This charming Saltbox style cottage is located in a small out port called Bauline. Bauline is located at the base of a 1000-foot high mountain where publicly groomed trails will lead you to the summit. This quaint and very clean, ocean front century home has a lovely western view of Conception Bay and the village's lobster/crab fishing port. The Saltbox Cottage is located just 15 minutes from St. John's. Sunsets in Bauline are spectacular, especially while sipping on a cocktail on your own private, 300 square foot patio. Beside the property is a babbling brook that will serenade you to blissful slumber.
Originally built in 1892, the Saltbox is carefully renovated to accommodate modern amenities however; we have attempted to keep a lot of the original character. Notice the stairs leading to the second floor are worn by over 100 years of traffic.
Highlights of the Saltbox:
The Saltbox is a 1500 square foot, 2 story century home on the ocean. This home can sleep up to 4 maximum with 2 bedrooms.
Some of the highlights include:
One full bath, master bedroom facing the ocean with new extra plush king size bed, luxurious down-filled duvet, ultra soft linens, guest bedroom facing the harbour, with two twin, extra long beds.
Powder room, washer, dryer, wireless internet, cable TV, VCR, stereo, large private 300 square foot deck with great panoramic ocean views, with outdoor patio furniture, 2 Muskoka lounge chairs with foot stools, and BBQ. Bright, clean kitchen with breakfast nook, large beautiful antique dining room with seating for 6, and a large living room with windows offering a magnificent view of the ocean from all angles, and a wood-stove. We also offer a fun collection of movies, east coast music and books for you to enjoy.
Please note: The Saltbox is not suggested for the elderly as the staircase, although beautiful, is fairly narrow. Also, the shower does not have a handrail.

Why Julia chose Bauline
Within the quaint little fishing village called Bauline, there sat an old home that required a lot of TLC with endless opportunities to renovate and bring it back to a beautiful home. That is exactly what we have done with the Saltbox.

We just spent an idyllic week at this sweet saltbox in Bauline, Newfoundland. The house was perfect as a base for exploring the Avalon Peninsula. St. John's was only about a 25 minute drive away, which made going out for dinner quite easy, though my husband was nervous about hitting a moose in the dark. (Never even saw one despite looking very hard!) But, on our first morning in the house, we did see a pair of whales swimming in the ocean right off our deck. They hung around most of the day. Magical! The house was clean and tidy, and very nicely decorated with many local nautical items. When we weren't exploring, we enjoyed beautiful sunsets and watching the activity in the small, local fishing harbor just below the house. On our last full day, we were lucky enough to be offered some fresh fish right off the boat to grill that night. Julia, the property manager, was extremely helpful in answering any questions we had. I would heartily recommend this lovely house to any couple coming to explore Eastern Newfoundland. Only caveat would be to know about the narrow, steep stairs to the second floor bedroom, not easy for us at age 72 and 87 to navigate. Otherwise, this cottage is pure heaven.
Thank you very much for the wonderful review, we are so glad you and your wife had a great vacation, and we would love to have you come stay with us again! We have updated our description portion to inform future guests that although the staircase was left to reflect the 125 years of wear marks of generations past, they are in fact, a little steep. We are so sorry they were a little difficult.
Great Location, cute house
The Cottage is in the perfect location. Great sunset, peaceful but all the city live a short drive to St. John's (if you want it)
Whale watching from the deck...need I say more?
Nice clean cottage. Perfect for the two of us. Great views, and location.
This property has a magnificent view and the cottage has great character. The king bed was very comfortable and the home was clean. The linen supply was ample. The nearby walking trails were fun and seemed well maintained. Unfortunately we arrived at this cottage directly after another rental in Nova Scotia where we were treated as valued guests. The owners of the NS cottage made sure we had all the information we needed about the cottage, wood stove, appliances, area attractions, restaurants etc. Anything we needed to be comfortable was promptly and happily provided. By stark contrast, the Bauline Saltbox owner/property manager left us feeling unwelcome in the home. They declined to provide firewood, with the explanation that guests didn't use it in the summer even though firewood was listed in the general description of the property. Given that on our arrival, house was cold, it was barely above freezing outside and the pouring rain soaked us just going a few feet to get inside, the owner was asked but declined to provide any firewood. It kind of set the tone for our stay. There was a barbecue but no propane tank. The deck had incredible views but the furniture was too uncomfortable to entice us to spend much time there once the weather improved. Given that the payment for our 2 week stay was all made upfront along with a substantial damage deposit, we had no recourse. We wound up leaving after 5 nights. It really would have taken so little to make us feel comfortable, as though the owner cared about our happiness. We would never go back, nor would we recommend this cottage to anyone. In fact this experience has left us very reluctant to consider any future VRBO rentals.
I am the owner of the Saltbox and appreciate your very detailed review. It has always been our goal to maintain our 5/5 ranking and we find it very disappointing that you did not enjoy your stay. We have maintained an excellent reputation over the past 10 years welcoming guests from all over the world. I will address each of your concerns as we take this very seriously.
1. The prior home owners from your last stay sent you an overview on amenities, appliances etc. Each guests is sent our 10 page welcome letter that clearly outlines all amenities, opening/ closing procedures, area description, FAQ's etc. We ask that all guests read this very carefully and to bring it with them to refer to throughout their stay and ensure they feel welcome in our cottage.
2. You had some difficulty in opening the door. Our welcome letter clearly outlines how to lock and unlock our door. We have never had any guest face issues with this door as it is only 1 year old. We promptly sent our property manager to assist.
3. You had mentioned to us that your feet had become wet while walking from your car to the house. The distance between the parking area to the front door is approx. 20 feet. We apologize if you did become wet. Due to the front of the house being grass, along with heavy rain, occasionally feet could become wet.
4. Cold house. As defined in our welcome letter, we have baseboard heaters in every room that can be manually controlled. In the future, we will make sure that our property manager turns up the heat so that it is comfortable.
5. No Firewood. On the day of arrival, our property manager was not available and so we suggested that a 5 minute drive up the road would produce firewood as all local stores sell firewood. Moving forward, we will ensure that there is always a small starter pack of firewood for your comfort.
6. BBQ with no propane tank. We truly apologize for this inconvenience as our procedure is to always make sure there is 1 propane tank with a full back up. This was our error and will never occur again in the future.
7. Uncomfortable furniture on deck. We immediately replaced everything with 4 new Adirondack/ Muskoka chairs, new patio table and chairs. I am confident that all future guests will continue to enjoy our incredible view.
I truly apologize that you did not experience an enjoyable vacation. We take all reviews very seriously and hope that our responses have clearly addressed all of your concerns.
Amazing view. So clean and comfortable. I would love to return.
The perfect location for our home base. Was able to do daily trips along the coast with a wonderful place to relax and have dinner in the evenings. The view was spectacular!
Amazing Family Vacation
Having never travelled out east before we were really excited to go to Newfoundland. After an exhaustive online search we came across Rob and Francine's Saltbox. The description and pictures online were amazing and when we arrived they were so accurate. The cottage was bright and clean . Its closer to the ocean then you think. Sitting on their deck watching the sunset over the Atlantic was beautiful. The location of the cottage is perfect, 15 minutes away from the airport and St. John's. yet when you're in Bauline you feel like your hours away from the city. The east coast trail is minutes away from the Saltbox where we enjoyed hiking and picking wild blueberries and raspberries! The Saltbox is the perfect location to travel the Irish Loop, Portugal Cove, Signal Hill and Cape Spear. It was nice to come home to the cottage after a full day of site seeing and hiking, making a fire and dinner. The kitchen was also well stocked. We look forward to going back next year as the accommodations were perfect.
Thank again Rob and Francine for sharing your Saltbox with us.
In Bauline NFLD there are many fun things to do, beautiful and interesting things to see. We have listed some local things to do within walking distance from the Saltbox and some very useful suggestions for St. John’s and the surrounding area. You will see that the city of St. John’s is very rich in culture, history, arts and entertainment. Iceberg & Whale Watching: Right from your own private deck you can kick back on a lounge chair, sip on a glass of wine and watch as icebergs and whales pass by. They are in abundance during the months of July and early August especially. Fresh Water Swimming Hole: Located 2 km up the road with a sandy beach and picnic tables. Great for the whole family. The water is very clean and great to enjoy a day of swimming in. Fishing: For all of you fishing fanatics, make sure you bring your gear. Talk to the locals about the fantastic fishing opportunities, they are only too happy to help. You can fish for some tasty “brown trout” in the fishing hole just up the street and catch your evening meal. Or, cast a line off of the rocky point at the little harbor, just a stones throw away and catch some interesting ocean treats. Hiking: Take an invigorating walk to the summit of a 1000-foot high mountain right behind you. There are trails that will lead you to the top but please keep in mind that the path can be quite treacherous at times, it is a great cardio workout for you fitness enthusiasts and please be sure to bring lots of water and perhaps even a light snack to sit and enjoy the view. The hike takes approximately 3 hours up and down. Ask the villagers for directions. Enjoy the local Fishing Community: Bauline is a small, very active fishing village with many of the residents relying heavily on the daily catch to support their livelihood. Throughout the year, if you time it right, you can enjoy different ocean delicacies that are in season such as crab, lobster, squid, and if you are lucky, perhaps some other fresh “catch of the day”. The local fishermen are a very friendly bunch, strike up a conversation and share in some interesting, entertaining stories. Running, Walking and Fitness: For any running-enthusiast, we challenge you to take the “Bauline Line” hill challenge! It is the road that you take to the Saltbox which doesn’t seem too steep when you are driving down but wait until you start walking / running up! It is a great challenge for anyone looking for that extra “shock” to the system. For those of you who would like to enjoy this walk at a more leisurely pace, please make sure to bring water and don’t push it too hard. You will see we also have a light bar bell weight set and fitness videos in the living room, please feel free to use them. Berry Picking: Bauline has a 1000 foot mountain that surrounds our tiny village and at the base of this mountain, there are beautiful fields full of assorted berries that are 100% edible. Hikers will quickly notice the wide variety of berries. Cranberries, Bake-apples, Blueberries and Partridge berries are abundant and have traditionally made up an important part of the Newfoundland diet. Whale, Bird & Iceberg Watching Tours: There are many boat tour operators in Newfoundland.
