About Susan Ackoff Ortega

I loves the multicolored Caribbean Sea and the intense greens of the tropical flora. I've been coming to the Mexican Caribbean since I was nineteen and have brought my children here since they were small. I am an artist and a retired art teacher and love the light here. I am an avid diver and feel very much at home on my wonderful beach.

Susan Ackoff Ortega purchased this villa in 2005

Why Susan Ackoff Ortega chose Quintana Roo

I fell in love with Mahahual, Costa Maya because it reminded me of the Mexico I knew many years ago before the over-development of Cancun and its surrounding area. I've always loved the Caribbean Sea and am so pleased that I realized my dream of having a home right on the beach just steps away from its turquoise blue waters. I enjoy the year round warm weather, being near Mayan ruins and being able to go scuba diving often. I choose this location so I could have a large beach and be surrounded by nature.

What makes this villa unique

I fully enjoy the peace and tranquility I find on my special 213 foot beach. My beach house has a wonderful 2nd floor large terrace with access from each bedroom, great for watching the sun rise, sun set or gazing at the stars. The sea awaits me for my early morning swim. I head back to the house for a delicious coffee which I often drink on the expansive patio. I love looking out at the palm trees and the shore beyond, a 100 feet away. Snorkeling in front of the house or scuba diving with one of Mahahual's dive shops are also favorites. I relish reading a great book followed by an afternoon nap in one of the colorful hammocks on the patio. Taking a walk along the beach and observing various land and water birds along with tropical animals is a delight. I even saw a jaguar once.

Secluded paradise!

  • 5 of 5

Our recent stay at Yum Botic was amazing! Upon arrival we were greeted by Lalo and Dani, the caretakers who gave us a complete run down on the property (thank you to the translation apps as our Spanish is virtually nonexistent!). We quickly got settled in and enjoyed the first evening enjoying the amazing views and listening to the ocean. The peace and tranquility were just what we needed and the property's beachfront is pristine (great job Lalo!). The house was impeccably kept and very clean and had all the basic necessities such as spices, paper towels etc. We stocked up in Tulum so were well prepared with all the foods we needed such as coffee, condiments and our main food items. Highly recommend stocking up ahead of time as if this is your first time gathering supplies can be a little challenging in the local mini-supers where you will get all your needs.

Lalo and Dani were great, pulling out the kayaks and setting up the hammocks for us every morning, not to mention the daily maintenance on the beach cleaning up the seagrass that came in overnight to ensure easy access to the water. They even assisted us with getting a few supplies such as charcoal for the grill (which we forgot in our gathering) and assisted with any issues that we encountered, such as locking ourselves out as the front patio door key was a little challenging to operate due to the inevitable corrosion from the sea air.

We of course ventured into town, the first time on cruise ship day, which definitely increases the population of Mahahual! For future visits to town we avoided "tourist" times and found the town quiet and charming. Our favourite foods came from the "Nam Nam" just a few steps off the beach. We highly recommend their chimichangas, but everything we tried there was excellent. The Krazy Lobster was also a good eating experience, and is right on the beach. I had the Krazy Lobster dish which although a little pricey comparatively speaking, was excellent! We also tried some barbecue chicken from the little shop just across from the soccer field, which again was very good. Functioning ATMs can be a challenge, but we found that the hotel on the way to the port was the most reliable and the Mini Super there also had a wider variety of items, the Bodega also in this area has the largest selection for supplies.

Overall I would give this stay a 4.5 rating (only because there is always room for improvement), and would highly recommend it to anyone!

Secluded, beautiful home

  • 5 of 5

Overall we really loved this house and how secluded it was from the tourists of Mexico. Others have commented a lot on how beautiful the beach and house are and we all felt the same way. The house is probably most comfortable with 6 or less (we were 5). It is a beautifully designed building with large open bedrooms and great outdoor spaces. The palapa, hammocks and upstairs deck were our favorite hangout spots. The caretaker, Avila, that lives on the property was sweet and friendly (speaking spanish was a must) and even brought us coconuts to sip on the beach. Susan was very thoughtful and hooked us up with local organic eggs (from KM 5 farm stand discussed in the rental packet). She also also gave good recommendations on where to buy food, which sites to visit and roughly how long it takes to get places which proved useful. Because of the reef, the ocean had almost no chop, was extremely shallow out to 100 ft and would be safe for swimmers of any age. This also means that there was a lot of seaweed that naturally washes up and the water can be murkier in some spots. We had a little problem with the solar batteries but the caretakers and Susan handled the problem so we were never really without power. Mahahual is a cute town with a board walk and is really only busy when the cruise boats are in town. This location is perfect if you want to get out of tourist locations but be prepared for longer drives to site-seeing destinations. We wanted a place to relax for the week (ex: one of us was studying for the bar) and this quiet location was perfect for the seclusion we wanted.

A Unique Experience

  • 5 of 5

A vacation at Yum Villa is a completely unique experience, combining raw beauty, breathtaking vistas and a taste of nature with just enough civilization. You are surrounded by magnificent beauty and yet very comfortable with just enough modern conveniences.

The house with all its conveniences is airy and open, but gives you a sense of protection. Takes a bit of time to get to but so rewarding when you get there that it is well worth the trip. If you love being immersed in nature while still being comfortable this is a perfect place.
