This charming, completely renovated late 1800’s Maine house is located directly overlooking the fishing harbor of the village of Stonington. The house is surrounded by a gently rolling yard with lovely gardens which leads down to a sandy beach with granite ledges. The magnificent views include ships parading through the town thoroughfare, pine topped nearby islands (including Isle au Haut on a clear day) and observing the comings and goings of the lobster boats. The spacious yard continues in back of the house with plenty of room for croquet, badmitton or simply lounging in a hammock; ample parking is provided off the driveway.
Due to the large tides not only are the views continually changing but the small islands in front of the house can actually be reached on foot when the tide is out.
“The Stronghold” exudes a comfortable and cozy style with a mixture of old and new. Although the house accomodates up to eight people, it is cozy enough for two. The old wood floors, fireplaces, etched glass doors, antiques and collectables have been blended with new furnishings and a modern kitchen and renovated bathrooms. Colors abound both inside and out!
Step out of the second floor master bedroom suite onto a beautiful deck/balcony overlooking a breathless view! Downstairs, an attached one bedroom in-law/guest suite w/ private living room, kitchen and bath add versatility, privacy and room to spread out.
Enjoy your meals in the eat-in kitchen, the formal dining room, the sun-porch, or picnicking in the yard overlooking stunning harbor views.
The location, design and comforts of this beautiful home are too numerous to mention. Bask in the unrivaled views from the decks and yard, swim off the sandy beach, explore the unique shops and restaurants in the villages of Stonington and Deer Isle, or simply relax and take in the sun and ocean breezes; it doesn’t get any better than this! A true, Maine seaside classic!
My grandparents purchased a summer house on Deer Isle in 1918...and our family has been returning to the island ever since. Unfortunately, my grandmother sold their house in the mid-60's, but my interest in having my own home continued and I was able to purchase 'The Stronghold' in 1999. After three years of renovation (inside and out), I'm proud of the final result!
Sallie Strong purchased this house in 1999
This is a magical spot...the location and views are unsurpassed. The village offers restaurants and entertainment and the house is comfortable yet spacious with ever-changing views.
This spot is a haven for relaxation, interspection and exploration, entertaining and fun. The sky meets the water, meets the islands and the harbor and...meets my house. It is all very hard to describe!
Thank you so much for opening your house to us. It is a magical place where you can sit and watch the world go by. The house is decorated so uniquely. I love the book "Maine Memories" and will try to purchase one as a special reminder of days gone by. One week is not enough. Next time we will stay longer like we did two years ago.
Johnny is a wonderful asset - for many reasons" Our memories of this special house and setting will see us through until we come again. Thank you.
This was a fabulous home for our vacation. The location was perfect and the views were unsurpassed. We enjoyed sitting on the master bedroom balcony each morning and each evening, watching the boats. There is outdoor seating all over the house, not just off the master bedroom. There is even a sunroom so you can enjoy the view even if it rains. The house was large enough for our family of 5, including 3 adult children. The additional apartment was cleverly designed so it could either be a completely closed off private apartment, with its own entrance and deck, or it can kept open and act as a bedroom that flows with the rest of the house. We were worried that one of our kids would be isolated, but it worked out well. The house included everything from cooking supplies to towels to games. My husband and I are kayakers, so we were especially excited when the owner let us use her kayaks and canoe.
Stonington was a perfect little town. It was peaceful with just enough vacation-y things to do, mostly within walking distance. We walked to the area restaurants (Fisherman's Friend was our favorite) and to the local shops, and made quite a few trips to 44 North coffee shop, which we loved so much, we are now ordering the coffee online. If you have to drive anywhere, it is always scenic and pleasurable. We drove out to Bar Harbor one day, about an hour drive, and not only was it a great day trip, the drive there and back was beautiful.
There were just a few cons, and these are pretty minor compared to all the pros: First, the owner lived on the premises, which was kind of awkward. Sallie is super sweet and was always very helpful, but it was hard not to feel self-conscious. Neighbors and guests and their children often roamed around the property. The windows were always open (for air) and the yard is small, so we felt pretty exposed at times. The third con is that all the indoor chairs were uncomfortable and the master bedroom bed had springs poking through. Also, both the owner and the neighbor had dogs that ran through the backyard. And although we do like pets, we signed a "no pets on premises" lease, so I didn't expect to see dogs squatting down in the garden. The last con is that there was no cell service inside the house and wi-fi was very weak. These are all very minor things but I thought they were worth mentioning.
I would still strongly recommend the Stronghold for a family vacation. It is the most beautiful house and the most perfect spot on the island.
The best waterfront vacation rental
home in Stonington, Maine is "The Stronghold." We used this home as our central headquarters for our 35th wedding anniversary, family vacation. The owner has gone to great effort to make this home an exceptional beauty and the most memorable resort experience. Standing amongst neighboring, gray siding homes stands this magnificent, recently renovated masterpiece. Located on a private lane on Stonington's waterfront, you are welcomed with an inviting back porch, complete with conversational chairs, windchimes, and croquet for the manicured front or rear yard gaming. The waterfront has a magnificent quarried stone bulkhead and flowering landscaped yard, with two kayaks waiting for you to explore the harbor a nearby islands.
The owner, Sallie Strong, has literally thought of everything. Both a gas grill and charcoal grill are on site waiting for your cooking preference. Typically Maine rentals in this area are austere. However this home has Wi-Fi, multiple TVs with DVDs or cable. The duel kitchens were especially useful for our multi families' food storage, prep and cleanup. The main kitchen even has a trash compactor. There are multiple indoor and outdoor rooms for relaxing, watching the lobster boats in the harbor, and enjoying leisurely or formal meals.
We admired the decorating as every niche had a unique curio, painting, photo or nautical artifact to admire. The bright room colors and comfortable beds were specially inviting.
We have rented four different homes on Deer Isle in recent years. While this home was the most expensive to rent, it was by far the best value. Given the ideal location, the amenities, and the overall experience, I would highly recommend it.
We loved everything about the property! The location is perfect. We had front row seats to the working waterfront. The house is beautiful and had everything we needed. The weather was perfect the entire week. We had family fly in from Arizona and Wisconsin and they loved the waterfront and kayaking in the harbor. The lobster boat races were a bonus! I highly recommend this location if you are interested in a small lobstering community and small town feel.
Loved the home, location and cleanliness. Sallie had the home stocked with everything we needed. We had a wonderful family vacation and will return.
Five friends and I spent a glorious week in late summer at the Stronghold. The house, itself, offered every comfort, convenience, and delight to the eye. We could easily walk all around the town, and we also made enjoyable day trips along scenic and reliable routes. The Opera House offered unique entertainment, restaurants plied us with delectable food, and local galleries and shops, as well as a farmers' and artisans' market, provided opportunities to browse or buy. An adventure on a lobster boat gave us views of the Bay and its nearby islands, along with an informative and personable narrative from the captain. Finally, the warmth of the locals added the icing to the cake.
This was our fifth year renting the Stronghold and it was fabulous again this year. The location is perfect and there is nothing you would want that isn't provided at the house. We love that you can walk to downtown which includes a few shops and restaurants. We love watching the process of lobstering that takes place all around us, and the surprise appearance of a schooner or two in the back yard is really a treat. Hope to stay there again next year.
Deer Isle abounds in unspoiled spectacular scenery with incredible hiking trails active with natural wildlife, marine mammals, birds (Eagles and Osprey), and vistas of small pine covered islands dotting the ocean; it is a destination for ocean sailors as well as kayakers; many talented and creative artists work and live here and the world renowned Haystack School of Art is located here; it an easy, beautiful drive to Camden, Castine or Bar Harbor.
