Why Jim and Nancy Kendrick chose Ridgway
We chose to build the Caretaker's Cabin because we love the land, river and mountains here and we own a home and 5 acres right next door across the creek. It is so beautiful and has a hillside to the north that is covered in lupine flowers with delightful perfume every May and June. We offer this cabin to people to enjoy the quiet tranquility of nature in this special spot. We feel the seclusion, quiet and privacy of the area should appeal to people who want to 'get away from it all.' It is the only piece of property in Ouray County that is truly on the river out of town for rent.
What makes this Cabin unique
The Caretaker's Cabin is unique because it is right on the Uncompahgre River and the seclusion and privacy allows one to meditate, be at peace and one with nature without being too far removed. There is still TV and news, but no phones unless you bring your cell phone. With the peace and quiet there are many species of birds and animals that pass through the property. The picture postcard views of the river and mountains are great for artists and photographers alike. The Ute Indians used to come here to summer along the Uncompahgre River and believed in its healing properties. Just south of the cabin is the Dallas trailhead for hiking up into the mountains. From Ouray there are many other hiking trails. Be advised that our trails start at around 7,800 ft and many go as high as 14,000 ft. In Ouray, you can rent a jeep or take a jeep tour, go to the hot springs pool, walk around town to see the historic mining homes, or go to the historic mining museum. There are many places to shop and eat. Ten miles north of Ouray is Ridgway, CO, where you can eat and shop, too. Head a little west along Highway 62 and at the Dallas Divide you can see the panoramic view of the magnificent 14,000 ft. Sneffels Range of the San Juan Mountains.

Beautiful and secluded
The cabin was clean and the location is secluded and quiet. Jim met us there and told us if we needed anything to let him know but everything we needed was there. We brought our own food to cook and all the utensils, plates, cups, and silverware were there in the cupboards.
Very nice property in a quiet location
Jim met us on the road to the cabin and led us into the property (it was very secluded and would have been hard to find from just an address). He personally explained to us not only the things we needed to know about the cabin, but also about the very natural area around it (i.e. wildlife possibilites). He also gave us some pointers on restaurants and entertainment in the towns and area nearby. We enjoyed relaxing at the cabin, and would book this it again if we vacation in the Ouray area again. Note that the driveway to this cabin is steep, and is accessible best by a short wheelbase vehicle that is not too low to the ground.
Thank you for staying with us and for the nice review. We hope to see you again.

Want to rough it? Try this one out.
Had to sign a contract that I understood a four wheel drive was required for the driveway and we had to bring our own beach towels. A little late for that information. Then advised we needed to turn off the water to the toilet except when we flushed cause it leaked. Then the next day the dish water poured into the cabinet beneath the sink and onto the floor, so we spent a half hour on hands and knees cleaning up the mess. And the washer, drier and hot tub listed in the VRBO add? Had to go to town to access the public facilities. Double bed, not even a queen. No ice maker. Horrible in and out access driveway. High centered every time, so limited to once per day. And the place is listed for sale, so no interest in having us as return customers.
So sorry you didn't like our place. We are just a mom and pop business with just 1 cabin.
We have never offered a hot tub or a washer and dryer.
I hope your ill wife feels better.
The river you wanted Beach towels for to sit by the river is dangerous since bears are always around drinking along with deer and Mountain Lions.
Very neat, private cabin, well constructed with everything one needs!
We really enjoyed our three days at the Caretaker's Cabin. The location was nice and private. The river provided a soothing melody as we went to sleep every night. We ate breakfast and dinner on the balcony every day. While the highway is nearby, you can't hear the autos because the river drowns them out.
Overall, this was a great experience and great stay. Really appreciated the propane grill that enabled us to cook great evening meals right at the cabin!
Cute, cute, cute!!!
Thank you for your review. We hope you will come see us again.

Very quiet and secluded
We really enjoyed our four days at the caretaker's cabin. It's cozy, quiet and secluded and exactly what my wife and I were looking for. If you want to get away from it all and enjoy some quiet (except for the sound of the river -which is great) nice scenery and seclusion, I highly recommend this place! The owner, Jim, was very helpful and met us to lead us in. It's not the easiest place to find. Perfect for a relaxing get away and close to the town of Ouray.
Thank you for your review. We hope to see you again.
The Perfect Get Away Cabin!
You have the feeling of being deep in the forest in this private setting, yet you are only a short drivie from beautiful Ouray and interesting Ridgeway, Colorado! We spent most days enjoying breakfast and dinner on the front porch, before heading out on day trips. My husband went fishing in the river right out the front door of the cabin!. We took day trips to explore Silverton, Ridgeway and Telluride. You can't spend time here without going to at least one of the many hot spring pools in the area.
Jim was there to greet us when we arrived, and was just a phone call away if we needed anything.
This is the perfect "get away cabin"! We definitely plan to go back!
Thank you for your review. Hope we meet again since we are both Nancy's.
