, are perfect for watching lobster boats, sailboats and yachts come and go. Go for a swim off the dock! Or enjoy a sunset out on the end of the dock. The gulls and sea ducks will entertain you as they bathe in the tidal pool and you may even spot a seal poke his head up as he swims by.
Inside, the cottage has the open stud walls (not insulated) of a traditional Maine summer camp. The main living/dining/kitchen area has a TWO-STORY CEILING with picture windows facing the water, comfy couches and chairs, and a large round dining table. The kitchen is small but well-equipped, and includes a dishwasher, microwave, coffee pot, and toaster.
The bedrooms, one downstairs and two upstairs, are clean and attractively furnished with comfortable beds and comforters. There is a full bathroom on each floor (shower downstairs, and shower with separate tub upstairs), and full-sized washer and dryer on the first floor. Fans and two space heaters are provided.
Downstairs: Living and dining area; kitchen (with dishwasher); master bedroom w/king bed; second downstairs room is a den with a couch, a couple of chairs, a 37' flat sceen TV and DVD player; bathroom with shower; washing machine & dryer. The wood stove is the ONLY source of heat for chilly days but keeps everything super toasty, along with full quilt comforters on all beds. Renters tell us the wood stove is super easy to use!
Upstairs: Bedroom with 2 twin beds; bedroom with queen bed and one (1) twin bed; full bath with shower and separate tub.
From your cottage, immerse yourselves in this beautiful part of the world, watching the shore change with the tides, and exploring the rocks and tidal pools alongside the sea birds. Take in the busy harbor scene from the deck, or rent your a kayak to launch from your very own shoreline!
Explore the shops and restaurants (some gourmet!) of
Southwest Harbor, a small town with the conveniences of library, pharmacy, two grocery stores, hardware store, wine and cheese shop, and post office. Take the children to the Oceanarium where they can hold a star fish and more! Play a round of golf at the Causeway Club.
When you are ready to venture a bit further, nearby Bar Harbor is full of restaurants and shops, as well as a museum and movie theater, and an island you can walk to at low tide. Tiny Northeast Harbor has elegant galleries and restaurants, and a lovely harbor.
Acadia National Park is breathtaking with hundreds of miles of biking and walking trails for all degrees of ability, and a fresh water lake for swimming. Or enjoy its beauty by driving to the top of Cadillac Mountain and along the eastern cliffs of the island. See the striking Bass Harbor Light House. The free Islander Bus will take you to many points in the park, as well as Bar Harbor.
You'll never want to leave this corner of paradise!

For years we have loved sailing among and exploring the islands, hiking in Acadia, and enjoying the unique beauty of the Maine coastline. Mount Desert has all these things, and Southwest Harbor is our favorite town on the island.
The house is quiet, cozy and comfortable with a fresh simplicity. The deck and picture windows allow us to watch the ever-changing harbor scenes. We can smell the sea air and wander among the rocks and tidal pools. And we're close to all that Acadia, Mount Desert, and the ocean has to offer!
I am almost reluctant to submit this review, in that doing so would risk getting the word out about how nice this place is. We thoroughly enjoyed our week here. The house is ideally located in SW Harbor, on the quiet side of MDI and the associated crowds in Bar Harbor, Cadillac Mtn, etc. the house itself is quiet, private, clean, comfortable, and well-appointed. However, it is not luxurious in the traditional sense (the luxuries here are the quiet, views, rocking chairs on the deck, breeze off the water, and so on). The beds are comfortable which is key. There is fast internet and a nice TV, although we never turned the TV on given all the outdoor activities. The dock is a great bonus and we used it extensively for kayaking in the harbor. Very thankful to have found this place.
This is our fourth (or so) summer week in the SW Harbor-on-the-harbor house and it was every bit as splendid as the last three. The setting is serene, the house is wonderfully comfortable, Southwest Harbor/Acadia is an ideal spot. The fact that we keep wanting to go back summer upon summer to this very same spot probably says it all.
We had an amazing vacation last month in Southwest Harbor. The house is situated right on the water looking north across the harbor toward Cadillac Mountain and the other peaks. We spent a lot of time hiking around Acadia National Park. The views were extraordinary! This house has everything we wanted. The kitchen, dining and living areas all look out on the water. The house has a 2 bedrooms upstairs and a master bedroom on the main floor. Location is only a few minutes from the village which has lots of small shops and good grocery stores and restaurants. The views in the late afternoon at sunset looking out at the harbor and mountains were spectacular. we loved this place.
What a perfect location and great accommodations on MDI. It is a true Maine cabin; rustic with incredible views. The harbor has a lot of activity, just like the web cam showed. (Yes, I looked at the camera before I arrived.) Southwest Harbor is quiet but with enough shops and restaurants to satisfy. Plenty of room, great WiFi and cable TV. The kitchen is well appointed and well lit. Can't wait to get back there!
This place was exactly as described (no unwelcome surprises): comfortable, well-furnished, ideally located. The view is priceless! Our party was 6 adults (3 couples) and we had enough space to gather, or spread out if needed. The owner gave us abundant suggestions for activities which were all helpful. He stayed in contact beforehand and after we arrived to ensure we had everything we needed. I have used VRBO properties several times, but this was by far the best experience. We would certainly return.
I could not have found a more perfect location and accommodation than this one in Southwest Harbor! The cabin was exactly what I was looking for in a true Maine cabin; rustic with views but with every conceivable convenience that you could ask for. I could not have been happier! Southwest Harbor is gorgeous, quiet but with enough shops and restaurants to satisfy any guest. The cabin has plenty of room and the owners made sure that every need is anticipated and satisfied. The kitchen is well stocked, the cabin was immaculate, the wood burning stove was easy to use and provided a lot of ambience. The views from inside and from the porch were magnificent! Acadia National Park is a treasure. My only regret is not having enough time to do it all!
