|Minimum Stay||7 - 119 nights|
Otter Rocks no longer has vacancies for the summer. The Shed (4 people) is available in late September and October.
Ever dream of a house built onto a cliff overlooking the ocean?
Otter Rocks and "The Shed" at Otter Rocks are distinctively designed 'Frank Lloyd Wright' style houses. The houses are built into their surroundings and the granite ledge they are perched on, overlooking the rocky shore of Blue Hill Bay – a truly spectacular spot. This is a property that has all the creature comforts plus the charm of unique Maine summer homes. Enjoy a panoramic view of the bay and watch sunsets from either house. You are guaranteed to see boats, birds, porpoises and, at night, shooting stars. Keep watching and you may spot an eagle, a seal or an otter. Otter Rocks is located on the "quiet side" of Mount Desert Island with easy access to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park.
Both houses have minimum 7 day stays, however, may be waived at the owner's sole discretion. Otter Rocks can be rented independently or in combination with The Shed (adding The Shed to your reservation will increase Otter Rock's pricing by $1,200/ week). The Shed can only be rented independently after September 15th ($1,450/ wk).
Otter Rocks is built on four levels, cascading toward the shoreline. Four cozy bedrooms are furnished with a queen bed, a full bed, and two twin beds; all well removed from the living areas. A pull out couch is also located in the family room for a willing guest. A fully equipped bright and roomy kitchen takes the chore out of meal prep, inspiring the chef with ocean views. With expansive decks on both the north and south side of the house, you can always find a sunspot or a place to sneak away to read a book from the house's lending library. Maximum occupancy is 6 people.
"The Shed", a family reference to the cabin's location on the property where a shed was originally built, is an additional house that is only steps away from Otter Rocks. It provides you a cozy, self sufficient get-away, "in-law" suite or expansion space for more people to join your Mt. Desert vacation! The Shed has two bedrooms with a queen and two twin beds, respectively, a full bath and ample living space with spectacular views. A gas fireplace will keep you toasty warm when there is a chill. An open galley kitchen provides a small refrigerator, microwave and hot plate-cook top and a four seat, eat-in dining table. A gas grill, accessible directly off the kitchen on The Shed's large, western facing deck, opens up your culinary possibilities. Maximum occupancy is 4 people.
The property is very secluded without being isolated. At the end of a dead end road, only you and your other guests will be nearby. The villages of Southwest Harbor, Northeast Harbor, and Bar Harbor, plus Acadia National Park’s main entrances and trails are fifteen to thirty minutes away by car.
Swimming is possible for the intrepid, given the rocky shore and the ocean water, but access into the water is not easy. However, nearby lakes may be more inviting.

Having lived or summered on or around the island for more than 40 years, Mt. Desert has always been considered our home away from home. It is a place that we migrate to each summer (and even an occasional winter) regardless of where ever our family is on the planet. It is an integral part of our family tradition and we would love to share it with you.
The Owner purchased this estate in 1974
Oceanfront. Secluded. Dramatic architecture. Otters (possibly). What more do we need to say?!
Cozy, rustic, and private with all the comforts of home. The seaside location was seen from the huge windows from inside the home, from multiple spacious decks and from your own rocky shore. Acadia destinations are a close drive away as well as great restaurants. Owner was very gracious and accommodating. We loved Otter Rocks!!
This house is even nicer than it looks on-line. The unusual architecture is in harmony with the setting, there are windows everywhere, and the views are wonderful. With no other houses within sight or hearing, Otter Rocks is very peaceful. The home is clean and welcoming, nicely decorated, with all necessary appliances, an extensive library, and even basic supplies. We enjoyed reading on the decks, and seeing the wildlife, especially the small red squirrels that came on the decks to take the nuts we put out for them, and dolphins that came in close to the rocks at the edge of the property on a morning so quiet we could hear them breathing. The owner is friendly and helpful. She answered endless questions (our email string has 33 entries), and her directions made it easy to find the house. Even more important to us, she was flexible about dates and times. Our primary activity was attending our son's graduation, but we also had fun driving to the top of Cadillac Mountain and wandering through the shops in Bar Harbor. We had good (but expensive) dinners at the Looking Glass Restaurant in Bar Harbor and Red Sky in Southwest Harbor, and a fun breakfast at Cafe Your Way in Bar Harbor.
A stones throw from the ocean, OtterRocks provides the perfect location situated close enough to Acadia, Bar Harbor, and the tourist attractions you can enjoy them when you want, but far enough away that you can leave it all behind when you are ready for peace and reflective quiet. The sounds of waves will lull you to sleep and the sounds of the lobster boats will be your alarm clock. The house is exactly as purported on VRBO. It is a simply decorated summer house with all the convenience you need to relax. Wander the coastline for hours and you wont ever see another soul. The house's name isn't the owner's artistic license, we actually saw otters albeit from a distance! For dinner, you need to try Thurston's Lobster Pound, just 10 minutes away in Bernard (Bass Harbor), but bring warm clothes, even in July.
We enjoyed a week in August 2010 at this wonderful, rustic yet very comfortable, clean and well maintained house. Everything was as advertised on the VRBO listing. The setting cannot be equaled--perched above the rocky coast, convenient to things to do yet secluded. Fully furnished--even to a selection of Maine-themed books. We enjoyed meals on the deck. But even when the mosquitoes are bad and you have to eat inside, the dining area is situated so you can enjoy the view. The owner was great to deal with -- both before and after we had rented the house. We forgot to print our directions, so called her after we had passed through Ellsworth on our way to the house. She interrupted whatever she was doing and cheerfully provided specific directions. A minor problem brought the caretaker to the house within minutes of our call. Summary -- we loved this house and we will be back. The review guidelines ask for local recommendations: We ate at the Dry Dock in Southwest Harbor twice and really liked it both times; avoid Fiddler's Green--service was terrible.
I can't imagine a better vacation site. We found that this place has it all. There we were, perched on a cliff over the ocean with absolutely gorgeous views all day and evening (the stars are spectacular), with islands and a rocky coast across Blue Hill Bay, the extended ocean view to the west, phenomenal sunsets, and barely another house in sight (except far across the bay). So it was tempting to stay put, which you easily can in this spot, given multiple decks that allow you to catch the sun or shade at any time of day/evening, rocky cliffs that served as our own living room/lounge, lush green grounds all around that are full of birds and song, multiple living areas for games, late night chats, etc., and a wonderfully furnished living space and kitchen.
But we are very active folks with no intention of just staying put, and we found this a great spot for biking and long walks (especially in Acadia's carriage roads), boating, swimming, shopping, and of course, eating. The house is big but feels cozy (we had 7 people staying and never felt crowded). The owners stocked the house with information about places to eat and play. There are great restaurants nearby but at sufficient distance that you feel you're in a lovely, quaint, rural setting.
Hey, what more could you want, except a masseuse...but the constant song of the waves gives a pretty good massage job on its own. This is a great spot for young and old, active and lazy, sophisticated and simple.
This is THE perfect get away spot! The views are amazing across Blue Hill Bay, the sounds of which will lull you to sleep at night while the drumming of the lobster boats will gently rouse you from your slumber in the morning. Multiple decks allowed us to enjoy either shade or sun and "Cocktail Rock" was the perfect spot to sit, relax, and watch the sun set over the Blue Hills while enjoying a glass of wine. A true gem of the "quiet side", it allowed us to explore the parts of Acadia and the island that weren't so crowded and felt like our little secrets (try Seal Cove, Pretty Marsh, Bass/Bernard Harbor, and Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse to mention a few). If you are a paddler of either kayak or canoe then aim for Seal Cove for a good protected spot with great access to put-in (but be prepared as the water is COLD and the wind can come up around noonish out further in the bay). South West Harbor is just a short drive away and had all the needed amenities as well. Be sure to go to Thurston's Lobster Pound in Bernard for the quintesential, picture perfect seafood dinner right on the waterfront (be sure to wear warmer clothes at cooler times as it is only screened-in and wear your lobster bib!). If you are lucky you might catch a glimps of otters playing off the rocks in front of the house, Mackeral running, Bald Eagles flying by at tree top levels, porpoises, seals, and maybe a fox or two!
Minutes from Acadia National Park, world class hiking and multiple 'swimming holes'. By day, wander the shoreline that's just beyond your front doors, populated by an enormous variety of wildlife . By night, ZERO light pollution provides unbelievable star gazing.
