The Wild and Wonderful mountains of West Virginia are the perfect vacation getaway for this property. Only two hours drive from Washington D.C., (3 hours Baltimore, 3 1/2 hours Richmond, 5 hours Philadelphia) this private cabin is secluded in the woods and offers you the pristine beauty of the Shenandoah Mountains. Near the George Washington National Forest and Lost River State Park, there are a wide range of recreational activities: swimming, horseback riding, hiking, antiquing, fishing, canoeing, archery, as well as fine dining or simple, country eating. During the winter months, skiing is convenient. Lots to choose from or just relax and enjoy a sweet cabin in the woods.
Adventures Abound: From Washingtonian Magazine May 2006 - : 'The Lost River Valley of West Virginia has been found.' 'Tucked between two mountain ridges, the valley, a couple of hours from Washington, is drawing more weekenders. The lure is rugged woodland scenery, tumbling mountain streams, and outdoor fun - hiking, fishing, biking, canoeing, swimming, rafting, climbing, horseback riding.' You'll have your choice of the Lost River State Park, where the Hidden Trails Stables is located for horseback riding, archery, outdoor pool, tennis and a restaurant. Also nearby is the Trout Pond Recreation Area at the George Washington National Forest, with fishing, a gentle lake with a beach for swimming, lovely light walking or more serious hiking.
Serenity: The moment you enter our cabin retreat, you'll be struck by the scent of fresh pine. The cabin is inlaid from floor to ceiling with fresh pine wood and the sweet, woodsy, smell will be with you throughout your stay. It is an authentic country cabin which has been modernized, by bumping out a bay window and building a sun room, so there's lots of light to be had and includes all of the modern amenities, with A/C. You'll have both the rural mountain feel and all of the conveniences from home. Perfect for a romantic getaway or kids will love our back yard where they can knock around a soccer ball. This is a back to nature locale for a couple or a family with children.
Local Restaurants and Shops: While we are a getaway, there are still local businesses to visit during your time in Lost River. The Guest House at Lost River has fine dining with a 40 seat restaurant and bar operating on weekends throughout the year. Lost River General Store offers crafts, lunch and ice cream for tourists on the shopping prowl. Lost River Grill serves breakfast, lunch and dinner throughout the year, as well as an evening bar with Karaoke on weekends. South End Grocery will offer any of your other household needs.
My husband and I chose this cabin for last minute getaway! Making the reservation was easy as pie and Gordon, the owner, is very kind and responsive. The cabin itself is extremely cute – it looks much better in person than the pictures suggest!! We loved the cabin so much we barely left!! The couch is extremely comfortable and once you sit on it, you don’t want to get up! There is a fireplace in the den which when lit just added to the cabin feel! I appreciated the attention to detail in regards to the cabin’s decorations!! There are board games, puzzles and lots of DVD’s! The cabin has internet and we brought our laptop which we connected to the TV and we were able to stream Netflix with no problem! I was also very happy that there was a charcoal grill on site! We spent a lot of time outside enjoying the fresh air and grilling! My dogs enjoyed exploring the land around the cabin as well! I would without a doubt recommend this cabin to anyone and everyone, and in fact I have already recommended it to friends and co-workers!
I had been back from this cabin for a few weeks now, but it hasn't been off my mind. This cabin offered such a pleasant feeling that is sure to last for a while. I had a great time of relaxation, reading, studying, and just purely being. The cabin is very clean and located in a peaceful and quiet surrounding. The access to the cabin is very easy yet once you are there, it feels worlds away. I have all the good memories of this sweet place that lives up to its name. I would definitely go back soon.
My wife and I just came back from long weekend and spent 4 nights at Cabin Sweet Cabin. With an interior draped in wood you certainly get the feel of being in a lovely rustic cabin. The cabin is located up a gravel road, very quiet and secluded but still close enough to the highway so you can get to where you want to go fairly easy.
A couple tips:
1) If you are planning on cooking it might not hurt to stop at a supermarket before coming to Lost River. We hit all of the convenience stores/gas stations within 20-30min drive of the property, they are only good for the basics. The only meats we could find were hot dogs and pepperoni, not much breakfast foods either so we ended up taking a 45min ride to a supermarket and stocked up
2) Restaurants in town were very good and close (check out the Guest House! super close and delicious!).
3) At time of writing this review the house has a TV, but not hooked up to cable/satellite. So bring movies! The homeowner has provided many excellent movie choices
The reason I couldn't give this property 5 stars after checking in and getting ready for bed, we lifted the comforter to find the sheets containing many long, black hairs. Neither my wife nor I have black hair (or long hair for that matter). It wasn't just a couple hairs, but several dozen scattered along the sheets. There was also a very distinct smell from the sheets. The rest of the cabin was very clean so I'm sure this was just an honest mistake by the cleaning crew. But nevertheless it wasn't the best way to set the "mood" on day 1.
Other than that one hiccup a great time was had. Lost River is certainly a good place to visit to get out of the "city life" for a few days and enjoy a more simple, peaceful life.
This cabin is very cozy and comfortable. It's very clean and has everything you need for a great vacation. The woods and mountains surrounding the cabin are very peaceful and a great place for morning walks with the dog. The hiking trails at Lost River State Park, just down the road, are well marked and provide beautiful vistas of the surrounding mountains and beautiful foliage. This is a great escape in a great area and reserving it was fast and easy.
Cabin Sweet Cabin was a very relaxing place! I went with my mother and two sisters to have a girl getaway and we surely enjoyed ourselves. The mountains and green trees surround the cabin which made us all in awe to witness such beauty!! The cabin is very well kept and very clean. We loved the sunroom in which we relaxed and read books. We took advantage of the outdoor grill and table. There are so many different outdoor activities to participate in. Our favorites were the lake and horseback ridding. I would highly recommend!
This is our second family trip to Cabin Sweet Cabin, and we just love it. My husband and I took our two kids, and it is their favorite place. We spent our days relaxing and swimming at Trout Pond - a wonderful place to swim - and our evenings grilling and making s'mores and then playing board games in the sun room. The cabin is super cozy and has good lighting (especially the sun room) and comfy rooms. There's also a tv and dvd player with a ton of movies, and wireless if you have to check your email. The cabin is fully stocked and well appointed, so whether you want to cook, read, hike, or take lots of naps, you will be good to go! This is a great place to relax and reconnect with your family, and we hope to visit again. Lost River is a beautiful place, and Cabin Sweet Cabin is a great place to experience it. Thank you!
