Space 1,000 sq. ft.
Property type apartment
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Apartment, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4)

This apartment is ideally located in the heart of magnificent colonial Cartagena, which is a very safe area. It's a stone-throw from the 16th century cathedral and also where Sir Francis Drake lived when he captured the city.

Within walking distance: fine restaurants, museums, churches, the beautiful streets of Cartagena, and its fortifications. A bit further out, requiring a taxi ride, the spectacular San Felipe fort and La Popa mountain-top monastery.

Beaches close by.

The apartment itself is well appointed and decorated, ideal for two couples. The building has a lap pool at street level as well as a roof-top sunning and lounging area. It has a doorman at all times.

The daily visit of a cleaning lady is included. She can also be hired to cook lunch.

Nearby travel agencies, or boats on the dock southeast of the apartment, can arrange a boating visit to the bay's fortifications, the Rosario islands, and the Aquarium.

About Jaime Urrutia

Residing in Santiago, Chile, also in Bogotá, Colombia. Have loved Cartagena for a long, long time.

Jaime Urrutia purchased this apartment in 1990

Why Jaime Urrutia chose Centro

Colonial, walled, Cartagena is extraordinary - an intimate and magnificent experience. This building is located on the landmark Plaza de Bolívar, diagonal from the Inquisition Palace Museum, the XVIth Century Cathedral, and the Gold Museum.

What makes this apartment unique

The lanai of the apartment faces the beautiful dome and spires of San Pedro Claver Church. The building is on the central Plaza de Bolivar or Inquisition Square, although the apartment is on the quiet side of the building, not facing the sometimes noicy square. Ideal location for walking tours of this gem of a colonial city. The building has a lap pool and a sundeck.

Charming apartment in a great location

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four spent 5 days in this apartment on the Plaza Bolivar, right in the middle of town. The two bedrooms are both large, one with a full size bed and trundle single underneath, and the other with two twin beds as well as one trundle single. The full bed in the master has a rather firm and thin mattress, which was fine with my wife and I but might not be to the taste of some. The central living/dining area is also quite large, and (like all the rooms) has lovely high ceilings with fans. Two baths, a functional and well-equipped galley kitchen, and a long entry hall including a washing machine closet complete the apartment. Large windows and french doors are found in most rooms, and the main living area opens onto a patio with a hammock, chairs, and views of the local churches and towers. The two bedrooms have air conditioning, but the central areas depend on the good ventilation and ceiling fans for cooling. I liked the decor quite a bit. The bookcases are filled with volumes on history and art, while the walls are covered with an ecletic mix of local paintings. The place feels like the vacation apartment of some south american writer or intellectual (which it may be). The owners are very responsive to email requests, and the local staff (doormen and the caretaker Ayde, who comes daily and keeps everything clean) were all fabulous. The building has a small shaded pool in an inner courtyard which looks nice, but we did not use it. No significant negatives for our family, but others might be bothered by some things. Music from the nearby square can be clearly heard in the evenings when in the central rooms with windows open, and it can feel warm outside the air conditioned bedrooms during the middle of the day. If you want something newly renovated/modern this may may not be to your taste, but we loved it!

Best spot in the Walled City.

  • 5 of 5

This apartment is located in the best possible place within the Walled City. The apartment itself is quite roomy with each bedroom has its own bathroom. The views from the covered patio and roof top sun deck are breath taking. I especially enjoyed waking to the sound of doves, parrots, and yes even the cooing of the pigeons. The nightly breezes that you feel on the patio at night are welcomed after a day of walking and sightseeing. The lady who comes in on a daily basis except for Sunday is an absolute delight, as well as the door staff in the lobby. Many sights and plazas are only a short walk from this apartment. The Spanish Inquisition, The Emerald Museum, The Naval Museum, The Clock Tower, and the many churches are all within walking distance. The owner of this apartment is quick to respond to any and all questions. I couldn't have asked for an easier process. The apartment is the way to go instead of a hotel. It saves on Taxi fares! There are plenty of good restaurants to choose from and not to forget the street vendors who sell a good variety of fruits. They were delicious! Take time to walk the entire wall, it is a good way to see the city. Be sure and wear a hat and sunglasses, but if you forget there are plenty of vendors who will sell you what you need. I enjoyed my experience in Cartagena and hope to return. If and when I do, I will most certainly book this apartment. I couldn't have asked for more. My visit was in March of 2017, the weather was wonderful.

Lovely and authentic

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful time at this apartment. It was very much as represented in the photos. Would definitely consider staying here again. It was a great location in the old city. The apartment is very open with high ceilings and interesting art. The weather in Cartagena reminds me of what is referred to as the "Low Country" in South Carolina of the United States. Very hot and humid. I appreciated that the bedrooms had good air conditioning. One of the best things about staying in this apartment was being able to enjoy the roof top terrace with an amazing view of the ocean and the entire city (both old and new). We went up to the terrace each evening with our snacks and wine. The first evening, we saw a white owl fly overhead. It was magical - just like the city of Cartagena.

Wonderful Stay in Centro Historico

  • 5 of 5

We spent three weeks at this lovely apartment in the heart of historic Cartagena. The apartment has a lot of charm and is filled with interesting books and art. It is well located on the Plaza Bolivar and in the back of the building so there is less noise, though you can hear the folkloric dancers each night. Both bedrooms have air conditioning and the apartment has a lovely little balcony. There is a lap pool on the bottom floor, which is great for cooling off in the afternoons. Everyone in the building was very friendly and helpful.

First visit to Cartagena

  • 5 of 5

This was our first trip to Cartagena and this apartment helped insure that our experience was memorable. We had originally only booked 5 days but because we enjoyed the place so much we stayed another week. The apartment is perfect while visiting Cartagena. Location is as good as it gets, central and secure. The terrace is made for spending the morning and early afternoons, with fresh air and a great view. Beautifully decorated and lots of light, the pictures really don't do justice to how welcoming it is. Books, Music, great staff running the place. This will be my choice for all future visits to Cartagena.

  • 5 of 5

Excellent apartment. Great accommodations. Very comfortable, safe, friendly. Very good location. Support services excellent. Everything you need is provided. Owner is extremely helpful and responsive. We had a great time just hanging out on the patio/lanai. Pool is fine as is top deck veranda. We stayed almost a month and had no problems, only positive experiences. Good value and very well decorated with art work and artifacts. Collection of books and reading materials excellent. Accurately and very well represented in listing.
